Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The President proposed $6.3 billion over 5 years for the Climate Change Technology Initiative, which would fund R&D and the deployment of new technologies to encourage energy efficiency, renewable energy, and technologies to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere, as well as provide tax incentives. The Dept. of Energy (DoE) is expected to implement the largest portion of this initiative through its programs. This report provides (1) information on how DoE plans to alter its climate change R&D spending from FY1998 to FY1999 and (2) observations regarding funding for R&D, based on previous work in this area.

Book U S Climate Change Technology Program Strategic Plan

Download or read book U S Climate Change Technology Program Strategic Plan written by U. S. Climate Program and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today released the Climate Change Technology Program (CCTP) Strategic Plan, which details measures to accelerate the development and reduce the cost of new and advanced technologies that avoid, reduce, or capture and store greenhouse gas emissions. CCTP is the technology component of a comprehensive U.S. strategy introduced by President Bush in 2002 to combat climate change that include measures to slow the growth of greenhouse gas emissions through voluntary, incentive-based, and mandatory partnerships, advance climate change science, spur clean energy technology development and deployment, and promote international collaboration. "This Plan was inspired by the President's vision to harness America's strengths in innovation and technology to transform energy production and use in ways that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the long term," U.S Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman said. "This Strategic Plan is unprecedented in its scope and scale and breaks new ground with its visionary 100-year planning horizon, global perspective, multi-lateral research collaborations, and public private partnerships." The CCTP Strategic Plan organizes roughly $3 billion in federal spending for climate technology research, development, demonstration, and deployment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase economic growth. It provides a long-term planning context, taking into account many uncertainties, and establishes principles for formulating research and development portfolios to identify areas for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and highlights an array of technology strategies and investment criteria. This Plan complements other Administration efforts including short-term measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity, advance climate change science, and promote international cooperation through partnership including the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, Methane to Markets Partnership, and the International Partnership for a Hydrogen Economy. The Plan sets six complementary goals: (1) reducing emissions from energy use and infrastructure; (2) reducing emissions from energy supply; (3) capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide; (4) reducing emissions of other greenhouse gases; (5) measuring and monitoring emissions; and (6) bolstering the contributions of basic science to climate change. The Plan outlines approaches toward attaining these goals, articulates underlying technology development strategies, and identifies a series of next steps toward implementation.

Book Implementing the President s Climate Action Plan

Download or read book Implementing the President s Climate Action Plan written by United States. Congress. Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congress has provided DOE with broad legal authority that can be used to address climate change. DOE will play a crucial role in executing the President's Climate Action Plan. The Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change encourages the Secretary of Energy to consider the 20 recommendations presented in this report as he implements the President's plan. Strengthening energy efficiency standards and programs, accelerating the development and deployment of low-carbon energy technologies, modernizing the electric grid, and fully evaluating the climate change impacts of major energy infrastructure projects would reduce carbon pollution while saving consumers money and creating jobs.

Book U S Climate Change Technology Program Strategic Plan

Download or read book U S Climate Change Technology Program Strategic Plan written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 2002, President George W. Bush reorganized the overarching management structure that coordinates and directs U.S. climate change research and development activities. Under this new structure, climate change science and climate-related technology research programs are integrated to an extent not seen previously. The Climate Change Science Program (CCSP) was established to reduce the uncertainties in climate science and develop science-based resources to support decision makers. The Climate Change Technology Program (CCTP) was formed to coordinate the Federal Government's portfolio of climate-related technology research and development activities, including technology deployment and adoption activities. The Strategic Plan expands on the themes presented in CCTP's Vision and Framework for Strategy and Planning. The technologies outlined in this Plan hydrogen, biorefining, clean coal, carbon sequestration, nuclear fission and fusion, advanced concepts in buildings, industry, transportation and electric energy storage and distribution, and others have the potential to transform our economy in fundamental ways that can address not just climate change, but energy security, air quality, and other pressing needs. The Plan articulates a vision of the role for advanced technologies, defines a supporting mission for the CCTP, establishes guiding principles for Federal R & D agencies to use in formulating R & D portfolios, outlines approaches to attain CCTP's strategic goals, and identifies a series of next steps toward implementation.

  • Author : Chinese Academy of Engineering

Download or read book The Power of Renewables written by Chinese Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-01-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and China are the world's top two energy consumers and, as of 2010, the two largest economies. Consequently, they have a decisive role to play in the world's clean energy future. Both countries are also motivated by related goals, namely diversified energy portfolios, job creation, energy security, and pollution reduction, making renewable energy development an important strategy with wide-ranging implications. Given the size of their energy markets, any substantial progress the two countries make in advancing use of renewable energy will provide global benefits, in terms of enhanced technological understanding, reduced costs through expanded deployment, and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to conventional generation from fossil fuels. Within this context, the U.S. National Academies, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), reviewed renewable energy development and deployment in the two countries, to highlight prospects for collaboration across the research to deployment chain and to suggest strategies which would promote more rapid and economical attainment of renewable energy goals. Main findings and concerning renewable resource assessments, technology development, environmental impacts, market infrastructure, among others, are presented. Specific recommendations have been limited to those judged to be most likely to accelerate the pace of deployment, increase cost-competitiveness, or shape the future market for renewable energy. The recommendations presented here are also pragmatic and achievable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Technical Report on "Climate Change and Energy Supply and Use" has been prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in support of the U.S. National Climate Assessment (NCA). Prepared on an accelerated schedule to fit time requirements for the NCA, it is a summary of the currently existing knowledge base on its topic, nested within a broader framing of issues and questions that need further attention in the longer run. This technical input report is a summary of the currently existing knowledge base on climate change and energy supply and use, nested within a broader framing of the issues and questions that need further attention in the longer run. It builds on two previous assessments of implications of climate change for energy supply and use. The report summarizes current knowledge, especially emerging findings since 2007, about implications of climate change for energy use, implications of climate change for energy production and supply (oil and gas, thermal electricity, renewable energy, integrated perspectives, and indirect impacts on energy systems), followed by discussions of implications for future risk management strategies, research gaps, and moving toward a self-sustained continuing assessment capacity for the longer term.
