Book excerpt: During the post-war years Fortunato Depero was one of the key figures of the second Futurist movement, not only in the field of painting but also in graphics, stage sets, the applied arts and experimental writing. This catalogue of the American exhibition, one of the most thorough and up-to-date monographs of the eclectic Italian Futurist artist, is arranged in four sections: The Avant-garde Period 1914-1917 (Plastic Complexes, We Abstract Futurists, Synthetic Architectural Forms), The Aesthetics of Magic 1917-1927 (The Automaton and the Picto-plastic Drama, The New Fantastic), The Magician's House 1919-1927 (The House of Futurist Art. International Exhibitions, Graphic Design), America, America 1928-1932 and more (Metropolitan Visions, Advertising, America Again). A definitive picture of Depero's long career, raging from the early days, to the important Futurist period of the "Casa del Mago"/The Wizard's House (the studio-laboratory created by the artist at Roverero during the time of his enthusiastic participation in the Futurist movement), until the New York period in the thirties, when he was active in costumes, sets and important drawings on urban-industrial themes.

Book excerpt: Y focusing on the life and work of Fortunato Depero (Fondo, Trento, 1892 – Rovereto, 1960) it will aim to offer a new assessment of what has been termed "the Avant-garde of avant-gardes": Italian Futurism.0This visual and literary movement, which was launched with the Manifesto published by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti on 20 February 1909 in the French newspaper Le Figaro, has found its place in history due to the radical nature of its ideas: abolishing all references to the art of the past (considered to be pure "passatismo"), exalting dynamism, the machine, speed and war, freeing words from grammatical structure and multiplying viewpoints in order to express the dynamic interaction of the material with the surrounding space. 0During its most active years, between 1909 and 1915, Futurism made an innovative and dynamic contribution to European visual art and literature. The outbreak of World War I resulted in a break in its activities with many of the Futurists participating in the combat and the death of Boccioni. Prior to this, in 1913, Fortunato Depero went to Rome where he met Marinetti and visited the exhibition on Boccioni at the Galleria Sprovieri. His encounter there with the work of Boccioni and Balla led to a transformation in his artistic output as he assimilated Boccioni’s visual dynamism and Balla’s sense of tension deriving from the abstraction of forms. In the spring of 1915 Depero joined the Futurist movement.0Exhibition: Fundación Juan March, Madrid, Spain (10.10.2014-18.01.2015).

Book Exhibiting Italian Art in the United States from Futurism to Arte Povera

Download or read book Exhibiting Italian Art in the United States from Futurism to Arte Povera written by Raffaele Bedarida and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how Italian institutions, dealers, critics, and artists constructed a modern national identity for Italy by exporting – literally and figuratively – contemporary art to the United States in key moments between 1929 and 1969. From artist Fortunato Depero opening his Futurist House in New York City to critic Germano Celant launching Arte Povera in the United States, Raffaele Bedarida examines the thick web of individuals and cultural environments beyond the two more canonical movements that shaped this project. By interrogating standard narratives of Italian Fascist propaganda on the one hand and American Cold War imperialism on the other, this book establishes a more nuanced transnational approach. The central thesis is that, beyond the immediate aims of political propaganda and conquering a new market for Italian art, these art exhibitions, publications, and the critical discourse aimed at American audiences all reflected back on their makers: they forced and helped Italians define their own modernity in relation to the world’s new dominant cultural and economic power. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, social history, exhibition history, and Italian studies.

Book Depero new Depero Ediz italiana e inglese

Download or read book Depero new Depero Ediz italiana e inglese written by Nicoletta Boschiero and published by Silvana Editoriale. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word new in the title of this volume represents Fortunato Depero's predisposition to innovation and the continuous transformation of his ideas, but also the influence he was able to offer both to designers of the eighties - above all Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendini - and to New Futurist artists - Abate, Innocente, Lodola, Postal and Plumcake - who wisely mix Futurism, Pop Art and Kitsch.0The Depero effect can also be seen in artists such as Ugo Nespolo and Matteo Thun, who give life to effective Deperian advertising reworkings for the merchandising of the Campari company, as well as in avant-garde comics with designers such as Echaurren, Giacon, Carpinteri, who starting from the eighties have resumed - often ironically - the stylistic features of Depero.0In the 2000s, interest in films and videos grew - often centered on the exemplary life of the artist from Rovereto, which has been reconstructed thanks to the documents kept in the Depero collection - which allow in-depth research work, as in the case of Il sogno di Alberto (2011), a video installation on four screens directed by N! 03, Depero, Rovereto, New York e altre storie (2015) by Nello Correale, and finally New York film vissuto from 2020, conceived by the Istituto Barlumen specifically for the exhibition. 00Exhibition: Mart, Rovereto, Italy (21.10.2021 - 13.02.2022).

Book Italian futurism and the machine

Download or read book Italian futurism and the machine written by Katia Pizzi and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first interdisciplinary exploration of machine culture in Italian futurism after the First World War. The machine was a primary concern for the futuristi. As well as being a material tool in the factory it was a social and political agent, an aesthetic emblem, a metonymy of modernity and international circulation and a living symbol of past crafts and technologies. Exploring literature, the visual and performing arts, photography, music and film, the book uses the lens of European machine culture to elucidate the work of a broad set of artists and practitioners, including Censi, Depero, Marinetti, Munari and Prampolini. The machine emerges here as an archaeology of technology in modernity: the time machine of futurism.

Book Handbook of International Futurism

Download or read book Handbook of International Futurism written by Günter Berghaus and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of International Futurism is the first reference work ever to presents in a comparative fashion all media and countries in which the movement, initiated by F.T. Marinetti in 1909, exercised a particularly noteworthy influence. The handbook offers a synthesis of the state of scholarship regarding the international radiation of Futurism and its influence in some fifteen artistic disciplines and thirty-eight countries. While acknowledging the great achievements of the movement in the visual and literary arts of Italy and Russia, it treats Futurism as an international, multidisciplinary phenomenon that left a lasting mark on the manifold artistic manifestations of the early twentieth-century avant-garde. Hundreds of artists, who in some phase in their career absorbed Futurist ideas and stylistic devices, are presented in the context of their national traditions, their international connections and the media in which they were predominantly active. The handbook acts as a kind of multi-disciplinary, geographical encyclopaedia of Futurism and gives scholars with varying levels of experience a detailed overview of all countries and disciplines in which the movement had a major impact.
