Download or read book The Strategy of Letters written by Mette Hjort and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although literary theories describe a world of strategies--textual, discursive, interpretive, and political--what is missing is the strategist. Poststructuralists try to explain agency as the effect of large-scale systems or formations; as a result, intuitions about individual action and responsibility are expressed in terms of impersonal strategies. Mette Hjort's book responds to this situation by proposing an alternative account of strategic action, one that brings the strategist back into the picture. Hjort analyzes influential statements made by Derrida, Foucault, and others to show how proposed conceptions of strategy are contradictory, underdeveloped, and at odds with the actual use of the term. Why, then, has the term acquired such rhetorical force? Since "strategy" evokes conflict, Hjort suggests, its very use calls into question various pieties of idealism and humanism, and emphasizes a desired break between modernism and postmodernism. It follows that a theory of strategy must explore some of the psychological implications of conflict, and Hjort pursues these implications through traditions as diverse as game theory, discourse ethics, and the philosophy of war. Unstable frames, self deception, promiscuous pragmatism, and social emotion are some of the phenomena she explores as she develops her account of strategic action in the highly competitive domain of letters. In her reflection on strategy, Hjort draws on such literary examples as Troilus and Cressida, Tartuffe, the autobiographical writings of Holberg, and early modern French and English treatises on theater. For its well-informed and incisive arguments and literary historical case studies, this book will be invaluable to literary theorists and will appeal to readers interested in drama, philosophy and literature, aesthetics, and theories of agency and rationality.

Book Distributed Energy Resources Management

Download or read book Distributed Energy Resources Management written by Pedro Faria and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, the impact of distributed energy resources in the operation of power and energy systems is unquestionable at the distribution level, but also at the whole power system management level. Increased flexibility is required to accommodate intermittent distributed generation and electric vehicle charging. Demand response has already been proven to have a great potential to contribute to an increased system efficiency while bringing additional benefits, especially to the consumers. Distributed storage is also promising, e.g., when jointly used with the currently increasing use of photovoltaic panels. This book addresses the management of distributed energy resources. The focus includes methods and techniques to achieve an optimized operation, to aggregate the resources, namely, by virtual power players, and to remunerate them. The integration of distributed resources in electricity markets is also addressed as a main drive for their efficient use.

Book Grammaticalization

Download or read book Grammaticalization written by Katerina Stathi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers on grammaticalization from a broad perspective. Some of the papers focus on basic concepts in grammaticalization research such as the concept of 'grammar' as the endpoint of grammaticalization processes, erosion, (uni)directionality, the relation between grammaticalization and constructions, subjectification, and the relation between grammaticalization and analogy. Other papers shed a critical light on grammaticalization as an explanatory parameter in language change. New case studies of micro-processes of grammaticalization complete the selection. The empirical evidence for (and against) grammaticalization comes from diverse domains: subject control, clitics, reciprocal markers, pronouns and agreement markers, gender markers, auxiliaries, aspectual categories, intensifying adjectives and determiners, and pragmatic markers. The languages covered include English and its varieties, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, French, Slavonic languages, and Turkish. The book will be valuable to scholars working on grammaticalization and language change as well as to those interested in individual languages.

Book Recent Trends in Algebraic Development Techniques

Download or read book Recent Trends in Algebraic Development Techniques written by Jose L. Fiadeiro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European conference situationin the general area of software science has longbeen considered unsatisfactory. A fairlylarge number of small and medi- sized conferences and workshops take place on an irregular basis, competing for high-quality contributions and for enough attendees to make them ?nancially viable. Discussions aiming at a consolidation have been underway since at least 1992, with concrete planning beginning in summer 1994 and culminating in a public meeting at TAPSOFT’95 in Aarhus. On the basis of a broad consensus, it was decided to establish a single annual federated spring conference in the slot that was then occupied by TAPSOFT and CAAP/ESOP/CC, comprising a number of existing and new conferences and covering a spectrum from theory to practice. ETAPS’98, the ?rst instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, is taking place this year in Lisbon. It comprises ?ve conferences (FoSSaCS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), four workshops (ACoS, VISUAL, WADT, CMCS), seven invited lectures, and nine tutorials.

And engineering management refers to the management of important and complex new products, equipment and devices in the process of development, manufacturing and production, and also includes the study and management of technological innovation, technological transformation, transformation, transformation, layout and strategy of industrial engineering technology development. The development or breakthrough of management theory is accompanied by the development and progress of science and technology, and the level of science and technology and the level of management theory in each historical period are mutually adaptive, and it can be said that the progress of science and technology plays an important role in promoting the development of management. At the same time, the rapid development and progress of science and technology give a strong injection to the development of engineering, and provide the possibility for engineering construction can use new technology, new equipment, new technology and new materials. Modern management is an important development direction of management science nowadays. And the use of modern management in engineering has an important role in saving social costs, ensuring project quality, and improving safety awareness and behavior. ICMSEM 2023 will focus on modern management, discuss about the benefits that modernization brings to engineering. ICMSEM 2023 aims to: Develop and advance management science through the study and application of certain issues. Open up new perspectives in the sharing of speakers and inspire the audience to new ways of managing in engineering. Create a forum for sharing, research and exchange at the international level, so that the participants can be informed of the latest research directions, results and contents of management science, which will inspire them to new ideas for research and practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategies and Tactics in Organic Synthesis presents the chronological development of ideas and experimentation in organic synthesis. This book is organized into 13 chapters that explore the synthetic pathways of various organic compounds. The first four chapters describe the variations in the synthesis of superphane, gibberellic acid, prostaglandin, and alkaloids. The following chapters cover the organic synthesis and biosynthesis of tylonolide, endiandric acids A-G, dodecahedrane, fomannosin, and illudol. A chapter focuses on the evolution of the total synthesis of jatrophone, an architecturally interesting macrocyclic diterpene extracted from Jatropha gossypiifolia. Another chapter discusses the heuristic principle for the stereorationale design of alkaloid syntheses. The remaining chapters discuss the approach to the total synthesis of steroids, streptonigrin, methynolide, and Prelog-Djerassi lactonic acid. Organic chemists, teachers, and students will find this book of great value.
