Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation into the material properties, column strengths and beam-column strengths of cold-formed high strength stainless steel square hollow sections (SHS) and rectangular hollow sections (RHS) is presented in this thesis. The behaviour of cold-formed SHS and RHS of high strength materials of duplex and high strength austenitic stainless steel was investigated. The material properties of the test specimens were obtained by tensile coupon tests, residual stress measurements and stub column tests. The initial local and overall geometric imperfections of the specimens were also measured. Furthermore, the stub column test strengths were compared with the design strengths predicted using the American, Australian/New Zealand and European specifications for cold-formed stainless steel structures. The test programs on cold-formed high strength stainless steel columns and beam-columns of duplex stainless steel, having the yield stress and tensile strength up to 750 and 850 MPa respectively, were described. The material properties of the test specimens were obtained from tensile coupon and stub column tests. The columns were compressed between fixed ends at different column lengths, while the beam-columns were compressed between pinned ends with different loading eccentricities. The initial overall geometric imperfections of the column and beam-column specimens were measured. The strength and behaviour of cold-formed high strength stainless steel columns and beam-columns were investigated. The column and beam-column test strengths were compared with the design strengths predicted by the American, Australian/New Zealand and European specifications. Generally, the design strengths predicted by the specifications are conservative for the cold-formed high strength stainless steel columns and beam-columns. In addition, reliability analysis was performed to evaluate the current design rules for pure compression members. It is recommended that the cold-formed hi.

Yet the high price of stainless steel limits the application to construction projects. The lean duplex stainless steel (EN 1.4162) offers an opportunity for stainless steels to be used more widely due to its competitive in price, good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The lean duplex stainless steel is a relatively new material, and research on this material is limited. Currently, the lean duplex stainless steel is not covered in any design specification, and no design rules are available for such material. Therefore, the behaviour and design of cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel members are investigated in this study. The investigation focused on columns, beams and beam-columns of square and rectangular hollow sections. Both experimental and numerical investigations were performed and reported. Design rules for cold-form lean duplex stainless steel members are proposed. The experimental investigation included material tests, column tests, beam tests and beam-column tests at room and elevated temperatures ranged from 24 - 900 C. The test specimens were cold-rolled from flat strips. The test program consists of two square hollow sections and four rectangular hollow sections. Coupon specimens were extracted from each hollow section, and their material properties were obtained from tensile coupon tests at room temperature and elevated temperatures. In this study, a modified design rule was proposed to predict the cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel material properties at elevated temperatures. The local and overall geometric imperfections were measured. A total of 38 column tests were conducted. The effective column length ranged from 75 to 1660 mm in order to obtain a column curve for each test series. The test program for beams included 10 pure bending tests, and the bending capacities of the specimens were determined. A total of 37 beam-column specimens were compressed between pinned ends at different eccentricities in order to obtain an interactive curve for each series of test. Numerical investigation on columns, beams and beam-columns at room temperature as well as elevated temperatures are also presented. Accurate finite element models were developed and verified against the experimental results for columns, beams and beam-columns at room temperature. The structural members at elevated temperatures were simulated by replacing the material properties with those obtained at elevated temperatures. Extensive parametric studies were carried out, including 150 columns, 126 beams and 150 beam-columns at room temperature, as well as 180 columns, 125 beams and 195 beam-columns at elevated temperatures. Column, beam and beam-column strengths obtained from the experimental and numerical investigations as well as available data were compared with the design strengths calculated using American, Australian/New Zealand, European specifications for stainless steel structures of duplex material, since lean duplex material is not covered by these specifications. In addition, direct strength method for carbon steel and stainless steel as well as continuous strength method for stainless steel were assessed for cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel. Modified design rules were proposed. The reliability of the current and modified design rules was evaluated

Book New Approach for Efficient Design of Stainless Steel RHS and SHS Elements

This book was released on 2016 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the cross-section and member behaviour of cold-formed stainless steel RHS and SHS elements and proposes an alternative and more efficient design approach. Combined with aesthetic appeal, exceptional mechanical properties and excellent corrosion and fire resistances, efficient design methods present stainless steel as an attractive alternative to the usual carbon steel for structural applications. Exhaustive studies of the nonlinear stress-strain behaviour and the analytical modelling of the response are presented for different stainless steel alloys. The study was based on 600 experimental stress-strain curves obtained from the literature and complemented with 42 tensile coupon tests. Although the material model currently included in Annex C of EN1993-1-4 (2006) was found to accurately represent the measured stress-strain curves for the different stainless steel grades and material types, revised equations were proposed for the strain hardening parameters n and m and for the ultimate tensile stress and strain for ferritics. A comprehensive experimental programme on five cross-sections of ferritic stainless steel grade 1.4003 tubular elements is also described. The actual geometry and initial geometric imperfections were carefully measured and the material response of flat and corner regions of each section were characterized by conducting 20 tensile tests on coupons extracted from the cross-sections. The cross-sectional behaviour was investigated through 10 stub column tests under pure compression and 16 subjected to combined loading conditions, while 8 beams were tested under four-point bending configuration and 4 subjected to three-point bending loading conditions. At member level, the bending moment redistribution capacity of ferritic continuous beams was investigated by conducting 9 five-point bending tests. Finally, 12 tests were conducted on ferritic stainless steel columns to determine the behaviour of members subjected to concentric and eccentric compression loads. Additional data on austenitic, ferritic and duplex stainless steel elements was generated from parametric studies based on finite element models validated from the conducted experiments. The assessment of the codified design expressions was derived by comparing experimental and numerical strengths with the calculated resistance predictions for stainless steel cross-sections and members subjected to different loading conditions. Results demonstrated that predictions are noticeably conservative for stocky and slender cross-sections since enhanced material properties are not considered and the susceptibility of cross-sections to local buckling is underestimated. Thus, a full slenderness range Direct Strength Method (DSM) approach was proposed for stainless steel RHS and SHS cross-sections and members based on the same strength curve for all loading conditions. The proposed approach was found to be more accurate for cross-sections, columns and beam-columns since strain hardening effects are incorporated and due to the fact that the actual stress distribution of the cross-section is considered when determining the slenderness. The reliability of the approach was demonstrated by statistical analyses, enabling its use in structural design standards. Finally, the applicability of design approaches based on plastic analysis to stainless steel continuous beams was assessed. The analysis of continuous beam strengths demonstrated that capacity predictions based on the first hinge formation result in a considerable overconservatism and that traditional plastic design can be safely applied with the Class 1 cross-section limit provided in EN1993-1-4 (2006). However, it was also statistically demonstrated that the best capacity predictions are obtained for design methods including both bending moment redistribution and strain hardening effects, such as the Continuous Strength Method for indeterminate structures or the proposed DSM-based approach.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled BEHAVIOUR OF HIGH STRENGTH STEEL COLUMNS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES Submitted by Ju Chen for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in April 2007 In this study, the structural behaviour of high strength steel columns at elevated temperatures is investigated. The current fire resistant design rules for steel columns in most of the specifications are generally based on the investigation of hot-rolled steel having normal strength. Although similarities between the conventional normal strength and high strength steel exist, there is sufficient diversity in their mechanical properties for different treatments in design. Therefore, there is a need to develop the design rules of high strength steel columns at elevated temperatures. Material properties play an important role in the performance of steel structural members. Hence, an extensive material test program was first performed on high strength steel at elevated temperatures. The high strength steel includes cold-formed steel, stainless steel as well as quenched and tempered carbon steel. Structural carbon steel having normal strength was also tested for comparison. The mechanical properties and stress-strain curves of the tested steel were obtained and compared with predictions from the American, Australian, British and European specifications. In addition, equations predicting the mechanical properties and stress-strain curve model for the tested materials at elevated temperatures were proposed. The column behaviour of cold-formed steel built-up closed sections with intermediate web stiffeners at normal room temperature was investigated. The test results were compared with the design strengths obtained using the direct strength method. An accurate and reliable finite element model of cold-formed steel built-up columns was developed and verified against the test results. A parametric study was carried out using the verified finite element model. Design rules for cold-formed steel built-up closed section columns at normal room and elevated temperatures modified from the direct strength method were proposed. The behaviour of cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures has been investigated using finite element method. The suitability of the effective width method and direct strength method for cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures was evaluated. The behaviour of quenched and tempered high strength carbon steel columns at elevated temperatures was also investigated. The finite element analysis results were compared with the design strengths using the American, Australian and European specifications. Generally, it is shown that the effective width method and direct strength method using the reduced material properties conservatively predicted the column strengths.
