Book Detection of Hybrid and Quiet Vehicles by Blind and Visually Impaired Pedestrians

Download or read book Detection of Hybrid and Quiet Vehicles by Blind and Visually Impaired Pedestrians written by Jay M. Pliskow and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increased popularity of hybrid electric vehicles has created a growing concern for the safety of blind and visually impaired pedestrians. Accident data published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration demonstrates a higher incident rate involving hybrid electric vehicles compared to internal combustion engine vehicles during slow speed (15 kph or less) movement. The lower sound output of hybrid electric vehicles, compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, has been reported as the reason for the high incident rates. Previous studies have focused on the overall sound pressure level of vehicles related to the ability of blind pedestrians to safely cross streets. Under more controlled conditions and lower ambient sound pressure levels than was achievable in previous research measurements were made comparing the detections of hybrid electric vehicles, internal combustion engine vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles with added sounds. Vehicle detection tasks confirmed that when moving at slow speeds, a hybrid electric vehicle is detected, by blind pedestrians, at a closer distance and smaller safety margin when compared to traditional internal combustion vehicles. Adding additional sound to a hybrid electric vehicle resulted in detections made at a greater distance.

Book Quieter Cars and the Safety of Blind Pedestrians

Download or read book Quieter Cars and the Safety of Blind Pedestrians written by Lisandra Garay-Vega and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recognizes that quieter cars such as hybrid-electric vehicles in low-speed operation using their electric motors, may introduce a safety issue for pedestrians who are blind. This study documents the overall sound levels and general spectral content for a selection of hybrid-electric and internal combustion vehicles in different operating conditions, evaluates vehicle detectability for two ambient sound levels, and considers countermeasure concepts that are categorized as vehicle-based, infrastructure-based, and systems requiring vehicle-pedestrian communications. Overall sound levels for the hybrid-electric vehicles tested are lower at low speeds than for the internal combustion engine vehicles tested. There were significant differences in human subjects' response time depending on whether electric or internal combustion propulsion was used at both the lower and higher levels of ambient sound. Candidate countermeasures are discussed in terms of types of information provided (direction, vehicle speed, and rate of speed change, etc.); useful range of detection of vehicles by pedestrians, warning time, user acceptability, and barriers to implementation. This study provides baseline data on the acoustic characteristics and auditory detectability of vehicles; however, the results cannot be generalized to more complex environments, as for example when multiple target vehicles are present.

Book Research and Design of External Sound Effects for Quiet Vehicles

Download or read book Research and Design of External Sound Effects for Quiet Vehicles written by Wei Sun and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the continuous development of social economy and the improvement of computer science, communication engineering and electronic engineering, automo-biles are also gradually transforming from mechanical products driven by internal combustion engines to intelligent products driven by electricity. The electrification and intelligence of automobiles have brought new problems to society: on the one hand, electrically driven vehicles have lower operating noise, which makes pedestri-ans’ perception of vehicles weakened; on the other hand, with the deepening of intel-ligence, the control of vehicles will gradually be yielded from drivers to vehicles, which will largely cause the lack of human-vehicle trust. If these two problems are not solved, they will largely affect the efficiency of future road traffic and even bring potential danger. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a vehicle external sound effect as the external interaction interface of future vehicles to improve human-vehicle per-ception and enhance human-vehicle mutual trust. This paper takes the external sound design of quiet vehicles as the starting point, and divides the external sound design of vehicles into two aspects: quality design and functional design through literature research and combing of sound design related theories and methods. In the research of quality sense design, the paper explores the sound quality categories suitable for quiet vehicles based on human perception of sound quality, and realizes the decomposition of quality sense design elements through psychoacoustic experiments, and constructs the relevant design models, which provides theoretical guidance for the design of quality sense of exterior sound effects of quiet vehicles. In the functional design research, this paper conducted an in-depth investigation and study of human-vehicle conflict based on China’s road en-vironment and traffic participants, extracted a total of four categories and six types of human-vehicle interaction needs, and accordingly designed, optimized and verified the interaction information, and explored the design strategy of functional sound ef-fects.

Book Sustainable Road Infrastructure Technologies and Assessments

Download or read book Sustainable Road Infrastructure Technologies and Assessments written by Di Wang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of sustainable road infrastructures has become an issue of concern to the international community. Road infrastructures require a large amount of non-renewable resources during the construction phase while containing abundant renewable energy resources (e.g. vehicle mechanical energy, internal thermal energy, and surface solar energy) during the operational phase. Therefore, reducing the dependence of road infrastructures on non-renewable resources, upgrading the construction and maintenance levels, improving the recycling level of infrastructure materials, and efficiently harvesting and utilizing clean energy from sustainable road infrastructures are of great significance in alleviating energy problems and promoting sustainable social development.

Download or read book Energy and Environment written by Michel André and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport systems are facing an impossible dilemma: satisfy an increasing demand for mobility of people and goods, while decreasing their fossil-energy requirements and preserving the environment. Additionally, transport has an opportunity to evolve in a changing world, with new services, technologies but also new requirements (fast delivery, reliability, improved accessibility). In this book, recent research works are reported around the triptych: "transport, energy and environment", which demonstrates that vehicle technologies and fuels can still improve, but it is necessary to prepare their implementation (e.g. electro-mobility), to think of new services, and to involve all actors, particularly enterprises, who will be the drivers of innovation. Mitigation strategies are studied to promote innovative, multimodal and clean transports and services. Research progress is reported on air pollution, vibrations and noise, their mitigation and assessment methodologies.
