Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design of Plate Girders In order to develop the designs consistently, the specifications Of the New York, New Haven Hartford Railroad are used as a basis and then discussed in detail as the design is proceeded with. The chapter on box girders has been worked out on similar lines, using a fixed load and without using any specifications. The material on deflections, contributed by Prof. W. H. Lawrence Of the Massachusetts Institute Of Technology, has never before been printed for general distribution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Design of Plate Girder Bridges This book has been written for the benefit of young Engineers and Draughtsmen engaged on the design of Constructional Steelwork, and is particularly intended for those whose training has been more on the theoretical than the practical side. It is the result of practical experience both in manufacture and design, and the examples given and opinions expressed are based on actual practice. In writing this book, it' has been assumed that the reader has a certain knowledge of Applied Mechanics and the Strength of Materials, and beyond mentioning the case of a Simple Beam, these subjects have. Book Plate Girder Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plate Girder Construction Classic Reprint written by Isamu Hiroi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plate-Girder Construction For railway as well as highway bridges, there is probably no other form of girders that are more extensively used and daily being constructed than plate girders. The reason for this lies mainly in the simplicity of their construction and their stiffness as compared with Open-girders. That the construction of a plate-girder is simple, is, however, no reason to suppose that the stresses produced in it by external forces are, also, simple. On the contrary, to de termine the actual stresses in every part of a plate-girder is one of the most complicated problems that can come in the way of bridge engineers. Book Plate Girder Railway Bridges Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plate Girder Railway Bridges Classic Reprint written by Maurice Fitzmaurice and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plate-Girder Railway Bridges The great majority of bridges on a line of railway are short-span plate-girder bridges. This book is intended to help those young engineers who, joining an engineers office for the first time, find themselves engaged in this class of work. All complicated calculations have been avoided and the object in view has been to help the student or pupil to design a bridge of this kind efficiently, cheaply, simply, and in accordance with modern practice. The theoretical knowledge required is small, and an attempt has been made not to enlarge on this part of the subject more than absolutely necessary. Practical details with regard to construction and erection, together with particulars of market sizes of plates, &c., have been given as far as possible. A chapter has been given to specifications for steel and iron, and to some notes on the treatment of these metals in the manufacture of bridge work, accompanied by some remarks on the working stresses to be adopted in these materials. Book Graphics and Structural Design Classic Reprint

Download or read book Graphics and Structural Design Classic Reprint written by H. D. Hess and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graphics and Structural Design This text is intended for the author's classes in General Engineering Design in Sibley College, Cornell University. The treatment of the subject has been kept as general as possible and is that used for his students during the past four or five years. The problems chosen for discussion are those on the border line between Civil and Mechanical Engineering. To the general designer knowledge of this subject is indispensable while acquaintance with the methods used in determining the stresses in, and the subsequent designing of, structures is of the greatest benefit to others in all designing for strength whether of machines or structures. Although the book is called "Graphics and Structural Design" the determination of the stresses has not been confined to graphical means; the other usual methods have been included. The design of a plate girder may seem out of keeping with the purpose of the book. The author formerly used a crane runway girder instead of the railway bridge, but decided that the railway girders made the more comprehensive and better problem. The design of the latter permitted the use of the moment table and acquainted the student with the usual method of treating locomotive and train loads. Incidentally, one who could design a railway plate girder was well prepared to design a runway girder, although the reverse was not so generally true. The author's practice is to use a set of problems paralleling the drawing-room work, to assign a number of these problems each week to the students upon which they recite. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plate Girder Stiffeners: Thesis for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Illinois, Presented June, 1910 The object of the use of stiffeners on plate girders is not well understood by the majority of engineers. The stressesiin stif feners and the theoretical treatment of them is an indefinite pr0b= lem in itself, and can only be solved by experimental investigation. The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect or stiffeners on the strength of model built-up plate girders and to determine the stresses in the stiffeners of a plate girder in actual railroad use, The present theory and method of design is reviewed and a summary 0 the experimental work in this subject is stated The effect of the number of stiffeners and the length of the outstanding legs of stifl fenars on the strength of plate girders is clearly shown by means of curves. A discussion of the results of each experiment is recorded after each set of tests, and a general discussion of the results may be found in the conclusion. The girders are designed for Waddell's Class R loading, which consists of two ton engines followed by ifioo pounds per linear foot, for a dead load of 750 pounds of steel per linear foot, and 450 pounds per linear foot for track. In the investigation the live load is considered the same as that used in the design, but the dead load is taken directly from the computations which are the actual calculated weights. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bridge and Structural Design Both analytical and graphical methods have been employed for obtaining stresses, and the one which seemed best suited for any particular subject has been adopted. But few are given, as it was thought unnecessary to repeat information given in any of the rolling mills' hand-books. Although the hook is intended principally for students and draughts men, there are parts which may be of interest to practicing bridge designers. Particular attention is here drawn to Art. I7, which treats of the design of a knee - braced mill building; and to Art. 19, which discusses the rivet spacing and web splices in plate girders, in which one-eighth of the web plate is counted on as flange area.
