Book DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF AN ELECTROMAGNETIC RAILGUN

Download or read book DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF AN ELECTROMAGNETIC RAILGUN written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Railgun is a future weapon for shooting long-range targets with high accuracy. Railgun is an economical weapon as it does not use any kind of propellant for shooting a projectile. It uses high impulsive current to generate the necessary force required to hit the target. The US Navy has been planning to implement railgun system on ships as their long-range shooting weapon. Railgun needs to be charged up to a certain voltage level to generate the necessary force to shoot the projectile to achieve the specified target location. It is very important that minimal voltage is required for shooting the projectile to hit the target accurately as it minimizes the losses occurring in the railgun system. This project focuses on solving this challenge by minimizing the railgun's initial voltage required to shoot a projectile for hitting the target with high accuracy. It also focuses on minimizing the copper losses occurring in the system. In this project, a novel method has been generated which solves both challenges. In this project, a model of the discharging circuit of the railgun and a model of the projectile's trajectory with and without air drag have been generated using Simulink. Then both of these models are merged using MATLAB. Once this model was complete, it simulates the discharge of the capacitor voltage into the railgun system to achieve the necessary acceleration required to launch a projectile with a certain velocity. It also simulates the trajectory of a projectile. In this project, an optimization technique has been implemented using Fmincon to optimize the shooting accuracy to hit the target with minimum copper losses. This has been achieved by generating a code which optimally chooses the initial input voltage required for discharging and the launch angle at which the railgun is kept. At the end, higher than 97.5 % accuracy has been achieved in hitting the target while reducing the copper loss by more than 6 % for both the cases that were modeled.

Book The Design and Optimization of a Power Supply for a One Meter Electromagnetic Railgun

Download or read book The Design and Optimization of a Power Supply for a One Meter Electromagnetic Railgun written by Allan S. Feliciano and published by . This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A naval electromagnetic railgun would be a considerable asset against a littoral environment. By accelerating projectiles to 3 km/s, a naval railgun would be capable of reaching 300-400 nautical miles. Problem such as rail erosion, energy storage and fire control prevent the railgun from becoming a weapon to date, At the Naval Postgraduate School, the Physics Department continues to investigate and develop concepts to overcome these challenges. As part of the methodology, previous students built a one-meter railgun system for experimentation. The existing 1.6 mF power supply is insufficient to fire this railgun effectively. To design a sufficient power supply a MATLAB code was created to simulate a generated current pulse and to predict the subsequent railgun performance. Interrelated factors such as railgun geometry, muzzle velocity, current density and contact surface area were taken into consideration. Also, tradeoffs in capacitance, projectile mass and residual current were weighed against one another to achieve desired railgun performances. From numerous simulations, this study determined that the one- meter railgun with a 21.5 mF power supply could fire a 0.1 58-kg projectile at a velocity of 1 km/s, and leave a residual current of only 4% of the initial energy once the projectile exits the rails.

Book Design and Optimization of a 600 KJ Railgun Power Supply

Download or read book Design and Optimization of a 600 KJ Railgun Power Supply written by Dwight S. Warnock and published by . This book was released on 2003-09-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to explore the design options for a 1. 2-m railgun power supply capable of accelerating a 150-g to 250-g projectile to 1000 m/s. In order to accomplish this task a MATLAB model will be constructed to conduct trade-off studies between various power supply configurations in an attempt to maximize the system performance. The final design shows that by distributing the system capacitance between four equal size banks and firing them sequentially the total system capacitance can be reduced by more than half. Because the capacitor banks are fired sequentially, the current pulse is lengthened resulting in more efficient use of the barrel. The final benefit of using a multiple-bank system is that the individual bank currents are reduced by a factor of four over the single-bank scenario. By reducing the bank currents solid-state switches are now an affordable option further improving the system performance. By applying a systematic approach to optimizing the power supply this study has shown that the energy required to accelerate a 172-g projectile to 1000 m/s can be reduced from 1.3 MJ in the single-bank scenario to 600 KJ by distributing the capacitance over four equal sized banks.

Book Design and Construction of a One Meter Electromagnetic Railgun

Download or read book Design and Construction of a One Meter Electromagnetic Railgun written by Fred Charles Beach and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acceleration of projectiles through the use of electromagnetic forces (Railguns) has many advantages over conventional methods. Foremost are the higher velocities which can be achieved and the reduction in firing platform sensitivity to hits. Projectile velocities on the order of 3-4 kilometers per second allow the use of 'kinetic energy kill' projectiles which are effectively inert munitions. Additionally, by using purely electromotive force for the acceleration, the need for explosive propellants is eliminated. A one meter Electromagnetic Railgun was designed and constructed to serve as a test bed for research into alternative armature materials, rail/armature plasma effects, and current pulse forming techniques. A modular approach was used to allow independent changes in power supply, pulse forming network, bore configuration, and gun augmentation.

Individually, these technologies are having a profound impact on modern conflicts; cumulatively, they are dynamically transforming the character of conflicts in the modern world. The book begins with a comprehensive overview essay on cyber warfare and a large section of A–Z reference entries related to this topic. The same detailed coverage is given to both social media and technology as they relate to conflict in the 21st century. Each of the three sections also includes an expansive bibliography that serves as a gateway for further research on these topics. The book ends with a detailed chronology that helps readers place all the key events in these areas.

Book Design and Construction of an Expandable Series Trans Augmented Electromagnetic Railgun

Download or read book Design and Construction of an Expandable Series Trans Augmented Electromagnetic Railgun written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long range maritime land attack can be accomplished with today's chemically propelled munitions only by sacrificing responsiveness. Projectiles launched with electromagnetic forces can achieve velocities above 2-3 kilometers per second. The technical challenges to be overcome before electromagnetic launch can be considered practical for maritime land attack include development of high density pulsed power supplies, high current power switching and a long life launcher. To investigate electromagnetic launch technology a 1.2 meter railgun was constructed. It was designed to allow augmentation and various bore configurations. The railgun power unit consists of two 11 kV, 830 microfarads capacitors discharging through a 7 micro-H inductor coil. A crowbar circuit provides capacitor protection. Operational testing of the firing circuit, instrumentation, power unit, and launcher structure was satisfactory. The 7 micro-H coil induced currents within the power unit, which adversely effected triggering circuitry. The molybdenum projectiles initially tested proved disappointing due to their tendency to meld with the copper rails. An extended current pulse resulting from such a meld caused failure of the crowbar circuit, which curtailed further testing. The induction coil could safely be discarded, and a revised crowbar circuit will prevent further failure. Future operational testing will focus on alternative armature materials and designs and on operational methods.
