The objective of this research was to understand the state of the art of non-metallic SIP forms and to develop design guidelines and performance specifications that can be used locally for the construction of highway bridge decks. Four major types of stay-in-place (SIP) forms using fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) or fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials were investigated: fiber reinforcements, grid reinforcements, bar reinforcements and pultruded profiles. The results were used to develop a model design and construction specification for non-structural, non-metallic, SIP forms in highway bridge decks.

Book excerpt: This report documents and presents results of a study to determine time-dependent behavior and relevant design criteria for simple-span precast, prestressed bridge girders made continuous. A questionnaire was used to determine current practice. Creep and shrinkage tests of steam-cured concrete loaded at an early age were made. Computer simulations were used to investigate the effects of time-dependent material behavior and variation in design parameters on the effective continuity for live load plus impact. The findings suggest that positive moment connections in the diaphragms at the piers are not required and provide no structural advantages. The findings also suggest that effective continuity for live load plus impact can vary from 0 to 100% dependent on the design parameters and timing of construction. Computer analyses were also used to determine an upper limit for the amount of negative moment reinforcement over the supports to insure full moment redistribution and attainment of maximum bridge strength. New computer programs were developed for simplified analysis to determine time-dependent effects and service moments. Recommendations for design procedures were presented and design examples given.

Book excerpt: "In the Fall of 1951, as a result of an agreement between the Portland Cement Association and the Missouri State Highway Department, with the approval and good wishes of the United States Department of Commerce, Bureau of Public Roads, the State Highway Department embarked on a program to design and construct several precast, prestressed, and precast-prestressed concrete highway bridges. The purpose of this extensive program being to indicate to State Highway officials and other interested parties the advantages of these types of construction. In the words of Mr. S.W. O'Brien, District Engineer for the Bureau of Public Roads, "The use of a precast deck (girder) would begin a practice that may lead to worthwhile economies in secondary bridges of short spans." The two primary advantages of small precast concrete highway bridges are (1) the contractors could form and cast the girders at a time and a site that was convenient to their labor, equipment, and material supplies, and (2) they require a much shorter construction period. The first advantage mentioned above would allow the contractor to form and cast the girders during his otherwise slack season at an economical location. He would thereby have an increased annual volume of business and a more stable and experienced staff of employees on his payroll. The second advantage mentioned would eliminate long delays in getting the structure open to traffic. Both advantages indicate a big saving in time, labor, money, and material to the contractor, most of which will unquestionably be reflected back to the State Highway Department. The difficulty with this type of design is in finding an economical girder section. The most desirable girder section is one in which the design stresses for both the concrete and the reinforcing steel are approaching their maximum allowable stresses. In attempting to find a desirable section, the allowable design stresses for concrete were varied from 1000 pounds per square inch to 1500 pounds per square inch, while the design stress for reinforcing steel remained constant at 18,000 pounds per square inch"--Abstract, leaves 1-2

This bulletin, prepared by the experts of Task Group 6.5 'Precast concrete bridges', takes a closer look at the conceptual (preliminary) design of prefabricated concrete bridges. The bulletin does not have the ambition to define the umbrella term 'conceptual design' but shows in a pragmatic way, using 24 examples spread all over the world, how leading designers use this methodology to select from the many possibilities to arrive at an ideal solution taking into account all design conditions. One often reads that experience is a necessary condition for good conceptual design. The pooled knowledge and experience in this bulletin already provide the reader with a good head start. Book excerpt: Throughout the United States accelerated bridge construction is becoming increasingly popular to meet growing transportation demands while keeping construction time and costs to a minimum. This research focuses on eliminating the need to form full-depth concrete bridge deck overhangs, accelerating the construction of concrete bridge decks, by using full-depth precast prestressed concrete deck panels. Full-depth precast overhang panels in combination with cast-in-place (CIP) reinforced concrete are experimentally and analytically investigated to assess the structural performance. Experimental loaddeformation behavior for factored AASHTO LRFD design load limits is examined followed by the collapse capacity of the panel-to-panel seam that exists in the system. Adequate strength and stiffness of the proposed full-depth panels deem the design safe for implementation for the Rock Creek Bridge in Fort Worth, Texas. New failure theories are derived for interior and exterior bridge deck spans as present code-based predictions provide poor estimates of the ultimate capacity. A compound shear-flexure failure occurs at interior bays between the CIP topping and stay-in-place (SIP) panel. Overhang failure loads are characterized as a mixed failure of flexure on the loaded panel and shear at the panel-to-panel seam. Based on these results design recommendations are presented to optimize the reinforcing steel layout used in concrete bridge decks.
