Book Department of Defense Space Transportation System Orbiter Avionics Software Integration Study Analysis of Orbiter Systems to Meet MASE Requirements

Download or read book Department of Defense Space Transportation System Orbiter Avionics Software Integration Study Analysis of Orbiter Systems to Meet MASE Requirements written by L. S. Diamant and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the use of the Space Shuttle Orbiter data processing subsystems in satisfying requirements for the integral astronaut participation in selected DoD space shuttle experiments. Key aspect of the study was the analysis, based on system implementation, to determine degrees of data protection from unauthorized use. Typical image processing and enhancing techniques versus display response time for astronaut interactions were assessed. The study concluded that a degree of data protection is achieved with the present orbiter avionics system by isolating one of the five general purpose computers with an out-of-sync procedure. Additional levels of data protection could be achieved only with additional hardware. (Author).

This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the traditional 'waterfall' model of the software project life cycle, the Requirements Phase ends and flows into the Design Phase, which ends and flows into the Development Phase. Unfortunately, the process rarely, if ever, works so smoothly in practice. Instead, software developers often receive new requirements, or modifications to the original requirements, well after the earlier project phases have been completed. In particular, projects with shorter than ideal schedules are highly susceptible to frequent requirements changes, as the software requirements analysis phase is often forced to begin before the overall system requirements and top-level design are complete. This results in later modifications to the software requirements, even though the software design and development phases may be complete. Requirements changes received in the later stages of a software project inevitably lead to modification of existing developed software. Presented here is a series of software design techniques that can greatly reduce the impact of last-minute requirements changes. These techniques were successfully used to add built-in flexibility to two complex software systems in which the requirements were expected to (and did) change frequently. These large, real-time systems were developed at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) to test and control the Lidar In-Space Technology Experiment (LITE) instrument which flew aboard the space shuttle Discovery as the primary payload on the STS-64 mission. Book An Assessment of Space Shuttle Flight Software Development Processes

Download or read book An Assessment of Space Shuttle Flight Software Development Processes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective software is essential to the success and safety of the Space Shuttle, including its crew and its payloads. The on-board software continually monitors and controls critical systems throughout a Space Shuttle flight. At NASA's request, the committee convened to review the agency's flight software development processes and to recommend a number of ways those processes could be improved. This book, the result of the committee's study, evaluates the safety, oversight, and management functions that are implemented currently in the Space Shuttle program to ensure that the software is of the highest quality possible. Numerous recommendations are made regarding safety and management procedures, and a rationale is offered for continuing the Independent Verification and Validation effort that was instituted after the Challenger Accident.

Book Technology and Advanced Development for a Non Toxic Orbital Maneuvering System and Reaction Control System for Orbiter Upgrade

Download or read book Technology and Advanced Development for a Non Toxic Orbital Maneuvering System and Reaction Control System for Orbiter Upgrade written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA intends to pursue technology applications to upgrade the Space Shuttle Orbiter OMS and RCS systems with non-toxic propellants. The primary objectives of an upgraded OMS/RCS are improved safety and reliability, reduced operations and maintenance costs while meeting basic OMS/RCS operational and performance requirements. The OMS/RCS has a high degree of direct interaction with the crew and requires subsystem and components that are compatible with integration into the orbiter vehicle with regard to external mold-line, power and thermal control The non-toxic propulsion technology is also applicable to future Human Exploration and Development of Space (HEDS) missions. The HEDS missions have similar requirements for attitude control and lander descent/ascent propulsion and which will emphasize the use of In-Situ Resource for propellants. When used as a regenerative coolant as in the Shuttle Orbiter OMS combustion chamber, non-toxic fuels such as ethanol are limited in their cooling capacity by the bulk temperature rise permitted to prevent film boiling or possible coking. Typical regeneratively cooled chambers are constructed from highly conductive copper, which maximizes heat transfer, or from low conductivity materials like stainless steel that can also exacerbate cooling problems. For an ethanol cooled application the heat transfer into the fluid must be controlled to reduce the fuel coolant bulk temperature rise. An approach to provide this control is the subject of this report. This report is being issued to document work done by Aerojet on NASA contract NAS 8-98042. Specifically, this project investigates of the use of ethanol, a designated non-toxic fuel, as a coolant for the Space Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System Engine combustion chamber. The project also addresses a cost reducing fabrication technique for construction of such a combustion chamber. The study contained three major sub-tasks: an analytical investigation and trade study which included layout

Book Technology Development Program for Twenty First Century Aerospace Vehicles

Download or read book Technology Development Program for Twenty First Century Aerospace Vehicles written by William T. Suit and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, a presidential directive initiated the National Space Transportation and Support Study which instructed NASA and the DOD to look at the national needs for large system architecture, avionics, and mission requirements to support the design of space transportation systems through the year 2010. The purpose of the joint NASA-DOD program resulting from the directive was to conduct studies to determine the technology development required for the design of the next generation of space transportation systems. These objectives are discussed in greater detail in reference 1. Much of the proposed research is mission motivated, and vehicle operations will be the focal point for this research. In this paper, we will primarily discuss NASA's input to the avionics technology development plan. NATO Furnished. (rh).

Book Implementing the Space Shuttle Data Processing System with the Space Generic Open Avionics Architecture

Download or read book Implementing the Space Shuttle Data Processing System with the Space Generic Open Avionics Architecture written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an overview of the application of the Space Generic Open Avionics Architecture (SGOAA) to the Space Shuttle Data Processing System (DPS) architecture design. This application has been performed to validate the SGOAA, and its potential use in flight critical systems. The paper summarizes key elements of the Space Shuttle avionics architecture, data processing system requirements and software architecture as currently implemented. It then summarizes the SGOAA architecture and describes a tailoring of the SGOAA to the Space Shuttle. The SGOAA consists of a generic system architecture for the entities in spacecraft avionics, a generic processing external and internal hardware architecture, a six class model of interfaces and functional subsystem architectures for data services and operations control capabilities. It has been proposed as an avionics architecture standard with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), through its Strategic Avionics Technology Working Group, and is being considered by the Society of Aeronautic Engineers (SAE) as an SAE Avionics Standard. This architecture was developed for the Flight Data Systems Division of JSC by the Lockheed Engineering and Sciences Company, Houston, Texas. Wray, Richard B. and Stovall, John R.
