The design and wave optics simulations of the proposed system are given. Preliminary results from the multi-conjugate adaptive optics system are also presented. The experimental system utilizes a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator and an interferometric wave-front sensor for correction and sensing of the phase aberrations, respectively.

Book excerpt: Multi-Conjugate Adaptive-Optical (MCAO) systems have been proposed as a means of compensating both intensity and phase aberrations in a beam propagating through strong-scintillation environments. Progress made on implementing a MCAO system at the Starfire Optical Range (SOR), Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, is discussed. As a preliminary step toward controlling a two Deformable Mirror (DM) system, the first-stage intensity redistribution experiment (FIRE) examines one aspect of an MCAO system-control and compensation of wavefront intensity. Two wavefront sensors (WFS) and a single DM are employed for this experiment. One WFS is placed conjugate to the DM while the second WFS is located at a distance which produces a desired fresnel number for the propagation between the WFSS. The WFS measurements are input to a Gerchberg-Saxton based control algorithm in order to determine the DM commands. The phase pattern introduces by the DM is chosen so propagation along the path between the two WFSS produces a desired a desired intensity profile at the second WFS. The second WFS is also used to determine the accuracy of the intensity redistribution and measure its effects on the wavefront phase. In the next phase of MCAO development, a second DM will be added conjugate to the second WFS in order to correct the remaining phase aberrations. The paper presents the setup and operation for FIRE along with initial laboratory results.

Book excerpt: Adaptive optics (AO) is a technology used to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effect of wave front distortions: it aims at correcting the deformations of an incoming wave front by deforming a mirror in order to compensate for the distortion. It is used in astronomical telescopes and laser communication systems to remove the effects of atmospheric distortion, in microscopy, optical fabrication and in retinal imaging systems to reduce optical aberrations. Adaptive optics works by measuring the distortions in a wave front and compensating for them with a device that corrects those errors such as a deformable mirror or a liquid crystal array. Although active optics can ensure that a telescope's main mirror always retains a perfect shape, the turbulence of the Earth's atmosphere distorts images obtained at even the best sites in the world for astronomy. Astronomers have turned to a method called adaptive optics. Sophisticated, deformable mirrors controlled by computers can correct in real-time for the distortion caused by the turbulence of the Earth's atmosphere, making the images obtained almost as sharp as those taken in space. Adaptive optics allows the corrected optical system to observe finer details of much fainter astronomical objects than is otherwise possible from the ground. Active and adaptive optics technology has emerged from the laboratory and is being applied to improve the performance of optical imaging and laser systems. In the last few years, development of both systems and components has accelerated. Many new concepts and devices have appeared, among which are high-performance deformable mirrors, new types of wave front sensors, and more sophisticated wave front processing algorithms. Equally important, a better understanding of the system design aspects of adaptive optics has been reached, particularly of the need for optimizing each system according to its application. Current developments in adaptive optics for ground-based astronomy include the use of IR wavelengths, partial wave front compensation using natural guide stars, and the use of laser guide stars to allow all-sky coverage with full compensation at visible wavelengths. Book excerpt: In recent years a technique known as adaptive optics (AO), commonly used to correct the dynamic wavefront error caused by atmospheric turbulence in ground-based telescopes, has been studied as a means of correcting the dynamic wavefront error caused by aberrations in the human eye, allowing for higher resolution retinal images. In order to compensate for these dynamic aberrations, a compact AO system that tracks and compensates for these changes in real-time is needed. To realize such a system, improvements must be made in two key components, namely the control algorithms and the design of the wavefront corrector. The latter represents the main focus of this thesis. The control problem in adaptive optics systems is generalized to that of shape control for a flexible membrane representing a deformable membrane mirror used in the wavefront corrector. Due to the dynamic nature of the aberrations in the eye, the shape control problem addressed is the tracking of an unknown and time-varying shape for a distributed membrane (i.e., desired shape of the mirror). The proposed controller design approach relies on two steps. The first step is to construct a Q -parameterized set of stabilizing controllers for the system under consideration and to derive conditions on the Q parameter in the controller expression to achieve regulation. Since the desired shape of the mirror is unknown and time-varying, the second step is to derive an online tuning algorithm for the Q parameter in the expression for the parameterized stabilizing controller. The online tuning of the Q parameter allows the controller to converge to the controller needed to achieve regulation, hence compensating for the lack of information on the desired shape for the deformable mirror. Decoupling introduced in the closed loop system allows tuning to be performed using decentralized algorithms.
