Book Derivation of a Fatigue Life Model for Gears

Download or read book Derivation of a Fatigue Life Model for Gears written by John H. Rumbarger and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A load-life model is developed for calculating the fatigue life and reliability of a spur gear mesh. The dynamic capacity of a gear mesh is defined as the tangential load which can be transmitted for one million pinion revolutions with a 90% probability of survival. The model is an extension of the currently accepted Lundberg-Palmgren Rolling Element Bearing Life Model. Limited rolling contact testing of cylindrical samples with and without traction in the contact was accomplished. At a low coefficient of traction (below 0.1), no statistically significant effect on fatigue life was noted. Scanning electron microscopy studies were performed of all test samples. One rolling test sample was SEM examined periodically during testing to observe initiation and progression of failure. Numerical examples are presented for the calculation of the dynamic capacity of a standard contact ratio and a high contact ratio spur gear mesh. (Author).

Book Predicted Effect of Dynamic Load on Pitting Fatigue Life for Low contact ratio Spur Gears

Download or read book Predicted Effect of Dynamic Load on Pitting Fatigue Life for Low contact ratio Spur Gears written by David G. Lewicki and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How dynamic load affects the surface pitting fatigue life of external spur gears was predicted by using NASA computer program TELSGE. Parametric studies were performed over a range of various gear parameters modeling low-contact-ratio involute spur gears. In general, gear life predictions based on dynamic loads differed significantly from those based on static loads, with the predictions being strongly influenced by the maximum dynamic load during contact. Gear mesh operating speed strongly affected predicted dynamic load and life. Meshes operating at a resonant speed or one-half the resonant speed had significantly shorter lives. Dynamic life factors for gear surface pitting fatigue were developed on the basis of the parametric studies. In general, meshes with higher contact ratios had higher dynamic life factors than meshes with lower contact ratios. A design chart was developed for hand calculations of dynamic life factors. Book Interfacial Mechanics

Download or read book Interfacial Mechanics written by Jane Wang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the characteristics of material contact and lubrication at tribological interfaces is of great importance to engineering researchers and machine designers. Traditionally, contact and lubrication are separately studied due to technical difficulties, although they often coexist in reality and they are actually on the same physical ground. Fast research advancements in recent years have enabled the development and application of unified models and numerical approaches to simulate contact and lubrication, merging their studies into the domain of Interfacial Mechanics. This book provides updated information based on recent research progresses in related areas, which includes new concepts, theories, methods, and results for contact and lubrication problems involving elastic or inelastic materials, homogeneous or inhomogeneous contacting bodies, using stochastic or deterministic models for dealing with rough surfaces. It also contains unified models and numerical methods for mixed lubrication studies, analyses of interfacial frictional and thermal behaviors, as well as theories for studying the effects of multiple fields on interfacial characteristics. The book intends to reflect the recent trends of research by focusing on numerical simulation and problem solving techniques for practical interfaces of engineered surfaces and materials. This book is written primarily for graduate and senior undergraduate students, engineers, and researchers in the fields of tribology, lubrication, surface engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Book Gear Materials Properties and Manufacture

Download or read book Gear Materials Properties and Manufacture written by Joseph R. Davis and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2005 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of the critical technical aspects of gear materials technology are addressed in this new reference work. Gear Materials, Properties, and Manufacture is intended for gear metallurgists and materials specialists, manufacturing engineers, lubrication technologists, and analysts concerned with gear failures who seek a better understanding of gear performance and gear life. This volume complements other gear texts that emphasize the design, geometry, and theory of gears. The coverage begins with an overview of the various types of gears used, important gear terminology, applied stresses and strength requirements associated with gears, and lubrication and wear. This is followed by in-depth treatment of metallic (ferrous and nonferrous alloys) and plastic gear materials. Emphasis is on the properties of carburized steels, the material of choice for high-performance power transmission gearing.

Book Experimental and Computational Methods for Strength Analyses of Gears

Download or read book Experimental and Computational Methods for Strength Analyses of Gears written by Srečko Glodež and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gears are machine elements used in most engineering applications, mainly in the automotive and aerospace industries. When designing gear drives, the available standardised procedures are usually used for that purpose. However, the available computational methods are also often applied to obtain the load capacity of gears considering different fatigue design approaches (i.e. the stress-life approach, the strain-life approach and the fatigue crack growth approach). This book consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the reader to the fundamental magnitudes of gear drives concerning cylindrical gear pairs, bevel gear pairs, and worm gear pairs. The second chapter explains the theoretical background of the load capacity of gears; surface pitting load capacity and tooth root load capacity are described in detail. The third chapter focuses on the strength analyses of metal gears. Chapters four and five describe the strength analyses of sintered and polymer gears, including some typical practical examples.

Book Modeling and Analytical Methods in Tribology

Download or read book Modeling and Analytical Methods in Tribology written by Ilya I. Kudish and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving our understanding of friction, lubrication, and fatigue, Modeling and Analytical Methods in Tribology presents a fresh approach to tribology that links advances in applied mathematics with fundamental problems in tribology related to contact elasticity, fracture mechanics, and fluid film lubrication. The authors incorporate the classical tenets of tribology while providing new mathematical solutions that address various shortcomings in existing theories. From contact interactions to contact fatigue life, the book connects traditionally separate areas of tribology research to create a coherent modeling methodology that encompasses asymptotic and numerical techniques. The authors often demonstrate the efficacy of the models by comparing predictions to experimental data. In most cases, they derive equations from first principles. They also rigorously prove problem formulations and derive certain solution properties. Solutions to problems are presented using simple analytical formulas, graphs, and tables. In addition, the end-of-chapter exercises highlight points important for comprehending the material and mastering the appropriate skills. Unlocking the secrets that govern the physics of lubricated and dry contacts, this book helps tribologists on their quest to reduce friction, minimize wear, and extend the operating life of mechanical equipment. It provides a real-world industrial perspective so that readers can attain a practical understanding of the material.
