Book excerpt: We are intuitively interested in the history and future of human civilization. Most people sense that the distant future will not be determined by fantastical circumstances sometimes depicted in contemporary Science Fiction, but rather by decisions made by us and our descendants. Destiny's Obligation is a realistic tale of intense drama on Earth and in Space, set in the 29th century, when typical human fallibility and selfish territorial interests have destroyed civilization in most places. The principals are part of a group of space travelers who return to Earth after a 600-year voyage to a nearby star system. What these descendants of the original explorers find is as much a surprise to them as it will be to the reader. They cannot leave and must first deal with the aggressive inhabitants of a large earth-satellite. They visit Earth eventually and play a significant role in defeating the feuds that are threatening the survival of human society everywhere.

Book excerpt: Justin Vovk's In Destiny's Hands is the heartbreaking story of five children of Austria's iconic empress, Maria Theresa, who watched as their royal worlds were ripped apart by tragedy and epic misfortunes. These are the stories of Joseph, whose disastrous reign forced Austria to the brink of civil war; Amalia, the brazen and scandalous duchess who married a boy-prince and died exiled and forgotten; Leopold, Maria Theresa's unassuming second son, who was the envy of Europe until his tumultuous reign was cut tragically short; Maria Carolina, the very Austrian queen of Naples, who ended her days fighting Napoleon with her dying breath; and Marie Antoinette, the legendary teenage bride, who was hated and reviled as Queen of France and met her ultimate fate on the guillotine, a testimony to her mother's vain ambition. Painstakingly researched and masterfully crafted, In Destiny's Hands brings to vivid life the world of eighteenth century like never before. "Readers will find many fascinating details in Vovk's In Destiny's Hands. Vovk has shed... light on these individuals and provided a much needed new work on Maria Theresa's progeny." -Julia P. Gelardi, author of the critically acclaimed Born to Rule: Five Reigning Consorts, Granddaughters of Queen Victoria and In Triumph's Wake: Royal Mothers, Tragic Daughters, and the Price They Paid For Glory "Be prepared for heart break, smiles, and most of all, a roller coaster of enlightenment... you will not be able to it down." -David Antunes, M.A., author of Napoleon's Way: How One Little Man Changed the World

Book Manifest Destiny s Underworld

Download or read book Manifest Destiny s Underworld written by Robert E. May and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study sheds new light on antebellum America's notorious "filibusters--the freebooters and adventurers who organized or participated in armed invasions of nations with whom the United States was formally at peace. Offering the first full-scale analysis of the filibustering movement, Robert May relates the often-tragic stories of illegal expeditions into Cuba, Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and other Latin American countries and details surprising numbers of aborted plots, as well. May investigates why thousands of men joined filibustering expeditions, how they were financed, and why the U.S. government had little success in curtailing them. Surveying antebellum popular media, he shows how the filibustering phenomenon infiltrated the American psyche in newspapers, theater, music, advertising, and literature. Condemned abroad as pirates, frequently in language strikingly similar to modern American denunciations of foreign terrorists, the filibusters were often celebrated at home as heroes who epitomized the spirit of Manifest Destiny. May concludes by exploring the national consequences of filibustering, arguing that the practice inflicted lasting damage on U.S. relations with foreign countries and contributed to the North-South division over slavery that culminated in the Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noting down quotations that I liked has been a habit of mine since my university days. I kept writing whenever some quotation attracted my attention. During this long period, I also wrote some and later shortlisted what appealed most. Thus, this exercise continued at a slow pace as part of my hobby for leisure time. After retirement from service in the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Govt. of India, I compiled them and had a relook. Some more quotations of lesser liking were screened out. These were then clubbed into relevant headings and sub-headings for quick searches. A desire to group all of these together prompted me to get it published. Though the major part covers quotations in English, a small part collected from Hindi literature is also put under the same cover. Since it was a long period of leisure exercise, there might be some quotations where the name of the author is not shown. This might be due to the fact that the source from where I collected such references that might have not been there. I have also written quotations and notes. Profound quotations are motivational mantras that enlighten our minds and enthuse our hearts. They are packed with wisdom and experience of age. They are learning from what the world’s wisest have said about a specific subject. I hope the readers will find it interesting and useful on one or more subjects covered in this publication.

Book excerpt: Author and leader who is also a servant; a motivator who is also a steward; a teacher: conscientious and innovative; a counselor: compassionate yet assertive. A man of integrity and honor; Elder Sean D. Smith is not only a minister but a visionary. While Webster’s dictionary defines excellence as the quality of being excellent; state of possessing good qualities in an eminent degree, exalted merit; and superiority in virtue; this definition could easily have been simplified by stating: the works of the Lord through Sean D. Smith Born May 4th of 1993, Sean is the only child of Latanya Williams. At an early age Sean developed a heart for God and his people. December 14th of 2008 Sean accepted his call into the ministry under the leader of Elder Daniel X. Smith. At the age of 15 years old Sean preached his first sermon entitled "Nothing Old Attached". While the road has not been easy Sean would say it has definitely been worth it and ten years later Sean has developed into a powerful young man of God flowing in all five ministry gifts. Elder Smith's life continues to be an example of the works of the Lord: how ability and anointing come together to create an illustration of a chosen vessel. Eyes have not seen, nor ears heard, the great things God has in store for Elder Sean D. Smith and his family.
