Book Mutiny on the Globe The Fatal Voyage of Samuel Comstock

Download or read book Mutiny on the Globe The Fatal Voyage of Samuel Comstock written by Thomas Farel Heffernan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2002-06-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bloody mutiny on a whaling journey, followed by an incredible tale of survival on land and sea. Samuel Comstock knew he was born to do some great thing, but his only legacy was a reign of terror. Two years out of Nantucket on a whaling voyage in 1824, he organized a mutiny and murdered the officers of the Globe. It was a premeditated act; in his sea chest Comstock carried the seeds, tools, and weapons with which he would found his own island kingdom. He had often described these plans to one of his brothers, William. But the chief witness and chronicler of the mutiny was young George Comstock, who neither participated in nor approved of his brother's savage deed. Within days of settling on Mili Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Comstock was murdered by his fellow mutineers. Six innocent seamen—George among them—seized the Globe and escaped; most of the rest were killed by natives. Two survivors lived for twenty-two months, half-prisoners and half-adoptees of the natives, until they were rescued in a bold and dangerous maneuver by a landing party from the U.S. schooner Dolphin. The Globe's story is one of terror, adventure, endurance, and luck. It is also the story of one of the most bizarre and frightening minds that ever went to sea.

Book The Captain The Missionary and the Bell The Wreck of the Steamship Atlantic

Download or read book The Captain The Missionary and the Bell The Wreck of the Steamship Atlantic written by Eric Larsson and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Captain: Isaac "Kip" Dustan, a well-respected mariner whose adventures were frequently recounted in the mid-1800s New York newspapers... The Missionary: Rev. Benjamin C.C. Parker of the Young Men's Church Missionary Society of the City of New York... The Bell from the Atlantic: Contains a history that spans more than one and a half centuries... On Wednesday, November 25, 1846, the steamer Atlantic left Allyn Point headed for New London, Connecticut. Less than an hour later, a steam pipe exploded, disabling the engine and leaving the Atlantic at the mercy of the winds and seas as it dragged anchor across a tempestuous Long Island Sound towards a rocky reef off Fishers Island. This true story follows the events of the twenty-seven hours following the explosion as well as the harrowing stories of many of the passengers that sailed aboard the Atlantic that fateful night. So much of life is about connections, seemingly chance meetings, lives intersecting with others, and encounters that could be luck, fate, coincidence, or faith. The wreck of the steamship Atlantic links the captain of that ill-fated ship to the missionary of the Young Men's Church Missionary Society of the City of New York and the bell from that ship, creating ripples that are still felt today.

Book Peter Strickland

Download or read book Peter Strickland written by Stephen H. Grant and published by New Acdemia+ORM. This book was released on 2006-12-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of this nineteenth-century sea captain, adventurer, and State Department official: “A vivid picture of [a] unique career.” —The Day (New London, CT) This is the first biography of Capt. Peter Strickland, a little-known Connecticut Yankee who crossed the Atlantic one hundred times in command of a sailing vessel, traded with French and Portuguese colonies during the period 1864-1905, and served as the first American consul to French West Africa for over twenty years. We know about Peter Strickland’s long life because he wrote a daily journal from the age of nineteen until the year he died. He broke away from a long line of farmers to adopt a seafaring life at age fifteen, and his merchant marine career led him from the east coast of the United States to the west coast of Africa. He introduced American tobacco and wood products into French and Portuguese colonies, and on the return trips carried animal hides and peanuts in his 100-ton schooners. Eventually, the U.S. State Department asked him to become the first consul in French West Africa, with residence in Senegal. The captain accepted the terms: He would receive no salary, but he could keep the port fees he collected and continue to practice his import-export business. This book tells his life story, from his accomplishments and adventures to coping with the epidemics of the day and a tragic personal loss—in the process capturing a unique era in American diplomatic history. “Grant’s careful blending of historical hindsight with Strickland’s own words brings enormous value to our understanding of U.S. diplomacy.” —Foreign Service Journal

Book Assembling the Architect

Download or read book Assembling the Architect written by George Barnett Johnston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assembling the Architect explores the origins and history of architectural practice. It unravels the competing interests that historically have structured the field and cultivates a deeper understanding of the contemporary profession. Focusing on the period 1870 to 1920 when the foundations were being laid for the U.S. architectural profession that we recognize today, this study traces the formation and standardization of the fundamental relationships among architects, owners, and builders, as codified in the American Institute of Architects' very first Handbook of Architectural Practice. It reveals how these archetypal roles have always been fluid, each successfully redefining their own agency with respect to the others in the constantly-shifting political economy of building. Far from being a purely historical study, the book also sheds light on today's digitally-enabled profession. Contemporary architectural tools and disciplinary ideals continue to be shaped by the same fundamental tensions, and emergent modes of practice such as BIM (Building Information Modelling) and IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) represent the realization of programs and agendas that have been over a century in play. Essential reading for professional practice courses as a contextual and historical companion to the Handbook, Assembling the Architect provides a critical perspective of the profession that is fundamental to understanding current architectural practice.
