This is a story of redemption set in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique in the mid-1990s, a time of nervous energy, opportunity and fear, in a region that has only recently emerged from bitter colonial wars of independence and subsequent civil wars. The peace is delicate and rancorous, racial attitudes coagulate and retribution is borne on the wind of change. Mike, a white Zimbabwean in his mid-thirties, a former Rhodesian soldier who fought against Robert Mugabe’s guerrilla armies, is struggling to find his place in the world. His marriage is crumbling against a backdrop of PTSD, alcohol and self-recrimination. Phoebe, a black Zimbabwean, grew up in Mugabe’s guerilla camps of central Mozambique. Her mother, a guerrilla herself, was killed in a Rhodesian raid in 1977. Unbeknown to Phoebe, her father is Norman Mubvunduku, the Zimbabwean minister for state security who controls the sinister Central Intelligence Organization (CIO). Salim, a member of Frelimo, the Marxist party that holds power in Mozambique, manages the state-owned hotel in the central Mozambican port city of Beira, from where he runs the city’s prostitution ring. Norman Mubvunduku, on his many official, and unofficial, visits to Mozambique is counted among Salim’s most valued clients. Salim’s star performer is Phoebe whom he ‘rescued’ from the UNHCR camps in the mid-1980s. Mike does business in Beira—where the disfigured street urchin, João, ‘adopts’ Mike as his patrão, his patron, guarding Mike’s pick-up truck being among his many self-appointed duties—a city that Mike visits more than is necessary to escape his atrophying marriage and the stifling racial attitudes of Zimbabwe. He meets Phoebe—emerging from a brutal sexual assault by one of Salim’s clients Norman Mubvunduku)—at a local club and they fall in love, just as a violent cyclone sweeps up the Mozambique Channel. An irresistible train of events is set in motion: Phoebe walks out on Salim; Mike is fired from his job in Harare and leaves his marriage; Salim has João picked up and cruelly tortured in an effort to find out where Phoebe is; Mubvunduku sets his CIO onto Phoebe’s trail in an effort to establish her identity, at the same time inculpating Mike in her disappearance; and Mike and Phoebe flee to Lusaka, Zambia when it becomes clear that their lives are at stake. In Beira, Mubvunduku and Salim are killed in a grenade explosion as João takes his revenge—with João presumed dead—which clears the way for Phoebe and Mike to return to Mozambique. UNHCR documents come to light, proving Phoebe’s father was Mubvunduku. It also emerges that Mike, as a soldier on the 1977 raid, witnessed Phoebe’s mother’s death and in fact ordered the troops not to shoot the girl. Phoebe remembers his voice. However, it is all too much for Phoebe to absorb and her final parting from Mike is acrimonious. But separation is transient: João, now an amputee, returns from the dead several months later to announce to Mike that he has been sent by Phoebe to find him and bring him back to her.

The II International Seminar on Research on Mediatization and Social Processes had a program developed at two levels: Debate panels, with invited researchers – five tables with the participation of researchers from Sweden (1), Russia (1), Portugal (1), Argentina (1), and Brazil (6). Intotal, there were 15 hours of debates at the five debate panels. This second event gave continuity to the first International Seminar on Research on Mediatization and Social Processes, which also had guest researchers. In the first seminar, the five panels were attended by researchers from France (3), Denmark (1), Argentina (2), and Brazil (4). Therefore, methodologically, the Seminar takes place in the articulation of debate panels with international guests and working groups, with the presence of researchers, doctors, doctoral students, Masters, and master’s degree students. We emphasize that, still in the scope of training processes, master’s and doctoral students, masters and doctors, post-doctoral students and post-doctors, and members of the organizing Research Group take part in them as reviewers, in a blind evaluation, of the expanded abstracts submitted by graduates with lower titles – under the coordination of researchers/professors of the Research Group on Mediatization and Social Processes. They evaluated (in a group of more than three dozen reviewers) each of the works submitted by colleagues with training at a lower level, with classification grades, which resulted in the approved papers. Then, they were grouped by the organizing committee, successively, until the event’s working groups were formed. A total of 237 abstracts were submitted. They were selected in the following proportion of participants: 21% of professors/researchers; 33% doctors and doctoral students; 33% masters and master’s students; 13% graduates and undergraduate students, linked to scientific initiation research project and/or with research results of a senior research project. In the first seminar, in 2016, there were 250 submissions by authors and 217 expanded abstracts. Out of these, around 188 works were selected. At both events, half of the participants were from universities in other states (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais, mainly). Among its results, in addition to the training processes in the course of its realization, we emphasize its consolidation in a library of reflections, in the form of complete articles of the presentations in Working Groups and books published in e-book format (with chapters produced by the participants of the debate panels). This was the unit that brought the 'Fireforce' concept to the world's attention--the devastatingly ruthless airborne envelopment and annihilation of a guerrilla enemy. Dubbed "The Killing Machine" by Charles D. Melson, chief historian of the US Marine Corps, the RLI was a veritable 'foreign legion' with over 20 diverse nationalities serving in her ranks. The RLI, a truly international airborne battalion, fought the bitter Zimbabwean 'bush war' for 15 years, against the overwhelming tide of communist-trained guerrillas. Kill rates don't win wars, but during its brief 19-year history, it is estimated that the RLI accounted for between 12,000 and 15,000 enemy guerrillas, for the loss of 135 men. RLI soldiers were recipients of four Silver Crosses and 42 Bronze Crosses of Rhodesia. An RLI trooper holds the world record for operational parachute descents --a staggering 73 op jumps--most under 500 feet! The Saints is not intended as a definitive history but, with more of a classic 'scrapbook' feel, the presentation attempts to capture the essence of this fine unit--what it was like to be a troopie, one of the 'ouens'. Alexandre Binda was born in Beira, Mozambique in 1945. He joined the Rhodesian Army in 1965. Although he had attested into the Pay Corps, he was to get more operational and combat experience than any of his colleagues. Between 1968 and 1972 he took part in a dozen or so deployments with RLI and SAS combat-tracker teams in support of the Portuguese Army in the Tete Province of Mozambique, countering Frelimo and ZANLA guerrilla incursions from the north. He was awarded a Military Forces Commendation. During his 15 years in the Rhodesian Army, he did a four-year tour of duty with the Selous Scouts and was commissioned in 1979. Alex is a keen student of African military history and has written several articles for Lion & Tusk, the magazine of the Rhodesian Army Association. He is also author of Masodja--A History of the Rhodesian African Rifles.
