The author outlines his views over a series of chapters that total more than two hundred pages. This book is presented without an introduction or table of contents, but is concluded with a detailed index. Carey was an influential economist, and the system detailed in this work is more or less the economic system followed by the United States through much of the twentieth century. While a highly technical work, the book is not totally beyond reproach for the reader unfamiliar with the inner workings of macroeconomics. Carey's writing is clear and easily digestible. The Harmony of Interests: Agricultural, Manufacturing, and Commercial was an important work of economics by one of the leaders in the field. Any reader interested in the history of economic policy in the United States and the broader western world will surely find this to be a fascinating read.
