Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Geology It will be readily understood by the reader, from the very title of the work, that this does not claim to be a systematic survey like those of Europe, based on accurate maps, but is rather a geological reconnaissance in an unknown and often unexplored region, where geology and topography had to go hand in hand, and that therefore, while details were often, from the necessities of the case, somewhat neglected, it was the general bearing of the leading geological facts that was most constantly in our minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Text-Book of Geology: Descriptive and Industrial Yet another word: The Author requests his brother geo legists who may glance over these pages to remember that they are not intended to contain an exposition of his own peculiar views, but rather to exhibit an elementary outline of the science as now established by the leading workers in Britain, France, Germany, and America. The main object has been to render the student such assistance as will enable him to proceed in the field as a practical observer, and to read with appreciation the higher treatises, special mono graphs, papers, and new discoveries of others. To further this object mention is made, at the end of each section, of the principal works devoted to the department in question to have done more would have been to enter on the field of speculative geology - a subject that lies beyond the scope of an Educational Text-book. As assist ant in the geological survey of Vermont, a large part of the last three years has been devoted by him to the study of the rocks in the mountains, and in writing out their de scriptions. Should it happen, as most likely it will, that this is the last revision of the work I shall ever make, and he should survive me, I trust he will be found fully com petent to keep the work up to the advancing state of the science, should the public call for its continued publication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Geology of Vermont, Vol. 1 of 2: Descriptive, Theoretical, Economical, and Scenographical It is not mere hypothesis, but legitimate theory, which leads geologists with almost no exception, to the belief that the interior of the earth is now in a molten state, and that at an early date it was entirely melted. But being placed as the earth is, in a medium (the planetary spaces) from 50° to 75° below zero, a crust must have formed over the molten surface, which has been growing thicker up to the present time. This envelope is called the crust of the earth. Geological facts would lead to the conclusion that it cannot be more than a hundred miles thick; but some astronomical reasoning, which we regard as less satisfactory, increases the thickness to six hundred miles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology Hence, geology is largely dependent on other sciences for its advance: it depends on the help of chemist, physicist, geographer, zoologist, botanist, and astronomer. The geologist applies their several discoveries to the elucidation Of his own problem - the examination of the sub stance, structure, and history of the earth. His work is therefore varied, and the mastery of any one branch Of geology requires a knowledge of the various sciences connected with that branch. Hence geologists usually find themselves obliged to confine their activity to some one branch of geology; but their efforts in a Special direction will only yield the fullest results when based upon an understanding Of geology as a whole. Book Advanced Text Book of Geology

Download or read book Advanced Text Book of Geology written by David Page and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Text-Book of Geology: Descriptive and Industrial This Treatise, while intended as a sequel to the Author's "Introductory Text-Book," has been prepared throughout as a separate and independent work. The purpose of these Text-Books is briefly this: The Introductory is meant to exhibit an outline of Geology intelligible to beginners, and sufficient for those who wish to become acquainted merely with the leading facts of the science; the Advanced, on the other hand, presents the subject in detail, and is intended for senior pupils and those who desire to prosecute the study in its principles as well as deductions. Though thus prepared on the same plan, and the one but an extension and development of the other, they are both independent elementary works, and may be taken separately or in sequence, according to the progress and purpose of the student. This much may be said, that he who has mastered the Introductory will have nothing to unlearn when he comes to study the Advanced, while his acquisition of the science will have been rendered much more easy and agreeable. The Author has a strong conviction on this point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Student s Handbook of Stratigraphical Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Student s Handbook of Stratigraphical Geology Classic Reprint written by A. J. Jukes-Browne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Handbook of Stratigraphical Geology Scope of the Subject - In most manuals of Geology this branch of the subject is called Stratigraphical Geology because it chiefly consists in the description of the great stratified series of rocks which make up the mass of the earth's crust. It is some times called Historical Geology, because it should comprise not only a description of the various rocks which were formed during each period of the world's history, but also some account of the forms of life which are entombed in these rocks, with a sketch of the physical geography of the earth during each period, and a notice of the changes in the relative position of land and sea which took place from time to time all this should be made as complete as the imperfection of the geological documents will allow. Neither designation is quite satisfactory, but either of them may be used so long as it is understood to mean a geological history - a collation of the knowledge acquired in all the other depart ments of the Science, and its application to elucidate the history of the earth, or of a portion of the earth, from the earliest time of which any records exist down to the time of human history. At present there are only a few limited areas of the earth's surface about which we have anything like a full stratigraphical knowledge, and much remains to be learnt even in the areas about which we know most. Geological History, therefore, is yet in its infancy; but enough is now known of the stratigraphical geology of Europe to make it possible to give an outline of its geological history, and American geologists are rapidly making it possible to do the same for North America. In this volume, however, we shall not travel beyond the limits of the British Islands, except where our own records are deficient, or where some knowledge of continental geology is necessary to the proper understanding of the changes that took place in Britain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Victoria: A Descriptive Catalogue of the Specimens in the Industrial and Technological Museum (Melbourne), Illustrating the Rock System of Victoria The descriptive catalogue of the specimens in the Industrial and Technological Museum, which now appears, originally formed part of the Report of the Museum, presented to Parliament in 1874. It is reprinted, with a view of making it more generally useful to the public. The collection of rocks native to Victoria which the catalogue describes, affords a very good opportunity of studying the rock systems of the country. The greatest care has been observed with reference to the locality of each specimen, and a great number have been placed aside as comparatively useless, because their identity with a particular district could not, with certainty, be stated. In the catalogue will be found explanatory notes on the character of the various specimens, their modes of occurrence and affinities, rendering the collection still more useful, and the catalogue not merely a hand-book to this collection, but a guide that can be used with great advantage in the formation of other collections throughout the country. The foreign rocks and minerals, carefully classified in the Museum, also afford an opportunity of comparison with those of Victoria, which must be interesting and valuable to all who are engaged in geological research. In his original report to the Trustees, Mr. Ulrich states that the nomenclature, system, and basis of classification adopted are according to the most approved recent views on Lithology by Dr. Zirkel, of Leipzig, Dr. Senft, von Gotta, and other authorities on the subject, though following mainly those given by Dr. Zirkel in his work on Petrography. As all the collections of rock specimens in the Museum have been arranged according to this system, the identical species and varieties of rocks of these collections can easily be compared. The geological notes introductory to the several main divisions and groups of rocks, are partly from Mr. Ulrich's own observations in the field, and partly extracts from the reports of Mr. A. R. C. Selwyn, the Director of the former Geological Survey of Victoria. The numbers of this catalogue agree with those on the descriptive labels attached to the specimens. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Preliminary Descriptive Catalogue of the Systematic Collections in Economic Geology and Metallurgy: In the United States National Museum This work (Bulletin No. 42) is one of a series of papers intended to illustrate the collections belonging to the United States, and constituting the National Museum, of which the Smithsonian Institution was placed in charge by the act of Congress of August 10, 1846. The publications of the National Museum consist of two series - the Bulletins, of which this is No 42, in continuous series, and the Proceedings, of which the fourteenth volume is now in press. A small edition of each paper in the Proceedings is distributed in pamphlet form to specialists in advance of the publication of the bound volume. The Bulletins of the National Museum, the publication of which was commenced in 1875, consist of elaborate papers based upon the collections of the Museum, reports of expeditions, etc., while the Proceedings facilitate the prompt publication of freshly-acquired facts relating to biology, anthropology, and geology, descriptions of restricted groups of animals and plants, the discussion of particular questions relative to the synonymy of species, and the diaries of minor expeditions. Other papers, of more general popular interest, are printed in the Appendix to the Annual Report. Full lists of the publications of the Museum may be found in the current catalogues of the publications of the Smithsonian Institution. Papers intended for publication in the Proceedings and Bulletins of the National Museum are referred to the Committee on Publications, composed as follows: T. H. Bean, A. Howard Clark (editor), R. E.
