Book excerpt: Henry Tuthill was baptized 28 June 1612 in Tharston, Norfolk County, England. He came to America prior to 1637 at which time he had a lot in Hingham, Massachusetts. In 1644 he sold his lot and went to Southold, Long Island where his brother, John, had located. John Tuthill returned to England and died there. Henry stayed on Long Island and his descendants lived there until the American Revolution when they began, slowly to disperse to all parts of the nation and a few went to Canada. Some of them spelled their name as Tuttle.

Book excerpt: Henry Tuthill (b.1612) and his wife, Bridget, emigrated in 1637 from England to Hingham, Massachusetts, and moved in 1644 to Southold, Long Island, New York. He died during or before 1650. The seventh generation (born just after the Revolutionary War) began spelling the surname as Tuttle. One of this seventh generation was Terry Tuttle (1790-1826), who married Ellen or Eleanor Mills in 1817. After his death, Ellen moved from New York to St. Louis, Missouri with three sons and a daughter. They all became Mormon converts, moved to Illinois, and then moved west with the Mormon migration. One son was with the Mormon Battalion, and later was mayor of Manti, Utah. The other two sons also settled in Manti. Descendants and relatives lived in Utah, California, New Mexico and elsewhere. The earliest specific Tuthill ancestor in England died in 1558.
