Download or read book ISC Security Design Criteria for New Federal Office Buildings and Major Modernization Projects written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-05-16 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1999, GSA and the U.S. Department of State convened a symposium to discuss the apparently conflicting objectives of security from terrorist attack and the design of public buildings in an open society. The symposium sponsors rejected the notion of rigid, prescriptive design approaches. The symposium concluded with a challenge to the design and security professions to craft aesthetically appealing architectural solutions that achieve balanced, performance-based approaches to both openness and security. In response to a request from the Office of the Chief Architect of the Public Buildings Service, the National Research Council (NRC) assembled a panel of independent experts, the Committee to Review the Security Design Criteria of the Interagency Security Committee. This committee was tasked to evaluate the ISC Security Design Criteria to determine whether particular provisions might be too prescriptive to allow a design professional "reasonable flexibility" in achieving desired security and physical protection objectives.
Download or read book Effects of Nuclear Earth Penetrator and Other Weapons written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underground facilities are used extensively by many nations to conceal and protect strategic military functions and weapons' stockpiles. Because of their depth and hardened status, however, many of these strategic hard and deeply buried targets could only be put at risk by conventional or nuclear earth penetrating weapons (EPW). Recently, an engineering feasibility study, the robust nuclear earth penetrator program, was started by DOE and DOD to determine if a more effective EPW could be designed using major components of existing nuclear weapons. This activity has created some controversy about, among other things, the level of collateral damage that would ensue if such a weapon were used. To help clarify this issue, the Congress, in P.L. 107-314, directed the Secretary of Defense to request from the NRC a study of the anticipated health and environmental effects of nuclear earth-penetrators and other weapons and the effect of both conventional and nuclear weapons against the storage of biological and chemical weapons. This report provides the results of those analyses. Based on detailed numerical calculations, the report presents a series of findings comparing the effectiveness and expected collateral damage of nuclear EPW and surface nuclear weapons under a variety of conditions.
Download or read book Blast Effects on Buildings written by David Cormie and published by Thomas Telford Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflects developments in the field of blast engineering since the early 1990s. Combining coverage of the design standards, codes and materials with an appreciation of the needs and demands of the designer, this book provides the engineer with a comprehensive source of reference for the main elements of blast engineering design in modern practice.
Download or read book Shipboard Shock and Navy Devices for Its Simulation written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most damaging aspects of the combat environment to which Navy ships are exposed is the mechanical shock resulting from the explosion of warheads. The detonation of a large weapon at a considerable distance from the ship produces a shipboard shock environment throughout the entire ship which is potentially damaging to all shipboard equipment and systems. Information has been accumulated on the characteristics and operation of the devices specified by MIL-S-901 for the shock testing of shipboard equipment--the Navy HI Class Shock Machines and the Floating Shock Platform. Other shock machines are also used by the Navy and other services but are not considered here. This material has been gathered from many sources, most of which are not readily accessible, and is intended to provide background information. Equipments are accepted for shipboard use if they comply satisfactorily with the shock test and design procedures prescribed by MIL-S-901.

Download or read book Emergency Response Guidebook written by U.S. Department of Transportation and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the identification number 60 indicate a toxic substance or a flammable solid, in the molten state at an elevated temperature? Does the identification number 1035 indicate ethane or butane? What is the difference between natural gas transmission pipelines and natural gas distribution pipelines? If you came upon an overturned truck on the highway that was leaking, would you be able to identify if it was hazardous and know what steps to take? Questions like these and more are answered in the Emergency Response Guidebook. Learn how to identify symbols for and vehicles carrying toxic, flammable, explosive, radioactive, or otherwise harmful substances and how to respond once an incident involving those substances has been identified. Always be prepared in situations that are unfamiliar and dangerous and know how to rectify them. Keeping this guide around at all times will ensure that, if you were to come upon a transportation situation involving hazardous substances or dangerous goods, you will be able to help keep others and yourself out of danger. With color-coded pages for quick and easy reference, this is the official manual used by first responders in the United States and Canada for transportation incidents involving dangerous goods or hazardous materials.
