Book Attack of the Teenage Brain

Download or read book Attack of the Teenage Brain written by John Medina and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marvel at the neuroscientific reasons why smart teens make dumb decisions! Behold the mind-controlling power of executive function! Thrill to a vision of a better school for the teenage brain! Whether you're a parent interacting with one adolescent or a teacher interacting with many, you know teens can be hard to parent and even harder to teach. The eye-rolling, the moodiness, the wandering attention, the drama. It's not you, it's them. More specifically, it's their brains. In accessible language and with periodic references to Star Trek, motorcycle daredevils, and near-classic movies of the '80s, developmental molecular biologist John Medina, author of the New York Times best-seller Brain Rules, explores the neurological and evolutionary factors that drive teenage behavior and can affect both achievement and engagement. Then he proposes a research-supported counterattack: a bold redesign of educational practices and learning environments to deliberately develop teens' cognitive capacity to manage their emotions, plan, prioritize, and focus. Attack of the Teenage Brain! is an enlightening and entertaining read that will change the way you think about teen behavior and prompt you to consider how else parents, educators, and policymakers might collaborate to help our challenging, sometimes infuriating, often weird, and genuinely wonderful kids become more successful learners, in school and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tour through the groundbreaking science behind the enigmatic, but crucial, brain developments of adolescence and how those translate into teenage behavior The brain creates every feeling, emotion, and desire we experience, and stores every one of our memories. And yet, until very recently, scientists believed our brains were fully developed from childhood on. Now, thanks to imaging technology that enables us to look inside the living human brain at all ages, we know that this isn't so. Professor Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, one of the world's leading researchers into adolescent neurology, explains precisely what is going on in the complex and fascinating brains of teenagers--namely that the brain goes on developing and changing right through adolescence--with profound implications for the adults these young people will become. Drawing from cutting-edge research, including her own, Blakemore shows: How an adolescent brain differs from those of children and adults Why problem-free kids can turn into challenging teens What drives the excessive risk-taking and all-consuming relationships common among teenagers And why many mental illnesses--depression, addiction, schizophrenia--present during these formative years Blakemore's discoveries have transformed our understanding of the teenage mind, with consequences for law, education policy and practice, and, most of all, parents.

Book The Teenage Brain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frances E. Jensen
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2015-01-06
  • ISBN : 0062067869
  • Pages : 303 pages

Download or read book The Teenage Brain written by Frances E. Jensen and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller Renowned neurologist Dr. Frances E. Jensen offers a revolutionary look at the brains of teenagers, dispelling myths and offering practical advice for teens, parents and teachers. Dr. Frances E. Jensen is chair of the department of neurology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. As a mother, teacher, researcher, clinician, and frequent lecturer to parents and teens, she is in a unique position to explain to readers the workings of the teen brain. In The Teenage Brain, Dr. Jensen brings to readers the astonishing findings that previously remained buried in academic journals. The root myth scientists believed for years was that the adolescent brain was essentially an adult one, only with fewer miles on it. Over the last decade, however, the scientific community has learned that the teen years encompass vitally important stages of brain development. Samples of some of the most recent findings include: Teens are better learners than adults because their brain cells more readily "build" memories. But this heightened adaptability can be hijacked by addiction, and the adolescent brain can become addicted more strongly and for a longer duration than the adult brain. Studies show that girls' brains are a full two years more mature than boys' brains in the mid-teens, possibly explaining differences seen in the classroom and in social behavior. Adolescents may not be as resilient to the effects of drugs as we thought. Recent experimental and human studies show that the occasional use of marijuana, for instance, can cause lingering memory problems even days after smoking, and that long-term use of pot impacts later adulthood IQ. Multi-tasking causes divided attention and has been shown to reduce learning ability in the teenage brain. Multi-tasking also has some addictive qualities, which may result in habitual short attention in teenagers. Emotionally stressful situations may impact the adolescent more than it would affect the adult: stress can have permanent effects on mental health and can to lead to higher risk of developing neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression. Dr. Jensen gathers what we’ve discovered about adolescent brain function, wiring, and capacity and explains the science in the contexts of everyday learning and multitasking, stress and memory, sleep, addiction, and decision-making. In this groundbreaking yet accessible book, these findings also yield practical suggestions that will help adults and teenagers negotiate the mysterious world of adolescent development.

Book The Cheshire Teens Story

Download or read book The Cheshire Teens Story written by Ed Kenerson and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sports world coaches us to "practice the basics" over and over until we eventually achieve excellence and ultimate success. Al Baines understood the basics of effective ministry and applied these to a fledgling youth group in a small, rural church of two hundred adults. Within two years of implementing these basic principles, the church's youth program grew to over half the size of its adult congregation. This book will examine these principles and show the results that were obtained. They can bring genuine spiritual impact to any church leadership team looking to answer the question, "How can we build an effective youth program in our church?" The time frame has changed, but the principles remain trustworthy. Ed Kenerson attended Gordon College (B.A. Psychology) and Gordon Conwell Seminary (Masters of Religious Education) and has over 10 years experience in Christian Education and Youth Ministry. At present, he manages his own training and communications business called Steps To Success, delivering multi-media presentations to businesses in areas of career management, customer service, and time management. In addition, he reaches out to teenagers in high schools through Career Coach, USA, a strategic ministry designed to teach young people the principles of both personal and professional success. Ed is married to Kathy with two children and eight grandchildren.

Book Mind Is Flat

  • Author : Nick Chater
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2018-08-07
  • ISBN : 0300240619
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Mind Is Flat written by Nick Chater and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a radical reinterpretation of how the mind works, an eminent behavioral scientist reveals the illusion of mental depth Psychologists and neuroscientists struggle with how best to interpret human motivation and decision making. The assumption is that below a mental “surface” of conscious awareness lies a deep and complex set of inner beliefs, values, and desires that govern our thoughts, ideas, and actions, and that to know this depth is to know ourselves. In this profoundly original book, behavioral scientist Nick Chater contends just the opposite: rather than being the plaything of unconscious currents, the brain generates behaviors in the moment based entirely on our past experiences. Engaging the reader with eye-opening experiments and visual examples, the author first demolishes our intuitive sense of how our mind works, then argues for a positive interpretation of the brain as a ceaseless and creative improviser.

By educating and training our mind, we can control in extraordinary ways: ✓ Our thoughts ✓ Our emotions ✓ Our words ✓ Our actions ✓ Our behavior ✓ Our work ✓ Our life And who takes control of his life, he can achieve a very good life. By working our mind, we will see how we improve: ✓ Our relationship as a couple ✓ Our relationship with our children ✓ Our relationship with our parents ✓ Our relationship with our brothers ✓ Our relationship with our friends ✓ Our relationship with our partners ✓ Our relationship with our bosses ✓ Our relationship with our co-workers ✓ Our relationship with our employees ✓ Our relationship with our neighbors ✓ Our relationship with the world By understanding what the mind is, how it works and training it well, we can build a wonderful life and be an agent of positive change for the world. If we educate the mind, it will be our great ally. If we don't educate the mind, it will be our great enemy. With an educated mind we can choose objectives, directions and organize our present to advance in our search. With an uneducated mind, we dedicate ourselves to digging, suspecting, limiting ourselves, generating stress and suffering. It is possible to live with an educated mind. It does not depend on external factors, but on the work in the knowledge of ourselves."

Book The Grown Up s Guide to Teenage Humans

Download or read book The Grown Up s Guide to Teenage Humans written by Josh Shipp and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nautilus Gold Award Winner: Parenting & Family A practical guide to understanding teens from bestselling author and global youth advocate Josh Shipp. In 2015, Harvard researchers found that every child who does well in the face of adversity has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult. But Josh Shipp didn’t need Harvard to know that. Once an at-risk foster kid, he was headed straight for trouble until he met the man who changed his life: Rodney, the foster parent who refused to quit on Shipp and got him to believe in himself. Now, in The Grown-Up’s Guide to Teenage Humans, Shipp shows all of us how to be that caring adult in a teenager’s life. Stressing the need for compassion, trust, and encouragement, he breaks down the phases of a teenage human from sixth to twelfth grade, examining the changes, goals, and mentality of teenagers at each stage. Shipp offers revelatory stories that take us inside the teen brain, and shares wisdom from top professionals and the most expert grown-ups. He also includes practice scripts that address tough issues, including: FORGIVENESS: What do I do when a teen has been really hurt by someone and it’s not their fault? COMMUNICATION: How do I get a teen to talk to me? They just grunt. TRUST: My teen blew it. My trust is gone. Where do we go from here? BULLYING: Help! A teen (or their friend) is being harassed. DIFFICULT AND AWKWARD CONVERSATIONS: Drugs. Death. Sex. Oh my. Written in Shipp’s playfully authoritative, no-nonsense voice, The Grown-Up’s Guide to Teenage Humans tells his story and unpacks practical strategies that can make a difference. Ultimately, it's not about shortcuts or magic words—as Shipp reminds us, it’s about investing in kids and giving them the love, time, and support they need to thrive. And that means every kid is one caring adult away from being a success story.

Book 3 Big Questions That Change Every Teenager

Download or read book 3 Big Questions That Change Every Teenager written by Kara Powell and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's teenagers are the most anxious, creative, and diverse generation in history--which can make it hard for us to relate. And while every teenager is a walking bundle of questions, three rise above the rest: - Who am I? - Where do I fit? - What difference can I make? Young people struggle to find satisfying and life-giving answers to these questions on their own. They need caring adults willing to lean in with empathy, practice listening, and gently point them in the direction of better answers: they are enough because of Jesus, they belong with God's people, and they are invited into God's greater story. In this book, which is based on new landmark research from the Fuller Youth Institute and combines in-depth interviews with data from 1,200 diverse teenagers, Kara Powell and Brad M. Griffin offer pastors, youth leaders, mentors, and parents practical and proven conversations and connections that help teenagers answer their three biggest questions and reach their full potential.
