Book Plasma Properties in a Thermionic Converter

Download or read book Plasma Properties in a Thermionic Converter written by R. H. BULLIS and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The properties of the non-equilibrium plasma existing in the interelectrode space of the arc-mode converter were investigated with coaxial electrostatic Langmuir probes. Probe measurements were made as a function of cesium pressure, emitter temperature, interelectrode position and converter output in several low-temperature arc-mode converters. The plasma potential, was found to vary significantly across the interelectrode space. Both the existence of a retarding sheath for electrons very close to the emitter surface and a region farther from the emitter in which the variation in plasma potential is accelerating for electrons have been detected. Significant variations in the plasma potential existing in the space were observed with changes in emitter temperature, cesium pressure, and converter output. The electron energy distribution is non-Maxwellian with a significant number of electrons with energies in excess of 1.4 eV. However, from an analysis of the production and loss rates in the converter, there is an insufficient number of electrons, even in the accelerated electron energy distribution, to account for the enhanced degree of ionization observed in arc-mode operation by single stage electron-atom collisional ionization processes. Further analyses of the production and loss rates using the electron energy distribution indicate that ambipolar diffusion is the dominant loss process in the converter if the major ionic species is Cs(+). However, if the major ionic species in the converter is Cs sub 2(+), then recombination is the dominant loss mechanism. (Author).

Book Thermionic Converter Plasma Analysis

Download or read book Thermionic Converter Plasma Analysis written by R. J. McCandless and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study develops an analysis of thermionic converter sheaths and weakly collisional thermionic converter plasmas. The analysis of thermionic converter sheaths is accomplished through the numerical solution of Poisson's equation and the Vlasov equations for electrons and ions in one dimensional planar geometry subject to half Maxwellian boundary conditions. The analysis considers monotonic accelerating and retarding sheaths and the class of non-monotonic sheaths with a single potential extremum. The results show that some thermionic converter operating points simultaneously admit self consistent monotonic and non-monotonic sheath potential profiles. The analysis of weakly collisional thermionic plasma is accomplished through the numerical solution of a set of plasma transport equations and Poisson's equation in one dimensional planar geometry subject to the known boundary conditions on the electron and ion distribution functions for charged particle emission at the emitter and collector surfaces for a given set of thermionic converter operating conditions. The converter operating condition is specified by the emitter temperature, collector temperature, reservoir temperature, interelectrode spacing, and operating current. The transport equations are derived as a set of moment equations from the Boltzmann equations for electrons and ions. The movement equations conserve mass, momentum, energy and energy flux.

Book Plasmadynamics and Ionization Kinetics of Thermionic Energy Conversion

Download or read book Plasmadynamics and Ionization Kinetics of Thermionic Energy Conversion written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To reduce the plasma arc-drop, thermionic energy conversion is studied with both analytical and numerical tools. Simplifications are made in both the plasmadynamic and ionization-recombination theories. These are applied to a scheme proposed presently using laser irradiation to enhance the ionization kinetics of the thermionic plasma and thereby reduce the arc-drop. It is also predicted that it is possible to generate the required laser light from a thermionic-type cesium plasma. The analysis takes advantage of theoretical simplifications derived for the ionization-recombination kinetics. It is shown that large laser ionization enhancements can occur and that collisional cesium recombination lasing is expected. To complement the kinetic theory, a numerical method is developed to solve the thermionic plasma dynamics. To combine the analysis of ionization-recombination kinetics with the plasma dynamics of thermionic conversion, a finite difference computer program is constructed. It is capable of solving for both unsteady and steady thermionic converter behavior including possible laser ionization enhancement or atomic recombination lasing. A proposal to improve thermionic converter performance using laser radiation is considered. In this proposed scheme, laser radiation impinging on a thermionic plasma enhances the ionization process thereby raising the plasma density and reducing the plasma arc-drop. A source for such radiation may possibly be a cesium recombination laser operating in a different thermionic converter. The possibility of this being an energy efficient process is discussed. (WHK).

Book Investigation of the Neutralization Plasma in Thermionic Converters

Download or read book Investigation of the Neutralization Plasma in Thermionic Converters written by Rodney J. Andersen and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was directed toward obtaining an improved understanding of the properties of the cesium neutralization plasma existing in ignited-mode thermionic converters. Toward this end an analysis was made of electron and ion transport phenomena based on conditions known to exist in thermionic converter plasmas. In support of this analysis, detailed measurements of electron density and temperature in the ignited-mode converter plasma were made using high resolution spectroscopic techniques. With this information, quantitative estimates were made of: the electric field intensity, the electron kinetic energy flux, the ion current density, and the charged particle production rate. On the basis of these results, an interpretation was made of the role played by the cesium neutralization plasma in determining converter performance. (Author).

Book Transport Analysis of a Thermionic Diode Plasma

Download or read book Transport Analysis of a Thermionic Diode Plasma written by Anthony Leonard and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport of electrons and ions in a thermionic converter is analyzed through a pair of Boltzmann equations and an electric field equation. Ionization of cesium neutrals in the gap is accounted for by electron impact with a speed-dependent ionization cross section. Transport of ions is approximately by diffusion theory, neglecting the electric field term that is inversely proportional to the ion mass. After linearizing the electric field term in the electron transport equation, a complete set of solutions to the system of homogeneous equations is determined; these homogeneous solutions form the basis for an expansion of the actual electron, ion, and electric field distributions existing in the converter gap. Finally, very general boundary conditions appropriate to thermionic converter operation are applied to an expansion of the solutions. (Author).
