Book Computations and Computing Devices in Mathematics Education Before the Advent of Electronic Calculators

Download or read book Computations and Computing Devices in Mathematics Education Before the Advent of Electronic Calculators written by Alexei Volkov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume traces back the history of interaction between the “computational” or “algorithmic” aspects of elementary mathematics and mathematics education throughout ages. More specifically, the examples of mathematical practices analyzed by the historians of mathematics and mathematics education who authored the chapters in the present collection show that the development (and, in some cases, decline) of counting devices and related computational practices needs to be considered within a particular context to which they arguably belonged, namely, the context of mathematics instruction; in their contributions the authors also explore the role that the instruments played in formation of didactical approaches in various mathematical traditions, stretching from Ancient Mesopotamia to the 20th century Europe and North America.

Book Before the Computer

Download or read book Before the Computer written by James W. Cortada and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Computer fully explores the data processing industry in the United States from its nineteenth-century inception down to the period when the computer became its primary tool. As James Cortada describes what was once called the "office appliance industry," he challenges our view of the digital computer as a revolutionary technology. Cortada interprets reliance on computers as a development within an important segment of the American economy that was earlier represented largely by such instruments as typewriters, tabulating machines, adding machines, and calculators. He also describes how many of the practices of the office appliance industry evolved into those of the computer world. Drawing on previously unavailable industry archives, the author adds to our understanding of IBM's early history and offers short corporate histories of firms that include NCR, Burroughs, and Remington Rand. Focusing on the United States but also including comparative material on Europe and Asia, Before the Computer will be a unique source of knowledge about the companies that built office equipment and their enormous impact on economic life. The book explains which forms of technology can be used to improve mathematics teaching and learning, how to get started and where to go for further information. The first two chapters provide a useful introduction for those new to teaching mathematics with ICT. Further chapters cover topics including: ICT and the curriculum: number, algebra, geometry and statistics Making use of interactive whiteboards in the classroom Using the internet and video-conferencing to enhance teaching The book includes practical classroom scenarios and case studies (for example, the government-funded MathsAlive! Initiative), as well as discussions of general issues, such as the role of feedback and the use of ICT in whole-class teaching. It draws on current research and is supplemented by a linked web site, which provides access to demonstration copies of software and sample files. It also includes a directory of resources with lists of organisations, web sites, projects and further reading. Book Engines of the Imagination

Download or read book Engines of the Imagination written by Jonathan Sawday and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At what point did machines and technology begin to have an impact on the cultural consciousness and imagination of Europe? How was this reflected through the art and literature of the time? Was technology a sign of the fall of humanity from its original state of innocence or a sign of human progress and mastery over the natural world? In his characteristically lucid and captivating style, Jonathan Sawday investigates these questions and more by engaging with the poetry, philosophy, art, and engineering of the period to find the lost world of the machine in the pre-industrial culture of the European Renaissance. The aesthetic and intellectual dimension of these machines appealed to familiar figures such as Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, Montaigne, and Leonardo da Vinci as well as to a host of lesser known writers and artists in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This intellectual engagement with machines in the European Renaissance gave rise to new attitudes towards gender, work and labour, and even fostered the new sciences of artificial life and reason which would be pursued by figures such as Descartes, Hobbes, and Leibniz in the seventeenth century. Writers, philosophers and artists had mixed and often conflicting reactions to technology, reflecting a paradoxical attitude between modern progress and traditional values. Underpinning the enthusiastic creation of a machine-driven world, then, were stories of loss and catastrophe. These contradictory attitudes are part of the legacy of the European Renaissance, just as much as the plays of Shakespeare or the poetry of John Milton. And this historical legacy helps to explain many of our own attitudes towards the technology that surrounds us, sustains us, and sometimes perplexes us in the modern world.
