Download or read book Sons et sens written by Anne Violin-Wigent and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sons et sens presents a unique cultural approach to French pronunciation for English-speaking students. Each chapter presents a new cultural topic, such as the French education system, vernacular French, and cooking in the francophone world, in order to enhance students’ pronunciation skills within the context of French and francophone culture. Phonetic explanations and rules throughout the textbook are anchored in recent research on French phonology, reflecting contemporary French as well as elements of nonstandard variation from around the francophone world. The authors' approach derives from current research on second language acquisition and pedagogy as well as contemporary research on French linguistics—especially sociolinguistics. The textbook’s fifteen chapters include a variety of exercises on sound discrimination, rule formulation, phonetic reading and transcriptions, and conversations. The publisher's website (press,georgetown.edu) provides about 200 sound files and several video files that show how sounds are formed with the body. A teacher's edition contains additional materials, including comments and answers keyed to the student text. Perfect for third year students, Sons et sens should appeal to instructors and students of college-level pronunciation and phonetics courses and serve as a valuable reference in a variety of courses where pronunciation is of importance. The book will also interest students with some background in French who want to perfect their pronunciation on their own.
Download or read book Lie With Me written by Philippe Besson and published by Scribner. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I remember the movement of his hips pressing against the pinball machine. This one sentence had me in its grip until the end. Two young men find each other, always fearing that life itself might be the villain standing in their way. A stunning and heart-gripping tale.” —André Aciman, author of Call Me by Your Name A New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice The critically acclaimed, internationally beloved novel by Philippe Besson—“this year’s Call Me By Your Name” (Vulture) with raves in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, Vanity Fair, Vogue, O, The Oprah Magazine, and Out—about an affair between two teenage boys in 1984 France, translated with subtle beauty and haunting lyricism by the iconic and internationally acclaimed actress and writer Molly Ringwald. In this “sexy, pure, and radiant story” (Out), Philippe chances upon a young man outside a hotel in Bordeaux who bears a striking resemblance to his first love. What follows is a look back at the relationship he’s never forgotten, a hidden affair with a boy named Thomas during their last year of high school. Thomas is the son of a farmer; Philippe the son of a school principal. At school, they don’t acknowledge each other. But they steal time to meet in secret, carrying on a passionate, world-altering affair. Despite the intensity of their attraction, from the beginning Thomas knows how it will end: “Because you will leave and we will stay,” he says. Philippe becomes a writer and travels the world, though as this “tender, sensuous novel” (The New York Times Book Review) shows, he never lets go of the relationship that shaped him, and every story he’s ever told. “Beautifully translated by Ringwald” (NPR), this is “Philippe Besson’s book of a lifetime...an elegiac tale of first, hidden love” (The New Yorker).
Download or read book The Ordered Text written by Richard A. Katz and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1985 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the title of the book indicates, it is concerned with the three major groups of Sonnets by Joachim Du Bellay who was, after Pierre de Ronsard, the most important French poet of the Renaissance. The book attempts to demonstrate the underlying structures which create highly unusual patterns and order in these sonnet sequences, which make them virtually unique in the context of Renaissance lyric of western Europe. Unlike most sonnet sequences of the period, Du Bellay's exhibit a highly organized structure which makes them quite different from the looseness of the vast majority of such recueils, be it Petrarch's or Shakespeare's or Ronsard's, to mention but three such works. Such order is quite obvious in his Antiquités, less so in his Olive, quite hidden in the Regrets, the longest and most important of his works. Secondly, the Regrets is a subversive work which has long been misread.
