Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Description of Industry, an Introduction to Economics This book undertakes to describe the business world, and to explain the rules and principles that control men as citizens in that world. The badge of citizenship in the business world is work. Everyone who lives must live from work, for there is no other way of producing those things that support life or that contribute to the comforts and pleasures of living. While work may not be, and should not be, the chief end of living, it is the chief occupation in life. It is for this reason that a study of the natures of work, of the conditions under which men work, and of the rules and principles according to which efficient work may be done, is a highly important study. To understand the business world is a significant part of education. 1. The Nature of Work. - The nature of work will be adequately presented by considering four points respecting it. (a) Its Definition. - That work is bound up with energy and effort is the common experience of all; but not all effort and energy is work. Work is a means to an end; it is not an end in itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social and Industrial Problem: A Brief Introduction to the Study of Social Economics Hopelessness is perhaps of all things the most destructive of the qualities of energy, co-operation and imagination on which the progress Of the race so greatly depends; and it is diflicult to appreciate to the full the immensity Of the task undertaken by those early trade unionists whose Object was to give coherence and a common purpose to the amorphous mass Of labour, and to weld these countless human grains into a material fit for the construction Of a stable and prosperous industrial society. The seed which was sown under such discouraging conditions has borne ample fruit. At the present time there are in this country alone about six million organized workers associated in a large number Of trade unions, which themselves are developing an increasing tendency to unified action in the industrial field. Book An Introduction to the Industrial and Social History of England Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Industrial and Social History of England This text-book is intended for college and high-school classes. Most of the facts stated in it have become, through the researches and publications of recent years, such commonplace knowledge that a reference to authority in each case has not seemed meces sary. Statements on more doubtful points, and such personal opinions as I have had occasion to express, although not sup ported by references, are based on a somewhat careful study of the sources. To each chapter is subjoined a bibliographical paragraph with the titles of the most important secondary authorities. These works will furnish a fuller account of the matters that have been treated in outline in this book, indicate the original sources, and give opportunity and suggestions for further study. An introductory chapter and a series of narra tive paragraphs prefixed to other chapters are given with the object of correlating matters of economic and social history with other aspects of the life of the nation. My obligation and gratitude are due, as are those of all later students', to the group of scholars who have within our own time laid the foundations of the study of economic history, and whose names and books will be found referred to in the bibliographical paragraphs. Book Industry Emotion and Unrest Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industry Emotion and Unrest Classic Reprint written by Edward Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industry, Emotion and Unrest This book endeavors to set forth the factors which most profoundly affect the industrial and social sides of modern economic life, and concludes with some suggestions for controlling them. The fac tors are portrayed by incidents, somewhat as is the law in the case system of instruction in law schools, thus avoiding dogmatic premises deduced from small collections of imperfectly classified facts. While the picture thus presented has been kept in harmony with economics and sociology, these sciences have been kept in the background, for they may be misleading, since economists and sociologists have not yet collected data or evolved methods as satisfactory as those of the chemists, physicists and students of the other exact sciences. Book Industry in England

Download or read book Industry in England written by H. De B. Gibbins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industry in England: Historical Outlines IN 1890 the author published a small book, entitled The Industrial History of England, which met with a some what undeserved success, and has rapidly gone through several large editions. It was described in the first preface as an attempt to relate in a short, concise, and simple form the main outlines of England's economic and industrial history, meant to serve as an introduction to a fuller study of the subject, and as a preliminary sketch which the reader can afterwards, if he wishes, fill in for himself from larger volumes; and it seems to have attained its object of awakening popular interest, to some extent, in a very important branch of national history. But it had all the faults of a brief outline, and contained errors of fact and of expression which no one has regretted more sincerely than the author. It has therefore been my endeavour, in this larger work, to produce a History of Industry of a more satisfactory character, while at the same time retaining the essential features that characterised the earlier effort. As before, I have attempted, as far as possible, in the brief limits of a work like this, to connect economie and ind ustrial questions with social, political, and military movements, since only in some such mutual relation can historical events obtain their full significance. Book An Introduction to English Industrial History Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to English Industrial History Classic Reprint written by Henry Allsopp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to English Industrial History This book is an attempt to make a really interesting, simple and suggestive introduction to industrial and economic history. It is intended mainly to stimulate our young men and women of all classes to take up earnestly the study of this important subject, which has hitherto been beyond the reach of most young people because the only available text-books have been either out-of-date or far too learned and academic, as well as too expensive. The author's difficulty has been to know what to omit, but every effort has been made to include only the essential features and to present those in such a form as will tempt students to read the larger and more advanced books on the subject. A descriptive list of the most interesting books on the various portions of the subject will be found in the appendix. The sketch of a manor is, it is hoped, simple without being misleading. The two population maps are intended to illustrate clearly the growth of population in the eighteenth century. Thanks are due to Mr. J. Munro, M.A. (Beit Lecturer in Colonial History at the University of Oxford), and to my wife, to whom the author owes many suggestions and kind criticisms; and to Messrs. A. L. Smith, M.A., and H. W. C. Davis, M.A. (both of Balliol College, Oxford), who have, by their teaching, made this book possible, but are, of course, not responsible for any of the statements made. Book An Economic Study of the Information Technology Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Economic Study of the Information Technology Revolution Classic Reprint written by Charles Jonscher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Economic Study of the Information Technology Revolution Integration. As the automated office functions and automated physical production systems within firms become integrated and networked, there is a reversal in the trend to separate out the information management tasks from the remainder of the economy. Information systems link customers to suppliers and offices to factories. In the consequent reintegration of economic activity, information technology plays a more central role in the strategy of businesses and the performance of the economy. It is a popular conception that the primary driving force behind this information revolution has been progress in microelectronic technology, and more particularly in the development of integrated circuits or chips. On this view, the reason why computing power which used to fill a room and cost now stands on a desk and costs $5000, or why pocket calculators which used to cost $1000 now cost $10, is that society happens to have benefitted from a series of spectacularly successful inventions in the field of electronics. As to why the introduction of information technology occurred when it did or took the path that it did why data processing came before word processing, or why computers transformed the office environment before they transformed the factory environment the popular conception is silent. And, since this technology-oriented view of the causes behind the information revolution offers little guidance as to the direction which technological developments have taken thus far, it offers little insight into the direction which they will take in the future. Book The Harmony of Interests Agricultural Manufacturing and Commercial Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Harmony of Interests Agricultural Manufacturing and Commercial Classic Reprint written by Henry Charles Carey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harmony of Interests: Agricultural, Manufacturing, and Commercial was authored by Henry Charles Carey, an important economist and a leader in the American school of developmental capitalism. Born in Philadelphia, Carey would go on to become the chief economic advisor to Abraham Lincoln. The Harmony of Interests is Carey's work espousing support for the American system of economics, in contrast to the British System. Carey takes issue with the British system and the hands-off approach of the central government in economic issues. While most definitely a capitalist, Carey believes the government should play a more significant role in regulating and stimulating the economy, primarily through intervention in infrastructure projects, the support of a national bank, and the protection of domestic industry through high tariffs and subsidies to eligible companies. The author outlines his views over a series of chapters that total more than two hundred pages. This book is presented without an introduction or table of contents, but is concluded with a detailed index. Carey was an influential economist, and the system detailed in this work is more or less the economic system followed by the United States through much of the twentieth century. While a highly technical work, the book is not totally beyond reproach for the reader unfamiliar with the inner workings of macroeconomics. Carey's writing is clear and easily digestible. The Harmony of Interests: Agricultural, Manufacturing, and Commercial was an important work of economics by one of the leaders in the field. Any reader interested in the history of economic policy in the United States and the broader western world will surely find this to be a fascinating read. The world in which we live is an ever changing, restless world; it is not static or at a standstill. Institutions, laws and ways of getting a living are different to-day from those prevailing when George Washington was President; and before the year 2000 is ushered in many further changes will occur. There is progress, or at least change, as the years go by in government, in moral ideals and in methods employed in industry. Constant change is the law of life, in institu tions as well as in animals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Industrial Day Dreams

Download or read book Industrial Day Dreams written by Samuel Edward Keeble and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Day-Dreams: Studies in Industrial Ethics and Economics No one has a deeper sense of the inadequacy of the present book as even a slight contribution to the direct solution of vexed social problems, than has the author. His only hope is that it may have some little indirect influence in stirring up those who have more ability and knowledge than he has, but who perhaps have not devoted much time to the considera tion of social questions. The appeal here made is to those whose interests are mainly religious. In many religious circles still there seems to be hardly any idea of the intimate connexion existing between religion and the industrial life of society. Much of the prevailing apathy and indifference would vanish at once if it were realized that their circles intersect. Earnest workers in the religious sphere are often so fully occupied that they lack the most elementary knowledge of the true nature of the problems involved or of the remedies suggested. It is hoped that some such workers will find here an introduction - for this is all it can offer - to the general subject of industrial ethics and economics. It is urgently necessary that the Christian Church as a whole should address herself to the social problem. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Agricultural Economics But while the farmer may be more directly dependent upon Nature than are those engaged in the industries of the city, he is by no means inde pendent of his fellow men. The pioneer farmer who looked primarily to the satisfaction of the wants of his own household may have selected the crops which he cultivated, without giving any thought to the needs of other men; but the modern agriculturist, who produces primarily for the market, and procures upon the market a large share of the necessaries, conveniences, and luxuries of life, is bound to take into account the demands of his fellow beings. The modern farmer must consider the price for which the produce can be sold as well as the conditions of production, if he would manage his farm successfully.
