Book The Power of Disturbance

Download or read book The Power of Disturbance written by Manuele Gragnolati and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aracoeli (1982) was the last novel written by Elsa Morante (1912-85), one of the most significant Italian writers of the twentieth century. The journey, both geographical and memorial, of a homosexual son in search of his dead mother is a first-person narrative that has puzzled many critics for its darkness and despair. By combining scholars from different disciplines and cultural traditions, this volume re-evaluates the esthetical and theoretical complexity of Morante's novel and argues that it engages with crucial philosophical and epistemological questions in an original and profound way. Contributors explore the manifold tensions staged by the novel in connection with contemporary philosophical discourse (from feminist/queer to political theory to psycho-analysis) and authors (such as Emilio Gadda, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Pedro Almodovar). The Power of Disturbance shows that by creating a 'hallucinatory' representation of the relationship between mother and child, Aracoeli questions the classical distinction between subject and object, and proposes an altogether new and subversive kind of writing.

Book Adhocism expanded and updated edition

Download or read book Adhocism expanded and updated edition written by Charles Jencks and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The triumphant return of a book that gave us permission to throw out the rulebook, in activities ranging from play to architecture to revolution. When this book first appeared in 1972, it was part of the spirit that would define a new architecture and design era—a new way of thinking ready to move beyond the purist doctrines and formal models of modernism. Charles Jencks and Nathan Silver's book was a manifesto for a generation that took pleasure in doing things ad hoc, using materials at hand to solve real-world problems. The implications were subversive. Turned-off citizens of the 1970s immediately adopted the book as a DIY guide. The word “adhocism” entered the vocabulary, the concept of adhocism became part of the designer's toolkit, and Adhocism became a cult classic. Now Adhocism is available again, with new texts by Jencks and Silver reflecting on the past forty years of adhocism and new illustrations demonstrating adhocism's continuing relevance. Adhocism has always been around. (Think Robinson Crusoe, making a raft and then a shelter from the wreck of his ship.) As a design principle, adhocism starts with everyday improvisations: a bottle as a candleholder, a dictionary as a doorstop, a tractor seat on wheels as a dining room chair. But it is also an undeveloped force within the way we approach almost every activity, from play to architecture to city planning to political revolution. Engagingly written, filled with pictures and examples from areas as diverse as auto mechanics and biology, Adhocism urges us to pay less attention to the rulebook and more to the real principle of how we actually do things. It declares that problems are not necessarily solved in a genius's “eureka!” moment but by trial and error, adjustment and readjustment.

  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The Power of Bad written by John Tierney and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most important book at the borderland of psychology and politics that I have ever read."—Martin E. P. Seligman, Zellerbach Family Professor of Psychology at that University of Pennsylvania and author of Learned Optimism Why are we devastated by a word of criticism even when it’s mixed with lavish praise? Because our brains are wired to focus on the bad. This negativity effect explains things great and small: why countries blunder into disastrous wars, why couples divorce, why people flub job interviews, how schools fail students, why football coaches stupidly punt on fourth down. All day long, the power of bad governs people’s moods, drives marketing campaigns, and dominates news and politics. Eminent social scientist Roy F. Baumeister stumbled unexpectedly upon this fundamental aspect of human nature. To find out why financial losses mattered more to people than financial gains, Baumeister looked for situations in which good events made a bigger impact than bad ones. But his team couldn’t find any. Their research showed that bad is relentlessly stronger than good, and their paper has become one of the most-cited in the scientific literature. Our brain’s negativity bias makes evolutionary sense because it kept our ancestors alert to fatal dangers, but it distorts our perspective in today’s media environment. The steady barrage of bad news and crisismongering makes us feel helpless and leaves us needlessly fearful and angry. We ignore our many blessings, preferring to heed—and vote for—the voices telling us the world is going to hell. But once we recognize our negativity bias, the rational brain can overcome the power of bad when it’s harmful and employ that power when it’s beneficial. In fact, bad breaks and bad feelings create the most powerful incentives to become smarter and stronger. Properly understood, bad can be put to perfectly good use. As noted science journalist John Tierney and Baumeister show in this wide-ranging book, we can adopt proven strategies to avoid the pitfalls that doom relationships, careers, businesses, and nations. Instead of despairing at what’s wrong in your life and in the world, you can see how much is going right—and how to make it still better.

Book Thinking in Time

Download or read book Thinking in Time written by Suzanne Guerlac and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Under the aegis of time Suzanne Guerlac displaces matter, intuition, memory, and vitalism of the early twentieth century into the wake of poststructuralism and the dilemmas of nature and culture here and now. This book is a landmark for anyone working in the currents of philosophy, science, and literature. The force and vision of the work will enthuse and inspire every one of its readers." ―Tom Conley, Harvard University "In recent years, we have grown accustomed to philosophical language that is intensely self-conscious and rhetorically thick, often tragic in tone. It is enlivening to read Bergson, who exerts so little rhetorical pressure while exacting such a substantial effort of thought.... Bergson's texts teach the reader to let go of entrenched intellectual habits and to begin to think differently--to think in time.... Too much and too little have been said about Bergson. Too much, because of the various appropriations of his thought. Too little, because the work itself has not been carefully studied in recent decades."--from Thinking in Time Henri Bergson (1859-1941), whose philosophical works emphasized motion, time, and change, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927. His work remains influential, particularly in the realms of philosophy, cultural studies, and new media studies. In Thinking in Time, Suzanne Guerlac provides readers with the conceptual and contextual tools necessary for informed appreciation of Bergson's work. Guerlac's straightforward philosophical expositions of two Bergson texts, Time and Free Will (1888) and Matter and Memory (1896), focus on the notions of duration and memory--concepts that are central to the philosopher's work. Thinking in Time makes plain that it is well worth learning how to read Bergson effectively: his era and our own share important concerns. Bergson's insistence on the opposition between the automatic and the voluntary and his engagement with the notions of "the living," affect, and embodiment are especially germane to discussions of electronic culture.

Book Change Your Brain and Stop Procrastination

Download or read book Change Your Brain and Stop Procrastination written by John Scott and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-25 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you want to reprogram your brain to be more productive and stop procrastinating? You have come to the right place! If you find it hard to stick to your timelines and always find yourself having to work under pressure because of deadlines due to procrastination, you are not alone! It's just a commonly unavoidable activity, which people just allow to take over their lives. Did you know that about twenty percent of the population admits that they procrastinate often? This lack of immediacy has also influenced the fast-paced environment you're now in. Some people procrastinate because they know technology can aid them in finishing certain things quickly. Instead of doing research for several hours in the library, they can just surf the Internet for half an hour. Procrastination won't and can't just be beaten in one day because it's a habit. You have to remember that the longer you don't procrastinate, the greater the probability is for you to break this unhealthy and unhelpful habit permanently. Procrastination can be defeated with the right mindset and with the will to finish something. If you want to learn how to think critically, you have to realize that we are responsible for our attitudes because the power to decide our perspective, our thoughts, and our mood is in our hands. Having an open mind to other interpretations can help us to identify the exact problem and analyzing it to come up with several possible solutions. Brainstorming is the key to achieve that, because helps you to avoid forming quick conclusions and when you come up with several possible solutions, makes it easier for you to find the ultimate one. Just by doing that you're one step forward in developing knowledge in critical thinking or problem-solving, but, as always, it takes time, practice, and perseverance. An individual is able to achieve anything they set their mind to in life if they are focused and determined. The majority of the times people tend to become distracted with negative thoughts that come from within. These negative thoughts are a manifestation of a lack of self-confidence they have in their credibility or their ideas. This is why it is imperative to first believe in yourself, as doing so can cause great feats to be manifested. It is important to note that this determination is not something that comes easily. If you want to achieve notable success in your life, then it is important to train your brain to focus more on your future objective and goal. As the general theme of this section states, without focus, there is no way one can achieve their goals or aspirations successfully. When one is motivated, they are able to remain focused on the path, regardless of any distractions or obstacles that they encounter. In this book we will discuss the following topics: What is Procrastination? Reasons Why We Procrastinate The Why and How of Breaking Big Projects into Smaller Ones Building a Perfect Time Management Plan Tricks to Get Things Done in Less Time Four Goals for Critical Thinking: Self Direction, Self-Discipline, Self-Monitoring, Self-Correction Hyperfocus Building Healthy Work Habits Improving Your Memory and Cognitive Ability And MANY MORE Your biggest reward for all your efforts is a job well done, a satisfied boss or client, and a proud teacher.
