Book excerpt: This work is the result of a master’s dissertation, but especially of the author’s concern to understand how, in the 21st century, we are still discussing degrading forms of labour without ever having actually freed ourselves from the chains of slavery experienced in centuries past. The state of Tocantins, as one of the Brazilian states that most often supplies slave labour, as well as importing this form of labour, has repercussions both domestically and internationally, which is why the study was justified. The north of Brazil, where the state of Tocantins is located, is a vast region with low levels of education, where many people live below the poverty line and with little state action, making it a favourable environment for workers to be recruited in slavery-like conditions. However, modern slavery has much deeper roots than can be measured and was only formally extinguished by political and economic interests, which contributes to the fact that even today the issue is the subject of worldwide studies and criticism, since the marginalised class of yesteryear has become the modern slaves of today. Unfortunately, history proves that the abolition of slavery was due to British pressure on Brazil to establish a new society: the consumer society. In other words, the new type of society would require products to be commercialised, but above all people to consume them, which justified the end of slavery. However, the end of slavery did not really mean the end of the exploitation of human labour power, because the excluded class of former slaves formed the marginalised class of modern Brazilian society, as they were left at the mercy of a capitalist system that was not inclusive and had no real opportunities for social mobility. Thus, this class of workers defined the future of their generations in which the barriers of social injustice and non-belonging could never be overcome because labour for the former slaves was never an emancipating mechanism, marking secular social injustices that continue to this day. The truth is that freed slaves, especially black, poor and illiterate slaves, started to be chained in other ways, especially those that caused physical and emotional illness, because they had to be subjected to degrading work due to the lack of education, culture and opportunities, making the same slave society of ancient times persist, but in a new guise. The slave of precision, that is, the individual who faces the absence of opportunities to achieve basic survival, becomes the worker in conditions similar to slavery by accepting work in precarious and humiliating conditions for personal and family needs given the demands of the capitalist world, creating a favourable environment for the perpetuation of modern slavery. Therefore, it is against this backdrop that the study of labour in conditions analogous to slavery becomes fundamental so that one day we can actually put an end to this vicious cycle from the perspective of coordinated actions between the various bodies that are responsible at the domestic legal level for combating and eradicating neo-slavery once and for all.

Book excerpt: Answering the question of how to get from A to B, capitalism to post-capitalism, is a task that we "audaciously" need to pursue now. This pamphlet is one among several others, intended to clarify our struggle 1) to bring down capitalism; and 2) to create a path toward eco-socialism. Those of us oppressed by capitalism engage in some peculiar forms of actions and inactions. In our actions, we take part in struggles to improve key problems generated by capitalism without confronting capitalism. In other words, our actions confront effects rather than causes. In addition to our contradictory actions, our inactions involve consent. We consent by not challenging or even trying to change our simple economic behaviors that perpetuate the capitalist economic system. As a result, we ordinary people continue to serve as the main financiers of the capitalist system. Why do oppressed people consent to their oppression? Repression usually is not enough, as Gramsci observed while imprisoned by Italian fascism. "Hegemonic" ideas explain and justify the oppressive circumstances of our lives. Rinky-dink revolution involves actions and inactions that are easy, safe, mundane, unglamorous, and feasible within every person's life. The history of revolutions shows that the activists who bring them about number much fewer than countries' entire populations. The estimate of 7 to 11 million people required to achieve revolutionary transformation in the United States comes from a simple calculation, which may be off, but probably not way off. "We" who struggle against capitalism have become much more diverse and numerous than the protagonists envisioned by Marx and Engels. "They" who fight to preserve capitalism make up a tiny minority of the world's population. Revolutionary strategy requires clarifying what specific characteristics of capitalism are oppressive and have to go, as opposed to what characteristics of social and economic organization are not oppressive and can stay. What post-capitalist society looks like has become much clearer. Rinky-dink revolution includes withholding consent to processes that capitalism needs to maintain itself and grow, plus several creatively constructive and destructive efforts in which millions of people, but still a minority of the population, participate. The transition to post-capitalism is already happening throughout the world in the creative construction of communal organizations that govern themselves and that act to assure the survival and well-being of their participants. Moving beyond the capitalist state, including the welfare state as part of the capitalist state, entails moving beyond the state itself. The solidarity economy first of all finds ways to create cheap, small-scale, cooperative, pleasant, and comfortable housing units that require very little money, with collaborative solutions to exploitative rent, debt, taxes, and insurance. Second, communal organizations solve the food problem through local production and distribution of nutritious food, achieving independence from capitalist agriculture.

Alma mater to presidents, public intellectuals and pundits of all disciplines, Makerere has attracted considerable scholarly and popular attention, both in respect of its prominence and achievements, and well as with regard to its failures and foibles. The proposed book focuses on a particularly understudied aspect of the place of higher education in the African context, i.e. the relationship between a public university of unique historical importance and the contestations over democratization that have taken place both within campus and outside of it. It is built around the late-1980s struggle by the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) for improved living conditions against the backdrop of the early programs of structural adjustment and economic reform that the National Resistance Army/Movement (NRA/M) government adopted soon after taking power in 1986. Although seemingly introverted in focus, in many respects the MUASA action represented the earliest forms of political struggle against a regime of governance that promised a great deal, but disappointingly delivered considerably less. The focus on MUASA provides a critical entry-point to a wider debate about the place of organized democratic action by academics in a post-conflict context where the traditional institutions of political and civil society, i.e. political parties and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have either been severely compromised or discredited, or where they are too weak and inorganic to provide any form of significant counter-juxtaposition to the government in power. By organizing the first strike by academic staff in the sixty-seven (67) year history of the university, for a time MUASA became the focal-point for democratic organizing against a regime that was yet to fully expose its nefarious and anti-democratic colours. Meanwhile, Portugal was suffering the effects of abandonment, war, and famine. Never had the country lost so many people in so little time. Finally, after Napoleon’s fall and over a decade of misery, the Portuguese demanded the return of their king. João sailed back in tears in 1821, and the last chapter of colonial Brazil drew to a close, setting the stage for the strong, independent nation that we know today, changing the New World forever.
