Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Guide of Mont Saint-Michel However, having respect to the old traditions which are to be taken into account it is interesting to call to mind some parts of Dom Jean Huynes's (1) writings, relating to the foundation of the primitive sanctuary erected by Saint-Aubert in honour of the archangel Saint-Michel, as well as the principal events which happened during the first period of the existence of the Abbey, i. e. from the beginning of the eighth to the end of the eleventh century. According to the author, Saint-Aubert, a bishop of Avranches erected, at the commencement of the eighth century a church in honour of Saint-Michel who had appeared to him several times in his dreams: ... In 708, Saint-Aubert who had overcome, with the help of God, all the difficulties attending the building of his church, and who knew the dimensions which the archangel Saint-Michel wished, worked at it himself. He did not build it magnificently nor with great art, but he gave it the form of a grotto wishing it to be like the church which the glorious Saint-Michel had dug himself in the rock of Mont-Gargan, and desiring to intimate by these means that God does not ask for splendour and magnificence in visible temples but from our hearts which are the temples of the Holy Spirit... After the consecration of the chapel on the sixteenth of October 709, Saint-Aubert founded the Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel by establishing a college of twelve clerks or canons to celebrate divine service... Book excerpt: The authors of Castrum to Castle trace the “evolution of defensive architecture at the turn of the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance.” —Old Barbed Wire Blog Across western Europe, the long tradition of castle-building took on its most sophisticated form in the later Medieval period and then, in response to the development of gunpowder weapons, it underwent a fundamental change—from castle to fortress. This, the second volume of a highly illustrated new study of medieval fortification, gives a fascinating insight into the last great age of castles and the centuries of violence and conflict they were part of. It traces the advances made between the twelfth and the fifteenth centuries, looking in particular at the form these fortifications took in contexts as different as Italy, Wales, France and the Iberian Peninsula. Many would regard this period in the history of castles as the classic age. It was followed by a phase of relative decline as the conditions of warfare changed and castles had to be adapted to cope with cannon. The conventional castle gave way to new styles of fortification. But, as the authors demonstrate, they were still essential factors in military calculations and campaigns—they were of direct strategic and tactical importance wherever there was an attempt to take or hold territory. “A fascinating treatise on the way such buildings were modified to provide protection from growing threats.” —Books Monthly

Book Mont Saint Michel A World Heritage Site

Download or read book Mont Saint Michel A World Heritage Site written by Jérôme Sabatier and published by Jérôme Sabatier. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel guide updated in February 2019. The Mont-Saint-Michel stands on a rocky mount in the middle of stretches of sand and water that make up the immense bay. Not really on the continent, not really at sea, between the world of men and the wild vastness of the ocean. Between heaven and earth, its imposing figure seems to rise to the heavens. The lights, which change from morning to night, and the atmosphere, at times mystical in the sea mist, enhance these impressions, along with the breathtaking vision upon arrival at the site. For the full effect, travel to Mont Saint Michel on foot from the mainland, as did hundreds of thousands of pilgrims for centuries, and you will understand the magic that surrounds this place. Victor Hugo summed up the feeling in 1884 : "Mont-Saint-Michel is to France what the Great Pyramid is to Egypt." Here you’ll find all the information necessary to prepare your trip and your stay in Mont Saint Michel in order to discover this exceptional site of indisputable universal value. You will find the following under the sections for the site : the reasons for its selection for the World Heritage list, the history of the site, many practical informations (Tourist Offices, suggested tours, museums, events, transports), and a selection of accommodation and restaurants. Informations, prices and opening hours shown are for 2019. But most importantly, this "Mont Saint Michel, A World Heritage Site" travel guide also offers a suggested itinerary for visiting each site and monument. You'll also find tips (transport, pricing, activities ... ), anecdotes and all the possibilities for family-friendly visits to encourage children and families in their discovery. Let us guide you...

Book Mont Saint Michel and Chartres

Download or read book Mont Saint Michel and Chartres written by Henry Adams and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1986-06-03 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mont Saint Michel and Chartres is a record not of a literal jouney but of a meditative journey across time and space into the medieval imagination. Using the architecture, sculpture, and stained glass of the two locales as a starting point, Adams breathes life into what others might see merely as monuments of a past civilization. With daring and inventive conceits, Adams looks at the ordinary people, places, and events in the context of the social conventions and systems of thought and belief of the thirteenth century turning the study of history into a kind of theater. As Raymond Carney discusses in his introduction, Adams' freeedom from the European traditions of study lends an exuberance—and puckish wit—to his writings. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
