Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social influence processes play a key role in human behavior. Arguably our extraordinary evolutionary success has much to do with our subtle and highly developed ability to interact with and influence each other. In this volume, leading international researchers review and integrate contemporary theory and research on the many ways people influence each other, considering both explicit, direct, and implicit, indirect influence strategies. Three sections examine fundamental processes and theory in social influence research, the role of cognitive processes and strategies in social influence phenomena, and the operation of social influence mechanisms in group settings. By applying the latest research to a wide range of interpersonal phenomena, this volume greatly advances our understanding of social influence mechanisms in strategic social interaction, and should be of interest to all students, researchers and practitioners interested in the dynamics of everyday interpersonal behavior.

Book On the Early Development of Mind

Download or read book On the Early Development of Mind written by Edward Glover and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Early Development of Mind by Edward Glover covers a period of thirty years in which he gathered together and annotated his various contributions to this most obscure of all psychoanalytical themes. He approaches mind from various angles, in particular the vicissitudes of the libido, of ego-formation, and of the emotions. The work is offered in chronological order and with unabashed changes to enhance readability. His clinical studies are orientated from the same angles and he deals, inter alia, with the developmental aspects of normal and disordered character, alcoholism, drug addiction, perversions, obsessional neuroses, and psychoses. Of out standing significance are his papers on the psychoanalytical classification of mental disorders, on the nature of reality sense, and on the 'functional' aspects of the mental apparatus. Glover was well aware of the dangers of uncontrolled, abstract theorizing, and several of his later essays exhibit an unflinching resolution to apply the strictest scientific standards not only in the regulation of research and the control of technique, but also in the teaching and the training of psychoanalysts. The book represents a remarkable achievement indispensable to the psychoanalytical student, the psychiatrist, and all who wish to ground themselves in the principles and history of psychoanalysis.

Book Social Context and Cognitive Performance

Download or read book Social Context and Cognitive Performance written by Pascal Huguet and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on twenty years of research on the social regulation of academic performances, this book offers theoretical and empirical arguments in favour of the inclusion of the social dimension of human beings as essential for their cognitive activities. We all engage in social interactions, compare ourselves with other people, belong to social groups, and are the object of a myriad of categorisations. Not only do such social experiences affect cognition, but they actually determine its form and its content. Several experiments indeed reveal that cognitive performance depends on the relationship between the individual and the social context in which cognition takes place. And this relationship is not forged directly by features of the situation, but rather by personal construals of these features (most notably social comparison). This fact alone justifies granting the individual's social experiences a psychological status and it further strengthens the key idea of this book, namely that the social context only exists through the intervention of cognitive processes of contextualization (producing a "cognitive context of the self") such as those involved in autobiographical memory. A "social psychology of cognition" is suggested, in which the fashionable distinction between cognition and social cognition makes no sense. From this innovative perspective it is indeed more the social nature of the individual rather than that of the object to be processed that defines the social nature of cognition. Well-known phenomena such as social facilitation and social loafing as well as established educational practices are also re-examined from this perspective.
