Book Design Optimization and Applications of Few cycle Ti Sapphire Lasers

Download or read book Design Optimization and Applications of Few cycle Ti Sapphire Lasers written by 李晉·陳 and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ti:Sapphire mode-locked lasers are a unique technology that enables a wide variety of applications. Owing to the ultrabroadband nature of the Ti:sapphire crystal and the invention of precisely engineered dispersion-compensating mirrors (DCMs), these lasers are now capable of generating stable pulse trains directly with octave-spanning spectrum, few-cycle pulse duration, and a desired repetition rate from a compact system. This paves the way to a new world of emerging applications ranging from the search of exoplanets, high-harmonic generation, to precision measurement Qualitatively, the key to the stable mode-locking of Ti:Sapphire lasers lies in the balance of various spatial and temporal nonlinear effects such as self-amplitude modulation(SAM), self-phase modulation(SPM), saturable absorption, self-focusing, gain-filtering, gain-guiding, and so on. However, since much shorter pulses and much higher intracavity intensities are often reached inside the laser gain medium, the spatiotemporal dynamics in such lasers are even more complicated as non-negligible multi-photon processes also come into play. Due to the strong coupling between these effects, performing a reliable analysis and optimization become extremely challenging. In this thesis we study the spatiotemporal dynamics of pulse evolution in the few-cycle regime and provide guidelines for designing and optimizing these lasers for repetition rate ranging from 85 MHz to 2 GHz. The essential background reviews as well as key concepts in KLM lasers will be given together with a demonstration of octave-spanning Ti:sapphire lasers with record-high repetition rate. A numerical model for simulating the full spatiotemporal dynamics is introduced. For an efficient numerical calculation, GPU accelerated computing techniques are adopted. With this model, many unique features that are observed from the experiments can be simulated for the first time. A novel type of output coupler called gain-matched output coupler is introduced which can greatly reduce the nonlinearity required for ultrabroadband mode-locking. Already at pump power levels close to the cw lasing threshold it is possible to initiate robust mode-locking and generate

Book Few Cycle Laser Pulse Generation and Its Applications

Download or read book Few Cycle Laser Pulse Generation and Its Applications written by Franz X. Kärtner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the physics, technology and applications of short pulse laser sources that generate pulses with durations of only a few optical cycles. The basic design considerations for the different systems such as lasers, parametric amplifiers and external compression techniques which have emerged over the last decade are discussed to give researchers and graduate students a thorough introduction to this field. The existence of these sources has opened many new fields of research that were not possible before. These are UV and EUV generation from table-top systems using high-harmonic generation, frequency metrology enabling optical frequency counting, high-resolution optical coherence tomography, strong-field ultrafast solid-state processes and ultrafast spectroscopy, to mention only a few. Many new applications will follow. The book attempts to give a comprehensive, while not excessive, introduction to this exciting new field that serves both experienced researchers and graduate students entering the field. The first half of the book covers the current physical principles, processes and design guidelines to generate pulses in the optical range comprising only a few cycles of light. Such as the generation of relatively low energy pulses at high repetition rates directly from the laser, parametric generation of medium energy pulses and high-energy pulses at low repetition rates using external compression in hollow fibers. The applications cover the revolution in frequency metrology and high-resolution laser spectroscopy to electric field synthesis in the optical range as well as the emerging field of high-harmonic generation and attosecond science, high-resolution optical imaging and novel ultrafast dynamics in semiconductors. These fields benefit from the strong electric fields accompanying these pulses in solids and gases during events comprising only a few cycles of light.

Book Optimization of Sub 10 Femtosecond Titanium Sapphire Lasers

Download or read book Optimization of Sub 10 Femtosecond Titanium Sapphire Lasers written by Jeffrey Nary Russom and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kerr-lens mode locked Ti:sapphire lasers are the backbone of most ultrafast and attosecond pulse generation systems. As such when building such systems the experimentalist desires an easy to use and robust system to produce femtosecond pulses for use in experiments. Towards this end I will discuss the issues involved in perfecting Kerr-lens mode locked Ti:sapphire laser technology and present experimental results on a new type of output coupler designed using chirped mirror technology. This new type of output coupler promises improved stability and improved spatial and spectral pulse qualities. In addition I will also discuss the phenomenon of Ince-Gaussian modes, which constitute a more general solution to the paraxial wave equation than the regular Hermite and Laguerre Gaussian solutions. By studying these modes, we hope to discover a relationship between the observed Ince-Gaussian mode patterns in the continuous wave beam of the laser and use this to determine the correct operating alignment for the laser cavity.

Book A New Generation of Ultrafast Oscillators for Mid Infrared Applications

Download or read book A New Generation of Ultrafast Oscillators for Mid Infrared Applications written by Nathalie Nagl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first successful realization of a compact, low-noise, and few-cycle light source in the mid-infrared wavelength region. By developing the technology of pumping femtosecond chromium-doped II-VI laser oscillators directly with the emission of broad-stripe single-emitter laser diodes, coherent light was generated with exceptionally low amplitude noise — crucial for numerous applications including spectroscopy at high sensitivities. Other key parameters of the oscillator's output, such as pulse duration and output power, matched and even surpassed previous state-of-the-art systems. As a demonstration of its unique capabilities, the oscillator's powerful output was used to drive — without further amplification — the nonlinear generation of coherent mid-infrared light spanning multiple octaves. The resulting table-top system uniquely combines high brilliance and ultrabroad spectral bandwidth in the important mid-infrared spectral range. The rapid development of this technology is comprehensively and lucidly documented in this PhD thesis. Together with a thorough review of literature and applications, and an extensive analysis of the theoretical foundations behind ultrafast laser oscillators, the thesis will serve as a valuable reference for the construction of a new generation of mid-infrared light sources.

Book Directly Diode laser pumped Titanium doped Sapphire Lasers

Download or read book Directly Diode laser pumped Titanium doped Sapphire Lasers written by Peter Roth and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium-doped sapphire is one of the most versatile laser gain materials. Tunable between 0.7 m and 1.1 m and capable of generating femtosecond pulses, the Ti:sapphire laser has become an important tool for many applications. Its ubiquitous use across many scientific disciplines is increasingly complemented by commercial applications including imaging, spectroscopy, micro-processing of materials and the generation of terahertz radiation. However, today's Ti:sapphire lasers are complex, bulky and expensive, leaving many applications unaddressed, particularly where lower costs and smaller footprints are vital. The biggest hurdle to smaller and cheaper Ti:sapphire lasers is the pump light source - typically a frequency-doubled, multi-watt neodymium or optically pumped semiconductor laser. Ideally, such intricate and expensive pump lasers would be replaced by compact, robust and cheap diode lasers. Two factors have prevented this: first, Ti:sapphire has a broad but relatively weak absorption in the blue-green region of the spectrum where high-power diode lasers are not currently available; and second, the very short upper laser level lifetime of Ti:sapphire and relatively large parasitic losses result in a high intrinsic laser threshold. Combined, these factors strongly favour high-brightness pump sources. The recent progress in diode lasers based on gallium nitride materials now opens the way to challenge the perceived wisdom that Ti:sapphire cannot be diode-pumped. In this work diode-laser pumping of Ti:sapphire lasers has been shown to be possible. The world's first diode-laser-pumped Ti:sapphire laser has been developed, enabling drastic reductions in cost and size over current systems. Using innovative approaches to exploit gallium nitride diode lasers as the pump source, both continuous-wave operation and generation of femtosecond pulses have been demonstrated. As a result, some of the unrivalled performance of today's high-cost, lab-bound Ti:sapphire lasers may soon be available at a fraction of the current cost and footprint.

Book Femtosecond Optical Frequency Comb Principle Operation and Applications

Download or read book Femtosecond Optical Frequency Comb Principle Operation and Applications written by Jun Ye and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years, there has been a convergence between the fields of ultrafast science, nonlinear optics, optical frequency metrology, and precision laser spectroscopy. These fields have been developing largely independently since the birth of the laser, reaching remarkable levels of performance. On the ultrafast frontier, pulses of only a few cycles long have been produced, while in optical spectroscopy, the precision and resolution have reached one part in Although these two achievements appear to be completely disconnected, advances in nonlinear optics provided the essential link between them. The resulting convergence has enabled unprecedented advances in the control of the electric field of the pulses produced by femtosecond mode-locked lasers. The corresponding spectrum consists of a comb of sharp spectral lines with well-defined frequencies. These new techniques and capabilities are generally known as “femtosecond comb technology. ” They have had dramatic impact on the diverse fields of precision measurement and extreme nonlinear optical physics. The historical background for these developments is provided in the Foreword by two of the pioneers of laser spectroscopy, John Hall and Theodor Hänsch. Indeed the developments described in this book were foreshadowed by Hänsch’s early work in the 1970s when he used picosecond pulses to demonstrate the connection between the time and frequency domains in laser spectroscopy. This work complemented the advances in precision laser stabilization developed by Hall.

Book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers

Download or read book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser has revolutionized many areas of science and society, providing bright and versatile light sources that transform the ways we investigate science and enables trillions of dollars of commerce. Now a second laser revolution is underway with pulsed petawatt-class lasers (1 petawatt: 1 million billion watts) that deliver nearly 100 times the total world's power concentrated into a pulse that lasts less than one-trillionth of a second. Such light sources create unique, extreme laboratory conditions that can accelerate and collide intense beams of elementary particles, drive nuclear reactions, heat matter to conditions found in stars, or even create matter out of the empty vacuum. These powerful lasers came largely from U.S. engineering, and the science and technology opportunities they enable were discussed in several previous National Academies' reports. Based on these advances, the principal research funding agencies in Europe and Asia began in the last decade to invest heavily in new facilities that will employ these high-intensity lasers for fundamental and applied science. No similar programs exist in the United States. Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers assesses the opportunities and recommends a path forward for possible U.S. investments in this area of science.
