Book excerpt: This paper discusses key findings and recommendations of the Financial System Stability Assessment for Norway. Norway’s financial system coped well with the global financial crisis and has further increased buffers to deal with potential shocks, but significant financial imbalances have also built up since then. Stress tests suggest that under severe macroeconomic shocks, banks and life insurers could face important but manageable capital shortfalls. The authorities have taken significant measures to improve the oversight framework, but further strengthening is needed. The regulatory and supervisory framework is generally good, but some weaknesses need to be addressed.

Book excerpt: Rorden Wilkinson explores the factors behind the collapse of World Trade Organisation (WTO) ministerials – as in Seattle in 1999 and Cancun in 2003 – and asks why such events have not significantly disrupted the development of the multilateral trading system. He argues that the political conflicts played out during such meetings, their occasional collapse and the reasons why such events have so far not proven detrimental to the development of the multilateral trading system can be explained by examining the way in which the institution was created and has developed through time. In addition, this new text: explores the development of the multilateral trading system from the creation of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1947 to the WTO’s Hong Kong ministerial in December 2005 examines the way in which the interaction of member states has been structured by the institution’s development assesses the impact of institutional practices and procedures on the heightening of political tensions and explains why WTO ministerials exhibit a propensity to collapse but why the breakdown of a meeting has so far not prevented the institution from moving forward This book will be of interest to scholars and students of international politics, economics and law

Book excerpt: The financial resilience of banks has been strengthened in recent years and banks are benefiting from continuing economic recovery. Broad-based economic recovery is helping to stimulate demand for credit, although credit growth remains slow, and unemployment continues to fall. Housing markets have started to recover since 2013 with prices and transaction volumes picking up. There has been an improvement in the financial position of Dutch banks: cost efficiency has improved and profitability has recovered. The banks' migration to the new Basel III standards is also well under way for capital adequacy and liquidity. Nonetheless, the outlook is challenging with greater competition, a low interest rate environment, and potential pressure on capital buffers from future regulatory changes.
