Book excerpt: "Polar codes have received a great deal of attention in the past few years to the extent that they are selected to be included in the 5th Generation of Wireless Communications Standard (5G). Specifically, polar codes were selected as the coding scheme for the Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) control channel which requires codes of short length. The main bottleneck in the deployment of polar codes in 5G is the design of a decoder which can achieve good error-correction performance, with low hardware implementation cost and high throughput. Successive-Cancellation (SC) decoding was the first algorithm under which polar codes could achieve capacity when the code length is very high. However, for finite practical code lengths, SC decoding falls short in providing a reasonable error-correction performance because of its sub-optimality with respect to the Maximum-Likelihood (ML) decoder. Sphere Decoding (SD) is an algorithm that can achieve the performance of ML decoding with a very high complexity. In order to close the gap between SC and ML decoding, Successive-Cancellation List (SCL) decoding keeps a list of candidates and selects the one with the best Path Metric (PM). Although SCL provides a good error-correction performance, it comes at the cost of higher complexity and lower throughput. In this thesis, we first propose a low complexity SD algorithm which provides a good trade-off between the error-correction performance and the complexity of the decoder for polar codes of short lengths. We then propose algorithms to speed up the SCL decoders. We prove that while these algorithms have much higher throughput than the conventional SCL decoder, they incur no error-correction performance loss. We further propose several techniques to reduce the area occupation in the hardware implementation of SC and SCL decoders by reducing their memory requirements. We solve the flexibility issue of fast SC-based decoders and introduce a completely rate-flexible scheme. Hardware architectures for the proposed algorithms are presented and comparisons with state of the art are made. Finally, we evaluate the performance of polar codes in 5G and we show that polar codes can be used in practical applications by proposing a blind detection scheme with polar codes." --

Book excerpt: Polar codes, recently accepted for adoption in 5G standard due to their excellent performance at a very low complexity compared to other competitive schemes in the literature, are deemed to be a strong candidate for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications as well due to meeting their requirements. However, since polar codes construction is naturally channel-dependent, there has recently been an increasing interest in addressing the challenge of making polar codes work in realistic fading environments as they do in a binary symmetric channel (BSC). Recent studies on polar codes for fading channels have mainly focused on constructing new specific polar codes suitable to particular fading channels. This results in a non-universal code structure, leading to continuous changes in the code structure based on the channel, which is not desirable in practice. To address this problem, we develop and propose a novel transceiver architecture which enables using the polar coding design of a binary input additive white Gaussian noise (BI-AWGN) channel for multi-path fading channels without causing any changes in the structure of the encoder and decoder sides. This is made possible by eliminating the channel fading effect so that a net AWGN channel can be seen at the input of a simple successive cancellation decoder (SCD). The novelty of the proposed solution lies in using a channel-based orthonormal transformation with optimal power allocation at the transmitter and another transformation at the receiver to make the net, effective channel seen by the SCD very similar to an AWGN channel. The obtained results show that the proposed design makes the bit error rate (BER) performance of polar codes over a frequency selective fading channel the same as that over an AWGN channel. As an additional great advantage, the proposed design is found to be capable of providing confidentiality against eavesdropping receivers (i.e., unintended users) at the physical layer. Particularly, wireless physical layer security is delivered by the proposed scheme because of the fact that the transmitted data blocks are designed based on the channel of the legitimate receiver, which is naturally different from that of an eavesdropper, who is normally located several wavelengths away from the legitimate receiver and thus experiencing a different channel.==========================================================This short-length e-book is meant for students (master and Ph.D.), researchers, engineers, practitioners, and instructors who are interested in wireless communication and signal processing. These are known as source and channel coding techniques. Source coding helps to compress the data and improves bandwidth utilization. Channel coding adds redundancy to make data more reliable. Error correction coding is the means whereby errors can be detected and corrected using redundant bits. Error correction codes are of two types, forward error correction and automatic repeat request. Mobile communications have seminal importance in present telecommunication systems. Wireless transmission is used to convey data between user end and base stations. The communication errors are caused due to noise, interference and poor signal strength. Mobile communication system presently uses Turbo channel code to detect and correct errors. Presently, there is a high demand for mobile services and its applications. Usage of smart phones has increased largely and that is demanding higher data rate and large network capacity to meet intensive service requirements. This demands large bandwidth which is limited and valuable resource. The requirements to support real time voice communication in mobile system with different available standards are Bit Error Rate and Latency. Further, the capacity to scale up in channels, coverage area and seamless integration of Polar-code based systems with minimum design efforts are thrust areas. Shannon, pioneer of information theory expressed in year 1948, that data can be transmitted reliably through the channel at maximal possible rate. The prime goal of coding theory since 1948 till date is to design a practical error correcting coding scheme that can be implemented in real time communication. The work focuses on developing such practical Polarcode based system. Polar-codes was introduced by Erdal Arikan in 2009. The application considered in present work is voice and data for mobile communication. Polar-code is used along with spectrum efficient MPSK modulation techniques in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise. The main objective is to increase the number of users with same bandwidth. Simulation is carried out to optimize the Power, Bandwidth and Latency parameters for acceptable Bit Error Rate of 10-4. Taguchi and Response Surface Methodology techniques are used for performance optimization using Polar-code. A single transmission time interval mechanism is used for circuit switching technique. Based on this, a Polar-code based OFDM system is simulated with 12 subcarriers. It is observed that the SNR required to achieve BER of 10-4 is 5.84 dB, 12.62 dB, 18.84 dB for QPSK, 8 PSK and 16 PSK modulations respectively. To extend the applicability to packet switching technique with BER of 10-4, three transmission time intervals mechanism is simulated with Polar-code OFDM system. The SNR of 2.84 dB, 9.62 dB, 15.84 dB is obtained for QPSK, 8 PSK and 16 PSK modulations respectively. The experimentation has been carried on a frame of length 528 bits with QPSK and 16 PSK OFDM system. Here Polar-code is used for bit error correction and CRC of 8-bit, for frame error detection. The frame error rate considered is of 10-3 and 10-4. This system provides link utilization of 32.43% and 32.46 % for data rate of 100 Mbps. With 10 Mbps data rate, link utilization achieved is 75% and 83.32 %.

Book excerpt: In the next era of communications, where heterogeneous, asynchronous and ultra-low latency networks are drawn on the horizon, classical cryptography might be inadequate due to the excessive cost of maintaining a public-key infrastructure and the high computational capacity required in the devices. Moreover, it is becoming increasingly difficult to guarantee that the computational capacity of adversaries would not be able to break the cryptograms. Consequently, information-theoretic security might play an important role in the future development of these systems. The notion of secrecy in this case does not rely on any assumption of the computational power of eavesdroppers, and is based instead on guaranteeing statistical independence between the information message and the observed cryptogram. This is possible by constructing channel codes that exploit the noisy behavior of the channels involved in the communication.Although there has been very substantial research in the last two decades regarding information-theoretic security, little has gone to study and design practical codes for keyless secret communication. In recent years, polar codes have changed the lay of the land because they are the first constructive and provable channel codes that are able to provide reliability and information-theoretic secrecy simultaneously. Additionally, their explicit construction and the low complexity of the encoding/decoding schemes makes them suitable for the new generation of communication systems.The main objective of this dissertation is to provide polar coding schemes that achieve the best known inner-bounds on the capacity regions of different multiuser models over the discrete memoryless broadcast channel. These models not only impose a reliability constraint, but also some sort of information-theoretic secrecy condition in the presence of eavesdroppers. In general, we focus on describing the construction and the encoding/decoding schemes of the the proposed polar code for a particular setting. Then, we analyze the reliability and the secrecy performance of these schemes in order to prove that they are able to achieve these inner-bounds as the blocklength tends to infinity. The first part of the thesis drives the attention to two different models over the degraded broadcast channel that commonly appear in real communication systems. In this models, there are a set of legitimate receivers and a set of eavesdroppers that can be ordered based on the quality of their channels. According to this ordering, different reliability or secrecy constraints apply for each legitimate receiver or eavesdropper respectively. Moreover, we propose practical methods for constructing the polar codes for both models and analyze the performance of the coding schemes by means of simulations. Despite we only evaluate the construction for these two particular settings, the proposed methods are also suitable for any polar coding scheme that must satisfy some reliability and secrecy conditions simultaneously.In the second part of the dissertation we describe and analyze two different polar coding schemes for the general broadcast channel (where channels are not necessarily degraded) with two legitimate receivers and one eavesdropper. We consider a model where a confidential and a non-confidential message must be reliably decoded by both legitimate receivers in presence of an eavesdropper. Despite it is almost immediate to find an inner-bound on the capacity for this model using random coding arguments, how to secretly convey the same confidential message to both legitimate receivers using polar codes is not straightforward. We also analyze the setting where a transmitter wants to send different confidential and non-confidential messages to the corresponding legitimate receivers. We compare two inner-bounds on the capacity of this model, and we design a polar coding scheme that achieves the inner-bound that surely includes the other.
