Book A Study to Determine the Outcome of Sealants Placed by Dental Hygiene Students in a School based Sealant Program

Download or read book A Study to Determine the Outcome of Sealants Placed by Dental Hygiene Students in a School based Sealant Program written by Masami Takahashi and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sealants placed in school-based programs are appropriate interventions for reducing tooth decay among children. The effectiveness of a sealant depends upon its long-term retention. School-based settings present disadvantages such as; limitations of portable dental equipment, poor lighting, and potential equipment malfunction. These conditions, along with multiple clinicians, may affect the retention of sealants. Forty four (n=44) children at Our Lady of Angels School participated in a school-based sealant program in fall of 2006. Thirty-five children (n=107 occlusal surfaces) met inclusion criteria and were sealed by dental hygiene students. Thirty children (n=90 occlusal surfaces) were available for re-evaluation. Seventy-five sealants were completely retained, resulting in an overall retention rate of eighty-three percent. Retention results were similar among all four permanent first molars (80%-86%). The results from this study indicate that sealants placed in a school-based setting can be successfully retained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Roundtable on Health Literacy focuses on bringing together leaders from the federal government, foundations, health plans, associations, and private companies to address challenges facing health literacy practice and research and to identify approaches to promote health literacy in both the public and private sectors. The roundtable serves to educate the public, press, and policy makers regarding the issues of health literacy, sponsoring workshops to discuss approaches to resolve health literacy challenges. It also builds partnerships to move the field of health literacy forward by translating research findings into practical strategies for implementation. The Roundtable held a workshop March 29, 2012, to explore the field of oral health literacy. The workshop was organized by an independent planning committee in accordance with the procedures of the National Academy of Sciences. The planning group was composed of Sharon Barrett, Benard P. Dreyer, Alice M. Horowitz, Clarence Pearson, and Rima Rudd. The role of the workshop planning committee was limited to planning the workshop. Unlike a consensus committee report, a workshop summary may not contain conclusions and recommendations, except as expressed by and attributed to individual presenters and participants. Therefore, the summary has been prepared by the workshop rapporteur as a factual summary of what occurred at the workshop.

Download or read book Pit and Fissure Sealants written by Katrin Bekes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides wide-ranging information on current clinical and scientific knowledge on the various aspects of fissure sealing. Trends in the epidemiology of caries are first examined, followed by thorough description of the morphology of pits and fissures and types of sealant. The role of sealants in the prevention of caries is discussed. Diagnostic parameters are presented, along with step-by-step descriptions of clinical procedures for fissure sealing. Chapters are also included on alternative techniques of fissure sealing, sealing of carious fissures, and therapeutic fissure sealing. The final chapter in the book focuses on the cost effectiveness of the procedure. Tooth surfaces with pits and fissures are particularly vulnerable to caries development. Sealants were developed to help manage these sites of the tooth and safeguard the surfaces from decay. This book has been written by acknowledged experts in the field.
