Book Detection and Assessment of Seismic Structural Damage

Download or read book Detection and Assessment of Seismic Structural Damage written by Edmondo DiPasquale and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The problem of earthquake damage assessment is defined. The role of the analysis of strong motion records in damage assessment codes based on expert system is pointed out. A literature survey on damage assessment and structural system identification is presented. A program for the identification of linear structures, based on strong motion records, has been written out and implemented by the authors. The theoretical and computational aspects of the identification algorithm are discussed. Strong motion records from six buildings that experienced different levels of damage during the San Fernando earthquake (1971) are analyzed. The analysis of strong motion records of buildings that have been damaged during the San Fernando earthquake shows a good agreement between the numerical values of the damage indices and the levels of damage observed in the actual structures. If this result is confirmed by further analysis of both strong motion records from actual structures and small scale experiments, these damage indices can be used as a measure of structural damage. Areas of future research are outlined"--Abstract.

Book Identification of the serviceability limit state and detection of seismic structural damage

Download or read book Identification of the serviceability limit state and detection of seismic structural damage written by Edmondo DiPasquale and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Damage analysis models based on equivalent modal parameters are used to identify the serviceability limit state for structures subjected to earthquake loads. A model for the analysis of seismic structural damage consists of a finite number of numerical indicators (damage indices) and of a procedure for their computation. A structure exhibits a nonlinear behavior when it experiences an earthquake. Nonetheless, an equivalent linear structure can be defined. Damage indices can be defined from the vibrational parameters of the equivalent linear structure considered. In the first place, it is shown that the problem of identification of the serviceability limit state is equivalent to the problem of detection of seismic structural damage. A limit state can be defined as a surface in the space of the damage indices relative to the model considered. Experiments on small-scale models are analyzed to obtain an analytical definition of the serviceability limit state. Since many uncertainties are present in any damage analysis problem, a probabilistic definition is obtained, in terms of the probability that the structure considered is damaged after the seismic event. Finally, records from large-scale models and full-scale structures are analyzed. The model proposed performs very well in detecting seismic structural damage."--Abstract

Book Advances in Earthquake Engineering for Urban Risk Reduction

Download or read book Advances in Earthquake Engineering for Urban Risk Reduction written by S. Tanvir Wasti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquakes affecting urban areas can lead to catastrophic situations and hazard mitigation requires preparatory measures at all levels. Structural assessment is the diagnosis of the seismic health of buildings. Assessment is the prelude to decisions about rehabilitation or even demolition. The scale of the problem in dense urban settings brings about a need for macro seismic appraisal procedures because large numbers of existing buildings do not conform to the increased requirements of new earthquake codes and specifications or have other deficiencies. It is the vulnerable buildings - liable to cause damage and loss of life - that need immediate attention and urgent appraisal in order to decide if structural rehabilitation and upgrading are feasible. Current economic, efficient and occupant-friendly rehabilitation techniques vary widely and include the application either of precast concrete panels or layers, strips and patches of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) in strategic locations. The papers in this book, many by renowned authorities in earthquake engineering, chart new and vital directions of research and application in the assessment and rehabilitation of buildings in seismic regions. While several papers discuss the probabilistic prediction and quantification of structural damage, others present approaches related with the in-situ and occupant friendly upgrading of buildings and propose both economical and practical techniques to address the problem.

Book Seismic Vulnerability Index Assessment Framework of RC Structures

Download or read book Seismic Vulnerability Index Assessment Framework of RC Structures written by Moustafa Moufid Kassem and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a significant step toward a new contribution in the process of developing the seismic vulnerability index. This is accomplished by releasing or reducing the role of the rapid visual screening that is created by the opinions and decisions of experts, which depend on observations made while investigating the vulnerability damages caused by earthquakes. Alternatively, the computational analytical technique is preferable since it can be effective in determining the seismic vulnerability index before the occurrence of an earthquake by modeling the most affected influencing parameters that regulate the building performance. In addition, the seismic vulnerability index is supported by the vulnerability curves, which describe the probability of damages and are used to estimate the economic damage grade for each building which is the topic of inquiry. In the end, this helps to establish a clear vision and sort of recommendations for engineers and specialists to follow in order to take into consideration certain indices and factors before designing any specific structure. Because of this, the simplified work is utilized to manage and put into action measures that will protect against the effects of seismic events before an earthquake really occurs. In addition to this benefit, the work that has been done is of significant assistance to the authorities that are accountable for the restoration of the preexisting buildings and the cultural heritages.
