Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive Catalogue of Historical Novels and Tales: For the Use of School Libraries and Teachers of History MY object, in drawing up the following list of Historical Novels, has been two-fold. In the first place, I hope that it may serve as a useful catalogue for those who have the charge of School Libraries. In the second place, I have tried to provide what seems to me a valuable aid to the School Teacher of History. I am sure - I speak from experience - that he or She will find the History-work of the school considerably freshened and enlivened, if, when treating any period, care be taken that the pupils shall know what are the best novels which relate to that period, and be encouraged to read them. The little harm which the fancy and invention of the writer may do will be amply compensated for by the ektra brightness of interest which is sure to be gained. Moreover, to paraphrase the words of Jean Paul, it is not the intention of so Sportive an instruction as this to absolve the pupil from the necessity for real exertion; but rather it is hoped that thereby a passion may be awakened in him, which shall not only facilitate, but Shall even necessitate, the strongest exertion on his part. It has not been always easy to decide whether a book shall be admitted as an Historical Novel or not. There is an immense variety of tales and romances, ranging from mere sketches of domestic life at certain periods, such as Miss Austen's works. Book excerpt: These Historical Novels have taught all men this truth, which looks like a truism, and yet was as good as unkwon to writers of history and others, till so taught: that the bygone ages of the world were actually filled by living men, not by protocols, state-papers, controversies, and abstractions of men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Best Historical Novels and Tales Four years ago (vide Dr. Baker's kindly allusion in the Preface to his admirable work just named), it was hinted that the Guide was somewhat lacking in its degree of com prehensiveness such a criticism could scarcely be maintained now. If there is still exclusion to some extent, there is (fourth edition) inclusion to a very much larger extent. I have allowed the utmost elasticity in my later decisions as to his torical qualification. How comprehensive has been my selection, may be judged from the fact that, while in my enlarged third edition the annotated lists covered between twelve and thirteen hundred novels and tales, I have now passed under review about seventeen hundred more. In the total of nearly three thousand novels and tales thus reached, over two thousand are not to be found in Mr. Bowen's catalogue, and some thirteen hundred are absent from Dr. Baker's lists. Comprehensiveness alone, however, would be a poor advantage, and I believe that, in its present form, besides being the largest bibliography of its kind, the Guide is also the most accurate. And this brings me to say a few words about certain special aims that I have striven my utmost to embody in the large supplementary portion of this edition. More and more, I have come to see that, in a reference book of the kind making its appeal to readers of all ages and of varying tastes - there should be large catholicity. And nowhere is such inclusiveness more desirable than in the case of juvenile stories: the shortest and simplest tale, if it in any way illustrates a bygone period, may prove of use and of interest. Book A Descriptive List of Novels and Tales Dealing With American City Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Descriptive List of Novels and Tales Dealing With American City Life Classic Reprint written by William McCrillis Griswold and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive List of Novels and Tales Dealing With American City Life The object of this list is to direct readers, such as would enjoy the kind of hooks here described, to a number of novels, easily obtainable, but which, in many cases, have been forgotten within a year or two after publication. That the existence of works of fiction is remembered so short a time is a pity, since, for every new book of merit, there are, in most libraries, a hundred as good or better, unknown to the majority of readers. It is hoped that the publication of this and similar lists will lessen, in some measure, the disposition to read an inferior new book when superior old books, equally fresh to most readers, are at hand. This list will be followed by others describing International, Romantic, Eccentric and Fanciful novels and tales. The compiler would be pleased to have his attention called to any works deserving a place which have escaped his attention. It may be observed that the compiler has tried to include only such works as are well-written, interesting, and free from sensationalism, sentimentality, and pretense. But in a few cases, books have been noticed on account of the reputation of their authors, or their great popularity, rather than their merit. The selected "notices" here given are generally abridged. Abraham Page, Esq. [by J: Saunders Holt: Lippincott, 1869.] "To read them is to get much the same kind of pleasure that one finds iu listening to the talk of a shrewd, sensible old man, such as one occasionally meets in out-of-the-way country places, who, having spent all his days in one spot, has been colored by his surroundings to the very marrow, and whose judgments on men and things, if they have the defect of being provincial and narrow, have also the virtue of resulting fairly from his own observations. . . But usually he confines himself closely to the matter he has in hand. That matter is description of life and manners in the little Southern village where he was born, and where he lived all his days in the comfortable assurance that life had nothing better or pleasanter to offer than what could be found within its limits. Contentment is certainly a virtue, and it is hard to say who could practise it with greater hopes of success than a man situated as "Mr. Page" describes himself to have been, who felt the pleasant conviction that to be a gentleman was the chief end of man, and that only a Southerner, the owner of slaves, could ever hope to attain it. Under such circumstances, a cheerful serenity and a calm confidence in surveying and analyzing the meaner works of God' s hand could hardly fail to be engendered in any bosom. Such was the result, at all events, in "Mr. Page's" case; and, considering the 2 unaffectedly pleasant books which, but for this satisfaction with himself and this thoro persuasion of the soundness of all his positions, would certainly have been less peculiarly pleasant, we find in ourselves not the least disposition to quarrel with it.
