Book Designing and Developing Products through Knowledge Transfer Collaborations

Download or read book Designing and Developing Products through Knowledge Transfer Collaborations written by Anthony Crabbe and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using case studies ranging from medical devices to construction products, this book offers a detailed insight into the ways in which new products can be developed through ‘knowledge transfer’ (KT) collaborations between manufacturers and universities. KT collaborations are not simply aimed at developing new products; their ultimate goal is to improve the partners’ knowledge of the product field and to pass on that knowledge to others in appropriate ways. This book examines some of the tensions inherent in such an arrangement and the ways of addressing them. The insights offered by this book will improve understanding about the ways in which commerce and academia can work together and about the design methods required when working to international standards. This understanding will be useful not only to industrial designers and design researchers, but also to those involved in developing medical devices designed to be used by patients. The book was developed as a way of forming a body of Anthony’s design research papers into a narrative that addresses many of the current tensions and debates concerning the relationship between design academics and manufacturing companies.

Book Dynamic Knowledge Transfer and Knowledge Development for Product and Process Design Teams

Download or read book Dynamic Knowledge Transfer and Knowledge Development for Product and Process Design Teams written by Gulru Ozkan-Seely and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider a manager who invests in knowledge development of a product and a process design team as well as knowledge transfer between teams throughout a new product development (NPD) project. Knowledge development at a particular time (e.g., prototyping and experimentation) increases a team's level of knowledge at that time. In contrast, the recipient's benefits from knowledge transfer may be lagged due to the difficulties in articulating and documenting knowledge as well as the challenges regarding its interpretation and application. Over time, as each team embeds knowledge in the NPD project, the levels of product and process performance increase, thereby increasing the net revenue earned at the product launch time. In a key contribution to the literature, analytic conditions are given that characterize the dynamic rates at which knowledge development and knowledge transfer occur throughout the project. We show that the investment in knowledge development for each team and knowledge transfer between teams may be constant, front-loaded, back-loaded, U-shaped, or the peak rate may be delayed over time. As such, we show how concurrent engineering is optimally pursued throughout the NPD project.

Book Knowledge Transfer in Requirements Engineering in Collaborative Product Development

Download or read book Knowledge Transfer in Requirements Engineering in Collaborative Product Development written by Anyanitha Distanont and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, collaborative strategies are an important part of developing the capabilities to be able to compete in the 21st Century since knowledge or innovations cannot develop entirely within a single firm. Collaboration provides invaluable resources that a firm cannot create through knowledge transfer mechanisms. The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to enhance understanding of knowledge transfer in requirements engineering in the context of collaborative product development. The research is qualitative by nature and utilises the case study methodology. Data collection was conducted through interviews and surveys with informants in high-tech enterprises. The results indicate that collaboration in product development is very important and acts as a means of obtaining external resources, especially knowledge. However, collaboration is not an easy practice; it involves many challenges. In order to improve the practice of collaboration, it is necessary to manage and leverage the transfer of knowledge. According to the results, in order to increase the effectiveness of knowledge transfer over enterprise interfaces, each knowledge type needs to be transferred through the suitable transfer channel at the right time. The results also indicate that the individual relationships among buyers and suppliers are an essential element for long-term collaboration and common platforms or tools need to be developed to support collaborative product development over enterprise interfaces.

Book Managing New Product Innovation

Download or read book Managing New Product Innovation written by B. Jerrard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New product design and development is often the result of personal vision. Harnessing this often requires a special receptiveness and enthusiasm at all levels of an organization, which serves to unlock potential and can turn the entire organizational pyramid upside-down. It is particularly important to understand and develop those aspects of design which can be constructively employed by designers in a strategic alliance with management and research.; The papers in this volume result from the conference of the Design Society held at the University of Central England in September 1998. They show how design-led product development has worked in a range of industries, from engineering through to design and management consultancy. Not only practitioners but also students of industrial design and management should find this a valuable contribution to the subject.

However they are being progressively transformed and this edited volume contains contributions that demonstrate how these new challenges are being dealt with in a variety of ways, reflecting the balance of rigour and creativity that has always characterised the field. Originally presented at COOP ’08 which took place in Carry-le-Rouet, France in 2008, the contributions to this volume have been substantially extended and revised. New technologies, new domains and new methods are described for supporting design and evaluation. Taking a progressive and critical stance, the authors cover a variety of themes including inter-organisational working, non task-based environments, creativity, and the development of Web 2.0 (and even Web 3.0) applications, including new cooperative mechanisms and new classification possibilities.

Book Towards Modern Collaborative Knowledge Sharing Systems

Download or read book Towards Modern Collaborative Knowledge Sharing Systems written by Piotr Lipiński and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new technologies still accelerates. As a result the requirement of easy access to high quality information is essential in modern scientific society. We believe that new cloud-based online system will replace the old system of books and magazines in the future. This is mainly because contemporary system of journal and conference publications appears to be outdated, especially in such domains as computer science, because process of publishing of an article takes too much time. In this book a new approach of sharing knowledge is proposed. The main idea behind this new approach is to take advantage of collaboration techniques used in industry to share the knowledge and build teams which work on the same subject at different locations. This will allow to accelerate the exchange of information between scientists and allow to build global teams of researchers who deal with the same scientific subjects. Furthermore, an easy access to structured knowledge will facilitate cross domain cooperation. This book describes the concept of a cross-domain platform which can be used for scientific cooperation. It also familiarizes readers with new concepts and technologies which are used in the platform and introduces the first projects which are developed using this technology. It is expected to be of special interest to researchers and professionals in computer science and mechanics.
