Book A History of County Derry

Download or read book A History of County Derry written by Seán McMahon and published by Gill. This book was released on 2004 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: County Derry dates from the time of the Plantation of Ulster, when lands to the west of the now extinct county of Coleraine were joined to it to form the modern county. It is bounded conveniently by Lough Foyle to the west, the Sperrin Mountains to the south and the River Bann to the east.Sean McMahon's history starts with a consideration of the county's topography. The hills at the south and centre have tended to cut off the Foyle Basin from the east and cause the gaze of Derry City to turn towards Donegal and the west. Likewise, the east of the county around Coleraine tends to look east towards Antrim, Belfast and Scotland. The east-west division is also marked by a preponderance of Protestant population in the east and Catholic in the west. The earliest discovered settlement in all of Irish history - Mount Sandel on the lower Bann - is in the county. It dates to almost 6,000 B.C.

Download or read book The Siege of Derry 1689 written by Richard Doherty and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Protestant war cry of 'No Surrender!' was first used in 1689 by the Mayor of Londonderry as James II's army laid siege to the city for 105 days, during which half the city's population died. There were many acts of courage, from the heroic death of Captain Browning to the anonymous, apprentice boys who played signal roles in the defence of the city. The book examines how the Jacobites might have achieved success, and the far reaching impact of the siege as a crucial event in the second British civil war. This is a military study of one of the most iconic episodes in Irish history, based on contemporary accounts, official records of the day, and published works on the siege. With an understanding of seventeenth-century warfare, especially siegecraft, the author probes many of the myths that have grown up around the siege and sets it in its proper context. Its ramifications for the consequent history of Ireland cannot be over emphasised.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Ireland: Can Sean and John Live in Peace? explores the reasons for Northern Ireland's so-called "Troubles." In a compelling and detailed narrative, Professor Rasnic addresses the two primary causes of the conflict-religion and politics-and the source of response to the Troubles-the law. While serving as a Fulbright Distinguished Professor of Law at Queen's Belfast, she experienced the moods, hopes, and fears of those who have endured the atrocities. Interspersed with the author's personal interviews with many of the principals in the peace talks and vignettes that recall her childhood and adolescent years growing up in a small Southern town, Northern Ireland provides a clearer understanding of the essence of what has caused-and continues to cause-so much tragedy and grief in this beautiful province.
