Download or read book Outcome Analysis of the Botswana Government Food Rations on the Nutritional Status of HIV Infected Children Under Five Years of Age in Mahalapye and Shoshong written by Bakelana Didi Mampasi and published by Grin Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Pediatrics, Stellenbosch Universitiy, course: HIV AND AIDS MANAGEMENT, language: English, abstract: Malnutrition might be the result of complex and interconnected factors, but the role poverty and HIV and AIDS epidemic played in underprivileged settings were determinant in the prevalence of a situation that accounted alone for more than one-third of infant mortality in the developing world. As a vulnerable group, the necessity of a balanced nutrition for children below five years of age to ensure growth and strengthen a developing immune system is paramount. The research study assessed the outcome of the Botswana government food rations intervention through the analysis of the anthropometric parameters of 54 candidates in two constituencies of the central district (MAHALAPYE and SHOSHONG). Through a descriptive quantitative research design, the research study retrospectively reviewed anthropometric parameters of 54 HIV infected children below five years of age for their first year of attendance in respective child welfare clinics of the two constituencies. A customised data collection tool was designed for the purpose and aimed at recording the weights for each visit, the nutritional classifications per visit, the mid-upper-arm classifications, the default to child welfare clinics and the food packages study participants received per visit. Each study site visited availed the Nutritional Surveillance logbooks and the birth registers from 2010 to date. Only data from their first year under the food programme constituted the interest of the study. However, it resulted from the analysis a lower malnutrition rate of study participants (13%) in comparison to the latest national prevalence. A significant annual default rate of 33% was noted with regard to children attendance to child welfare clinics. The food programme did not perform according to expectations in reference to a reduced coverage rate of food rat

Every two pre-school children are malnourished in Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh has achieved Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 3 in the past years and MDG-4 is on track. Consequently, the rate of child malnutrition has reduced somewhat due to the improvement of both health care practice and policy system in Bangladesh in the period between in 1999 (56%) and in 2014 (43~36.8%). Aim The aim of the review study is to find out the prevalence and determinants of child malnutrition in Bangladesh. In addition, the review study will also help future researcher and health policy maker to modify existing nutrition policy through the various nutritional intervention programs in the community and school level to improve the nutritional status of children in Bangladesh. Methods The review study design conducted through the step-by-step systematic review protocol. The author searched relevant primary studies in numerous databases using Boolean operator in the period of February 2015 to July 2015. Eight primary studies met the inclusion criteria after using the screening strategy. In addition, data was collected from the selected eight primary studies and extracted onto the standard data extraction template. Afterwards, the EPHPP tool was used to appraise an individual studies to measure their quality grade. Finally, narrative synthesis was used to analyse data, while meta-analysis was not suitable. Results The review study included total eight primary studies and majority of the articles were cross-sectional studies and conducted in both school and community level. Where, six studies described both prevalence and determinants of child malnutrition in Bangladesh, while rest two studies simply identified the risk factors of child malnutrition. In addition, two prevalence studies reported that about 43% children were malnourished, while other prevalence studies reported that maximum 25% and 10% children were stunted and wasted respectively. Conclusion The review study concluded that about 43% malnourished, 39.5% stunted, and 14% wasting children living in Bangladesh. In addition, the review study also summarised that poverty, lack of exclusive breastfeeding, frequency of complementary feeding, food in-security, access to health care, parental education, occupation of parents, and presence of various infectious diseases are significantly associated with child malnutrition

Book Explaining Child Malnutrition in Developing Countries

Download or read book Explaining Child Malnutrition in Developing Countries written by Lisa C. Smith and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One in three preschool children in developing countries is undernourished. Consequently, they are likely to have impaired immune systems, poor cognitive development, low productivity as adults, and susceptibility to diet-related chronic diseases such as hypertension and coronary heart disease later in life. Undernourished female preschoolers are likely to grow into undernourished young women who are more likely to give birth to babies who are undernourished even before they are born, thus perpetuating the intergenerational transmission of deprivation. This report sheds light on some of the main causes of child malnutrition, projects how many children are likely to be malnourished in the year 2020 given current trends, and identifies priority actions for reducing malnutrition most quickly in the coming decades.

Book Determinants of children s nutritional status in Malawi

Download or read book Determinants of children s nutritional status in Malawi written by Chilora, Lemekezani K. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malnutrition reduction efforts can be targeted based on the characteristics that affect children’s nutritional status. Using data from a nationally representative survey, we model the determinants of young children’s nutritional status in Malawi as measured by height-for-age and weight-for-height z-scores. We identify several determinants of children’s nutritional status including their gender (boys are more malnourished than girls), their mother’s education, the food security and location of their household (rural children are more acutely but not chronically malnourished than urban children) and access to clean water.

Book Household Demography and Household Modeling

Download or read book Household Demography and Household Modeling written by Evert van Imhoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992, a summer course 'Demographic Perspectives on Living Arrangements' as well as a one-day workshop 'Recent Issues in Household Modelling' were held in Wassenaar, The Netherlands. This volume is based on the lectures delivered during the summer course, as well as on the presentations made in the workshop. As such, the present volume combines the two elements of transfer of knowledge, on the one hand, and updating the state-of-the-art in the field of household demography, especially in household modelling, on the other hand. In organizing the contents and structure of this volume, we have aimed at creating a book that covers the field of household demography and household modelling in a certain logical and comprehensive way. The purpose of this book is to offer a comprehensive treatment of recent developments in various aspects of the growing field of household demography. Since these recent developments have particularly occurred in household analysis and modelling, these topics will receive special emphasis. The book was written for demographers, social scientists, and planners who are involved in the study and projection of popUlation in general, and of households in particular.

Book What are the correlates of childhood undernutrition An analysis of DHS data from Africa South of the Sahara

Download or read book What are the correlates of childhood undernutrition An analysis of DHS data from Africa South of the Sahara written by Haile, Beliyou and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite progresses made over the last several decades, the prevalence of child malnutrition re-mains alarmingly high. About 149 million children under the age of five years old were stunted (too short for their age) in 2018, of which 55% and 39% lived in Asia and Africa, respectively. Malnourished children, especially stunted ones, may never achieve their full cognitive and non-cognitive potential with implications for their educational and labor market performance among other things. Malnutrition results from several interlinked factors operating at child, parental, household, and landscape level such as inadequate maternal nutrition before and during pregnancy and at the time of lactation, suboptimal breastfeeding practices, lack of nutritious complementary foods, and unhealthy living environments. This study analyzes the correlates of child undernutrition in rural Africa South of the Sahara (SSA) – a region with the least progress in tackling undernutrition.

Book Determinants of Child Malnutrition in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Download or read book Determinants of Child Malnutrition in the Democratic Republic of the Congo written by Clement B. Pfingu and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an empirical study which aims to find the socio-economic factors that impact on nutritional status of Congolese children under five and propose suitable policies. The econometric model used is based on the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) conceptual framework of immediate, underlying and basic determinants; and the data are from the 2007 DRC Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). Using Ordinary Least Square method we find that poverty is a major cause of child malnutrition. Household wealth and mother related variable like education, occupation and marital status are very important explaining child malnutrition in the DRC. We also find that location variables are very significant. Children in rural areas are more likely to be malnourished than those in urban areas because of inadequate health environment. We then propose that policy should include reforms in women empowerment and a particular attention to rural areas.
