Book excerpt: Destination Italy is the true story about how and why an atheist and her Christian husband come to live in Umbria, the green heart of Italy. In engaging descriptions, Milly Born portrays her bumpy journey in search of God, interwoven with striking excerpts from their life in Italy. Having explored many roads on her quest for happiness to no avail, Milly senses that something essential is missing in her life. Is it the child she so desperately desires, or something as fundamental as an overall purpose? Struggling with emotional wounds and intellectual pride, she sets out on a spiritual journey. Along the way, books, circumstances, and people she meets make her ponder the possibility of a higher power. Eventually, she recognizes how a living God has pursued her all her life. What happens when she surrenders to him and accepts his direction? It is not always easy to discern Gods purposes in day-to-day events and experiences. This lively and fascinating story seeks to incite you to reflect and recognize Gods guidance in your own life, so that you too may discover the path toward your divine destination.

Book Migration Italy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graziella Parati
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2013-12-31
  • ISBN : 1442620080
  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book Migration Italy written by Graziella Parati and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of migration, Italy is often thought of as a source country - a place from which people came rather than one to which people go. However, in the past few decades, Italy has indeed become a destination for many people from poor or war-torn countries seeking a better life in a stable environment. Graziella Parati's Migration Italy examines immigration to Italy in the past twenty years, and explores the processes of cultural hybridization that have occurred. Working from a cultural studies viewpoint, Parati constructs a theoretical framework for discussing Italy as a country of immigration. She gives special attention to immigrant literature, positing that it functions as an act of resistance, a means to talk back to the laws that regulate the lives of migrants. Parati also examines Italian cinema, demonstrating how native and non-native filmmakers alike create parallels between old and new migrations, complicating the definitions of sameness and difference. These definitions and the complexities inherent in the different cultural, legal, and political positions of Italy's people are at the heart of Migration Italy, a unique work of immense importance for understanding society in both modern-day Italy and, indeed, the entire European continent.

Book The Beautiful Country

Download or read book The Beautiful Country written by Stephanie Malia Hom and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, Italy swells with millions of tourists who infuse the economy with billions of dollars and almost outnumber Italians themselves. In fact, Italy has been a model tourist destination for longer than it has been a modern state. The Beautiful Country explores the enduring popularity of “destination Italy,” and its role in the development of the global mass tourism industry. Stephanie Malia Hom tracks the evolution of this particular touristic imaginary through texts, practices, and spaces, beginning with the guidebooks that frame Italy as an idealized land of leisure and finishing with destination Italy's replication around the world. Today, more tourists encounter Italy through places like Las Vegas's The Venetian Hotel and Casino or Dubai's Mercato shopping mall than experience the country in Italy itself. Using an interdisciplinary methodology that includes archival research, ethnographic fieldwork, literary criticism, and spatial analysis,The Beautiful Country reveals destination Italy's paramount role in the creation of modern mass tourism.

Book Italian Mobilities

Download or read book Italian Mobilities written by Ruth Ben-Ghiat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian nation-state has been defined by practices of mobility. Tourists have flowed in from the era of the Grand Tour to the present, and Italians flowed out in massive numbers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Italians made up the largest voluntary emigration in recorded world history. As a bridge from Africa to Europe, Italy has more recently been a destination of choice for immigrants whose tragic stories of shipwreck and confinement are often in the news. This first-of-its-kind edited volume offers a critical accounting of those histories and practices, shedding new light on modern Italy as a flashpoint for mobilities as they relate to nationalism, imperialism, globalization, and consumer, leisure, and labor practices. The book’s eight essays reveal how a country often appreciated for what seems immutable - its classical and Renaissance patrimony - has in fact been shaped by movement and transit.
