Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Timber Design Because wood is different from other materials and because it is non homogeneous, most of the design data have been derived from test results. It has been the function of the personnel at the Forest Products Laboratory at Madison, Wisconsin, which is a part of the United States Department of Agriculture, to develop the necessary data for scientific design in wood, and most of the available information is a result of their tests and interpretations. Naturally, then, no book on timber design can be written without due acknowledgment to the staff of the Forest Products Laboratory. Generous use has been made of their publications. Book The Half Timber House

Download or read book The Half Timber House written by Allen W. Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Half-Timber House Its Origin, Design, Modern Plan, and Construction; Illustrated With Photographs of Old Examples and American Adaptations of the Style is written for the general reader by Allen W. Jackson. The preface declares that Jackson's intention for this book is not to provide a "technical treatise" or a serious contribution to the history of architecture. This book has been written, instead, for the primary purpose of bringing the concept of house building to average individuals who are considering building for themselves. This book presents a very practical guide to house building and construction concepts that the author breaks down into easily digestible parts. Jackson has already printed several articles on this topic, and this book brings all of the author's previously written articles on this subject and compiles them into one concise manuscript with key chapters molded in direct response to previously published articles by Jackson. The author has also crafted several illustrations of his own work to represent the ideas and concepts within the book more clearly to the reader. The Half-Timber House Its Origin, Design, Modern Plan, and Construction; Illustrated With Photographs of Old Examples and American Adaptations of the Style is an exciting read for any individual who wants to learn how to build a practical house with their own two hands. This book is a wonderful resource for individuals with no previous building experience, and for readers who are well versed in construction. This book makes for a very informative read for people wanting to learn building basics, those that want to know how to construct a solid home, and those that want to refresh their previously held knowledge about building. Book Building the Wooden House

Download or read book Building the Wooden House written by Konrad Wachsmann and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed - especially among younger architects - a resurging interest in building with wood. The discourse has in no small measure been influenced by Konrad Wachmanns' classic Holzhausbau. And yet, this standard work (originally published in 1930) was out of print for many years. Now Holzhausbau is again available and appears here for the first time in an English language edition. Wachsmann demonstrates how new forms can be achieved when modern manufacturing processes are adapted to the traditional building material wood. He presents three totally different building techniques: the wood frame, the panel, and the log house methods and illustrates then their wide range of application possibilities by analysing plans and photographs of works of some of the century's most renowned architects. Two introductory essays enable the reader to take new hold of the book and a biographical sketch offers an impression of the times in which Wachsmann worked and lived.

Book Building with Logs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Building with Logs Classic Reprint written by Clyde P. Fickes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-23 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building With Logs A building should have a good foundation, and a log structure is no exception to the rule. For the sake of economy in labor and material it is sufficient, in some instances, to place small buildings on piers of concrete or rough native stone, but usually it will be more satisfactory to use continuous walls of stone masonry or con crete to provide uninterrupted support for the logs and thus avoid their tendency to sag. These walls, however, should be provided with small openings for the circulation of air to prevent the wood from dry rotting. Furthermore, the continuous foundation wall has the additional advantage of preventing rodents from getting under the building. In no case should the logs be placed directly upon the ground since wood tends to decay when in contact with the earth. The two end walls of the exterior foundation should be higher than the side walls in order to offset the difference in level of the logs on adjacent walls, the end-wall logs being half their thickness hi her than those on the side walls. Tn building a log wall the chief problem is in closing the opening between each pair of logs. There are various ways of doing this, but only those regarded as most satisfactory will be described in this publication. The width of such openings is affected by several factors: (1) The manner of placing the logs upon each other; (2) the type of corner used where two walls meet; (8) the openings for doors and windows; and (4) the natural shrinkage of wood in the process of drying. Book The Manual Arts for Elementary Schools

Download or read book The Manual Arts for Elementary Schools written by Claude S. Hammock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual Arts for Elementary Schools: Drawing, Design, Construction The work given in this book is not arranged according to any special scheme of work, and in many cases the exercises taken up are so independently planned that they may be used in almost any order. The first part of the book is devoted to wood-working and the latter part to thin metal-working. Practice in using tools for the mere sake of practice is not considered worth while, as, for instance, simply sawing for the sake of learning to saw. It is considered very much better to use the tools in making objects even while learning the various operations. The work, therefore, begins with projects instead of exercises. These projects bring the tool operations into use as nearly as seems possible in the order of their ease in execution and understanding.
