Book U S Army Corps of Engineers

Download or read book U S Army Corps of Engineers written by Linda Harmon and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2002-02 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are concerns about the possible negative impacts that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (CE) construction of water resources projects may have on fish and wildlife and their habitat. This report: (1) determined the number of CE civil works projects for which the Corps completed less than 50% of mitigation before starting construction, and (2) established a panel of scientific experts to examine this. This report assesses the quality of each program's guidance: (1) for the 5 stages of mitigation; (2) for 5 attributes -- currency, clarity, completeness, breadth, and viability of the natural and man-made systems into the future; and (3) overall, taking into consideration the stages and attributes. Book Mitigating Potential Impacts of Ferry Terminal Siting and Design on Eelgrass Habitat

Download or read book Mitigating Potential Impacts of Ferry Terminal Siting and Design on Eelgrass Habitat written by Ronald M. Thom and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Increases in population and ferry traffic in western Washington require expansion of existing terminals, threatening the ecological functions of existing eelgrass ("Zostera marina" L.) meadows. Eelgrass meadows are affected by light reduction and other initial and long-term disturbances associated with terminal construction and maintenance, propeller wash, and bioturbation by macroinvertebrates. Technological mitigation measures showed that concrete blocks with clear plastic centers, reflective material placed under terminals, and artificial lighting can all enhance light under the terminals. Restoration of damaged meadows adjacent to terminals is proposed as an alternative"--National Sea Grant Library publication website.

Book excerpt: Seagrasses are becoming widely used as in situ indicators of the relative health and condition of subtropical and tropical estuarine ecosystems. To permit meaningful management of our estuaries, there is clearly a need to develop and refine ways of effectively monitoring and assessing seagrasses. Book Managing Seagrasses for Resilience to Climate Change

Download or read book Managing Seagrasses for Resilience to Climate Change written by Mats Björk and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seagrasses are flowering plants that thrive in shallow oceanic and estuarine waters around the world. Although there are only about 60 species of seagrasses worldwide, these plants play an important role in many shallow, near-shore, marine ecosystems. There is growing evidence that seagrasses are declining globally because of anthropogenic impacts. This paper presents an overview of seagrasses, the impacts of climate change, and other threats to seagrass habitats. Finally, it proposes tools and strategies for managers to help support seagrass resilience.

This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book assembles the latest research on new design techniques in water supplies using desalinated seawater. The authors examine the diverse issues related to the intakes and outfalls of these facilities. They clarify how and why these key components of the facilities impact the cost of operation and subsequently the cost of water supplied to the consumers. The book consists of contributed articles from a number of experts in the field who presented their findings at the "Desalination Intakes and Outfalls" workshop held at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia in October, 2013. The book integrates coverage relevant to a wide variety of researchers and professionals in the general fields of environmental engineering and sustainable development.
