Book Contraceptive Method Switching Over Women s Reproductive Careers

Download or read book Contraceptive Method Switching Over Women s Reproductive Careers written by David Reboussin and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1950s, the fertility rate has fallen in Peninsular Malaysia, owing in part to the rising percentage of couples who practice contraception and to the increasing effectiveness of the methods they use. This report examines individual women's histories of contraceptive method use, using data from the Malaysian Family Life Survey, looking especially at the types of contraceptive changes they make over their reproductive careers. The vast majority of new acceptors of modern methods had not used any method of contraception previously. Hence, the trend toward increasingly effective contraception was not mainly due to individual women substituting modern for traditional contraception, but rather to younger cohorts of women accepting modern, effective methods, primarily the pill. If the results for Peninsular Malaysia in the period between World War II and 1975 characterize other countries, they have important policy and program implications, including: family planning programs appear to induce nonusers to begin practicing contraception, and some users of less effective methods to switch to more effective ones; the family planning program in Malaysia may have increased the incidence of temporary contraception use; increases in education should improve patterns of contraceptive practice; and expansion of the number of methods available to couples should increase contraceptive prevalence.

Book Demographic and Socioeconomic Changes in Sabah

Download or read book Demographic and Socioeconomic Changes in Sabah written by Tey Nai Ping and published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Press. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population and development are inextricably interrelated. Population size and structure are crucial factors affecting opportunities, pressures, and constraints of society. The high fertility and rapid population growth in low-resource countries have hampered socio-economic development. However, as fertility began to fall rapidly since the middle of the 20th century, many post-demographic-transition countries are undergoing rapid population ageing and encountering labour shortages Sabah is the second-most populous state in Malaysia, with about 4 million population in 2020. It has registered the second-highest population growth rate over the past four decades, brought about by the influx of migrant workers due to the severe labour shortage. The number of non-citizens grew from 420 thousand in 1990 to 1.094 million in 2020. Non-citizens made up close to 30% of the state population during 2013 – 2018, up from around 26% in 2009 – 2010. However, the negative growth of the non-citizens in Sabah during 2018 – 2020 has resulted in zero growth of the state population. This book is a sequel to the series on “Revisiting Population- Development Nexus: The Past in Its Future, 2016”, and “Demographic Transition and Socio-economic Development in Malaysia, 2020”by the Universiti Malaysia Press. Given Sabah’s unique socio-demographic situation, this book will provide a comprehensive analysis of the demographic situation, emphasizing the young generation and the changing roles and status of women in Sabah. The book consists of 14 chapters, covering population situation analysis at the state and district levels; functional population projection; gender differentials in education, employment, and income; internal and international migration; marriage; fertility and fertility preferences; family planning; family and gender roles; youth in development; adolescent sexual and reproductive health; women and youth in the hotel industry; and growth of the non-citizen population. Each chapter examines gender differentials and provides a comparative analysis with Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. The book will serve as a useful reference for planners and administrators from the public and private sectors, researchers, and students.

Book The Second Malaysian Family Life Survey

Download or read book The Second Malaysian Family Life Survey written by John Haaga and published by RAND Corporation. This book was released on 1993 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document discusses the purpose, design, fieldwork, and response rates for the Second Malaysian Family Life Survey (MFLS-2), carried out in Peninsular Malaysia in 1988-1989. MFLS-2 was, in part, a follow-up to the original Malaysian Family Life Survey, fielded in 1976-1977, reinterviewing original respondents and their adult children, plus interviewing a new group of women age 15-49 in 1988. Both surveys produced household-level retrospective and current data from women and their husbands, covering such topics as fertility, nuptiality, migration, mortality, employment, household composition, transfers, and income as well as social, economic, and community-level factors affecting family decisionmaking. MFLS-2 added a sample of older Malaysians to support research on their living standards, health, and intergenerational transfers. Besides MFLS-2 users, this document should interest those planning household surveys in Malaysia or elsewhere, especially those attempting to reinterview a panel of respondents to an earlier survey.
