Book Design Considerations for Sealing the Shafts of a Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal Vault

Download or read book Design Considerations for Sealing the Shafts of a Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal Vault written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shafts in an underground disposal system, which constitutepotential pathways between the disposal vault and the biosphere, should be effectively sealed if the system is to perform as ahydrodynamic and geochemical barrier for the safe containment ofnuclear fuel waste. In the design of the shaft backfill, consideration should be given to ensure that the backfill and thebackfill/rock interface remain intact. Design-related problems, including critical pathways for the transport of radionuclides, configuration of shaft backfill and its functional requirements, the state of stress in a backfilled shaft with particularemphasis on the arching and load transfer phenomenon arediscussed in this report.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of a disposal vault in the Canadian Shield for the effective isolation of nuclear fuel wastes is being assessed as part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. A conceptual design study was conducted to seal and backfill the shafts. Volume 1 reviews current shaft sinking and lining technologies and factors that could affect the design of a shaft seal system, recommends the preferred construction methods for the shafts, and proposes a conceptual shaft seal. Volume 2 addresses the performance assessment of a shaft seal system. A schedule and cost estimates are included.

Book Sealing of Underground Repositories for Radioactive Wastes

Download or read book Sealing of Underground Repositories for Radioactive Wastes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For high level and alpha bearing radioactive wastes, the disposal concept most generally agreed upon is the emplacement of the conditioned waste in deep underground respositories in stable geological formations. The report reflects the general consensus that long lived radioactive wastes can be isolated safely from human environment in such repositories located in deep, geological formations. One of the most important tasks in the development of underground disposal systems is the plugging of boreholes and the sealing of shafts excavated for either exploratory or operational purposes. Several countries have outlined proposals and identified geological formations for detailed examination as potential host media for waste repositories.

Book Siting Design and Construction of Underground Repositories for Radioactive Wastes

Download or read book Siting Design and Construction of Underground Repositories for Radioactive Wastes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 1986 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium, Hannover, Germany, 3-7 March 1986. The purpose was to review advances made in the area of siting, design and construction of underground repositories for radioactive wastes and to consider developments of future importance. Forty-nine papers were presented, covering general approaches and regulatory aspects, disposal in shallow ground and rock cavities, disposal in deep geological formations and safety assessments.

Book Clay Materials Used in Construction

Download or read book Clay Materials Used in Construction written by George M. Reeves and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2006 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concluding the trilogy on geological materials in construction, this authoritative volume reviews many uses of clays, ranging from simple fills to sophisticated products. Comprehensive and international coverage is achieved by an expert team, including geologists, engineers and architects. Packed with information prepared for a wide readership, this unique handbook is also copiously illustrated. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Professor Sir Alec Skempton. Various definitions of 'clay' are explored. Clay mineralogy is described, plus the geological formation of clay deposits and their fundamental materials properties. World and British clay deposits are reviewed and explained. New compositional data are provided for clay formations throughout the stratigraphic column. Investigative techniques and interpretation are considered, ranging from site exploration to laboratory assessment of composition and engineering performance. Major civil engineering applications are addressed, including earthworks, earthmoving and specialized roles utilizing clays. Traditional earthen building is included and shown to dominate construction in places. Clay-based construction materials are detailed, including bricks, ceramics and cements. The volume also includes a comprehensive glossary.
