The classical synthetic tools to obtain long-range regularity are, however, limited to noncovalent interactions, which usually yield structurally more random products. Hence, a combination of porosity and regularity in organic covalently bonded materials requires not only the design of molecular building blocks that allow for growth into a nonperturbed, regular geometry but also a condensation mechanism that progresses under reversible, thermodynamic, self-optimizing conditions. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a variety of 2D crystalline porous materials composed of light elements, resemble an sp2-carbon-based graphene sheet but have a different molecular skeleton formed by orderly linkage of building blocks to constitute a flat organic sheet. COFs have attracted considerable attention in the past decade because of their versatile applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, sensing, drug delivery, and optoelectronic materials development. Compared to other porous materials, COFs allow for atomically precise control of their architectures by changing the structure of their building blocks, whereby the shapes and sizes of their pores can be well-tuned. Covalent Organic Frameworks is a compilation of different topics in COF research, from COF design and synthesis, crystallization, and structural linkages to the theory of gas sorption and various applications of COFs, such as heterogeneous catalysts, energy storage (e.g., semiconductors and batteries), and biomedicine. For a long time, they were covered by two terms: van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding. Both experimental and quantum chemical studies have contributed to our understanding of the nature of these interactions. In the last decade, great progress has been made in identifying, quantifying, and visualizing noncovalent interactions. New types of interactions have been classified—their energetic and spatial properties have been tabulated. In the past, most studies were limited to analyzing the single strongest interaction in the molecular system under consideration, which is responsible for the most important structural properties of the system. Despite this limitation, such an approach often results in satisfactory approximations of experimental data. However, this requires knowledge of the structure of the molecular system and the absence of other competing interactions. The current challenge is to go beyond this limitation. This Special Issue collects ideas on how to study the interplay of noncovalent interactions in complex molecular systems including the effects of cooperation and anti-cooperation, solvation, reaction field, steric hindrance, intermolecular dynamics, and other weak but numerous impacts on molecular conformation, chemical reactivity, and condensed matter structure.

"Synmet" or "synthetic metal" conjugated polymers, with their metallic characteristics, including conductivity, are of special interest to researchers. An area of limitless potential and application, conjugated polymers have sparked enormous interest, beginning in 2000 when the Nobel Prize for the discovery and development of electrically conducting conjugated polymers was awarded to three scientists: Alan J. Heeger, Alan G. MacDiarmid, and Hideki Shirakawa. Conjugated polymers have a combination of properties—both metallic (conductivity) and polymeric; doping gives the conjugated polymer's semiconducting a wide range of conductivity, from insulating to low conducting. The doping process is a tested effective method for producing conducting polymers as semiconducting material, providing a substitute for inorganic semiconductors. Doping in Conjugated Polymers is the first book dedicated to the subject and offers a comprehensive A-to-Z overview. It details doping interaction, dopant types, doping techniques, and the influence of the dopant on applications.
