The overall objectives of the program were the following were (1) development of free-electron lasers in the millimeter and far-infrared region. (2) facilitate the application of far-infrared free-electron lasers to research in frontier science and technology and (3) training of researchers in the development, operation and application of free-electron lasers. A free electron laser-facility, unique in world, has been developed which is operational from 200 GHz, (6.6 cm 1), to 4.8 THz, (160 cm-1), tunable under computer control and able to deliver kilowatts of millimeter wave an far-infrared power. An important part of this facility is a well equipped user lab that has been used to perform ground breaking experiments in scientific areas as diverse as biophysics, bio-medicine, magnetism, semiconductors and laser physics. Nine graduate students and post doctoral researchers have been trained in the operation, use and application of these free-electron lasers.

Book excerpt: It's principal objective is to demonstrate the operation of electrostatic accelerator free-electron lasers in 1) the Far Infrared Radiation submillimeter region at high average power and high overall efficiency using a single stage FEL and 2) the visible IR region with modest power and modest overall efficiency using a two-stage FEL. An important feature of the FEL is the recovery of the spent electron beam. Both 1) the average laser power and 2) the overall efficiency of the FEL increase with increased electron beam collection efficiency. Optimum laser performance can be achieved with this device provided only a small fraction of the total electric charge stored in the beam is lost while transporting it through the system. Realization of this low charge loss condition can be achieved only if a very high quality electron beam can be produced and maintained throughout the electron accelerator and transport system. It is for this reason that a considerable amount of FEL project time has been dedicated to the design of a high quality electron beam source and an electron transport and recovery system having a minimum amount of optical aberrations.

The FEL is based on a 50 MeV RF linac operating in synchronization to the Advanced Light Source (ALS), and will produce intense (100 [mu]J per micropulse), narrow bandwidth (narrower than 0.1%) radiation between 3 [mu] and 50 [mu]. In the design, we pay particular attention to the FEL stability issues and require that the fluctuations in electron beam energy and in timing be less then 0.05% and 0.1 ps respectively. The FEL spectrum can then be stabilized to about 10−3, or if grating is used, to 10−4. We discuss various sources of fluctuations in the gun, the bunchers and the accelerator sections, as well as the feedback and feedforward schemes to reduce these fluctuations. The accelerator structure is chosen to be of the side coupled, standing wave type for easier control. The beam transport is made isochronous to avoid the coupling between the energy and the timing fluctuations. 12 refs., 1 fig.

Book excerpt: This document describes a free-electron laser (FEL) proposed as part of the Chemical Dynamics Research Laboratory (CDRL), a user facility that also incorporates several advanced lasers of conventional design and two beamlines for the ALS. The FEL itself addresses the needs of the chemical sciences community for a high-brightness, tunable source covering a broad region of the infrared spectrum -- from 3 to 50 [mu]m. All of these sources, together with a variety of sophisticated experimental stations, will be housed in a new building to be located adjacent to the ALS. The radiation sources can be synchronized to permit powerful two-color, pump-probe experiments that will further our fundamental understanding of chemical dynamics at the molecular level, especially those aspects relevant to practical issues in combustion chemistry. The technical approach adopted in this design makes use of superconducting radiofrequency (SCRF) accelerating structures. The primary motivation for adopting this approach was to meet the user requirement for wavelength stability equal to one part in 104. Previous studies concluded that a wavelength stability of only one part in 103 could be achieved with currently available room-temperature technology. In addition, the superconducting design operates in a continuous-wave (cw) mode and hence offers considerably higher average optical output power. It also allows for various pulse-gating configurations that will permit simultaneous multiuser operations. A summary of the comparative performance attainable with room-temperature and superconducting designs is given. The FEL described in this report provides a continuous train of 30-ps micropulses, with 100[mu]J of optical energy per micropulse, at a repetition rate of 6.1 MHz. The device can also deliver pulses at a cw repetition rate of 12.2 MHz, with a peak power of 50 [mu]J per micropulse. 70 ref.
