Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Design Fabrication and Characterization of a 2 D SOI MEMS Micromirror with Sidewall Electrodes for Confocal MACROscope Imaging

Download or read book Design Fabrication and Characterization of a 2 D SOI MEMS Micromirror with Sidewall Electrodes for Confocal MACROscope Imaging written by Yanhui Bai and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) micromirrors have been developed for more than two decades along with the development of MEMS technology. They have been used into many application fields: optical switches, digital light projector (DLP), adoptive optics (AO), high definition (HD) display, barcode reader, endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) and confocal microscope, and so on. Especially, MEMS mirrors applied into endoscopic OCT and confocal microscope are the intensive research field. Various actuation mechanisms, such as electrostatic, electromagnetic, electro bimorph thermal, electrowetting, piezoelectric (PZT) and hybrid actuators, are adopted by different types of micromirrors. Among these actuators, the electrostatic is easily understood and simple to realize, therefore, it is broadly adopted by a large number of micromirrors. This thesis reports the design, fabrication, and characterization of a 2-D Silicon-on-insulation (SOI) MEMS micromirror with sidewall (SW) electrodes for endoscopic OCT or confocal microscope imaging. The biaxial MEMS mirror with SW electrodes is actuated by electrostatic actuators. The dimension of mirror plate is 1000micronx1000micron, with a thickness of a 35micron. The analytical modeling of SW electrodes, fabrication process, and performance characteristics are described. In comparison to traditional electrostatic actuators, parallel-plate and comb-drive, SW electrodes combined with bottom electrodes achieve a large tilt angle under a low drive voltage that the comb-drive does and possess fairly simple fabrication process same as that of the parallel-plate. A new fabrication process based on SOI wafer, hybrid bulk/surface micromachined technology, and a high-aspect-ratio shadow mask is presented. Moreover, the fabrication process is successfully extended to fabricate 2x2 and 4x4 micromirror arrays. Finally, a biaxial MEMS mirror with SW electrodes was used into Confocal MACROscope for imaging. Studied optical requirements in terms of two optical configurations and frequency optimization of the micromirror, the biaxial MEMS mirror replaces the galvo-scanner and improves the MACROscope. Meanwhile, a new Micromirror-based Laser Scanning Microscope system is presented and allows 2D images to be acquired and displayed.

Book Design Fabrication and Characterization of a High speed Bimodal CMOS MEMS Resonant Scanner Driven by Temperature gradient Actuators

Download or read book Design Fabrication and Characterization of a High speed Bimodal CMOS MEMS Resonant Scanner Driven by Temperature gradient Actuators written by Sergio Camacho León and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the development of a Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical (MOEM) scanner with dual resonant operation and operating at previously unachievable scan frequencies. The conceived MOEM scanner relies on optical reflections to modify the propagation characteristics of an incident laser beam over a one-dimensional sampling space. The actuation mechanism of this MOEM scanner is based on the out-of-plane rotation of a movable micro-mirror suspended by multimorph thermal actuators. The proposed scanner uses temperature gradients to induce the driving forces of the actuators and scans up to its second resonance frequency. These features overcome the disadvantage of low response speed in uniformly-heated thermoelastic actuators. Ultimately, the MOEM scanner is intended to enhance the transverse scanning performance of a time-domain, full-field endoscopic optical coherence imaging (EOCI) system. The development of the proposed MOEM scanner comprises stages for design, fabrication and characterization. Principal contributions of the dissertation are found in the design stage in which a multimorph formulation was derived for optimal design of the device. In the fabrication stage, a MOEM scanner with optimized layout was manufactured by employing a highly-customizable, CMOS-MEMS micromachining process offered jointly by Jazz Semiconductor, Inc. and Carnegie Mellon University. Finally, a hybrid, numerical-experimental characterization stage is presented to demonstrate the functionality of the device. Resonance peaks were measured at 6.4 and 44.7 kHz in atmospheric-pressure conditions, meaning that at second resonance the device is 459% faster than the previous state-of-the-art device.
