Book The Dependent Personality

Download or read book The Dependent Personality written by Robert F. Bornstein and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1993-04-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume opens with a review of theoretical frameworks that have influenced previous research on dependency. An overview and critique of commonly used assessment techniques contrasts the strengths and weaknesses of objective, projective, behavioral, and interview-based dependency scales. Chapters covering etiology deal with the development of dependency at various stages of the life cycle and allow for comparison of the predictive validities of two important theoretical frameworks: the psychoanalytic and social learning models. Social and interpersonal consequences are considered, with attention to both the person's behavior and its effect on others. The chapter on psychopathological dependency thoroughly covers the enormous amount of research on this subject. Dependent personality disorder is next addressed, as well as the relationship of dependency to risk for physical disorders, followed by a discussion of dependent individuals as psychiatric and medical patients

Book Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness

Download or read book Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness written by Michael Shernoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness describes frontline clinical treatment of HIV-infected chemically dependent persons. It provides a realistic view of what the daily work with this population is like. Specific, in-depth case examples and material give readers a solid understanding of how to work more effectively with chemically dependent clients infected with HIV. By concentrating on practical instead of theoretical aspects of treatment, this groundbreaking book helps practitioners better understand problems in treatment and shows different ways treatment can be given. Authors discuss and describe methods they use such as group work, drug and AIDS education, treatment teams, and the harm reduction model. Chapters address work with specific patient populations with the dual diagnosis of HIV and chemical dependency and describe treatment in a variety of modalities, such as outpatient, residential, or hospital setting. This timely book also includes helpful background material which introduces the complexities of work with this population through the story of one man’s struggle with AIDS and alcohol and drug addiction. Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness also describes medical symptoms and problems of HIV-positive persons which gives non-medical counselors and therapists a preliminary understanding of what their patients may be undergoing physiologically. Other chapters focus on such topics as work with adolescents, short term group work in hospitals, HIV-infected persons on methadone maintenance, effective AIDS prevention with active drug users, and countertransference in professionals working with chemically dependent HIV clients. One of few books to address specifics of counseling and therapy with this difficult population, Counseling Chemically Dependent People with HIV Illness is an extremely valuable and helpful guide for substance abuse counselors, certified alcoholism counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers working in the chemical dependency field.

Book New Member States and the Dependent Elderly

Download or read book New Member States and the Dependent Elderly written by and published by CEPS. This book was released on 2006 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 10 new member states that joined the European Union in May 2004 have increased the population of the EU-15 by 20% and together account for almost 16.4% of the total EU-25 population. The current ageing of the population in the EU-15 has highlighted other challenges besides the well-known problems of financing pension and health care systems. It has also highlighted the risks of a rise in the dependent elderly population and the need to adjust social welfare systems accordingly. Given the emerging risks and problems in the EU-15, one may wonder about the situation in the new member states. This study shows that while the new member states do not yet appear to be facing the problem of elderly dependency on the same scale as the EU-15 countries, in the coming decades it is likely they will have to contend with it to a much greater degree. The study also indicates that provision for dependent elderly care in the 10 countries does not seem to be fully established as yet. That being said, Malta and Slovenia, countries that will have a considerable proportion of the oldest old among their populations in the near future, are distinguishable from the others in that they appear better prepared in terms of dependent elderly care. Although Poland is considered to be far from prosperous as regards economic and social development, in terms of population ageing - particularly provision for the dependent elderly - it also looks better placed than most of the other new member states, which appear to be less generous in assistance provided to the dependent elderly. The three Baltic States are notable in that the share of GDP they allocate to this category is lowest, even though they are expected to have the oldest populations in the years to come.

Book The Car dependent Society

Download or read book The Car dependent Society written by Hans Jeekel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cars are essential in modern Western societies. Some even say that our modern lifestyles would have been impossible without cars. The dependency of Western societies on our cars is a unique situation in history, but does not get much attention; car use is seen as just a normal situation. The population at large knows the risks, knows the disadvantages, experiences the advantages and keeps driving. Using data from Western Europe, this book examines three key themes: frequent car use, car dependence, and the future of passenger car mobility in societies. In conclusion, in modern Western risk societies, more attention needs to be paid to car dependence, its driving forces, its advantages, its problems and challenges for the future.
