Book The Question of God in Heidegger s Phenomenology

Download or read book The Question of God in Heidegger s Phenomenology written by George Kovacs and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1990-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several philosophers have developed theological perspectives out of Heidegger's ontology. Yet the question of God in Heidegger's thought itself has never received full elucidation. In this revealing new study, George Kovacs poses the problem of analyzing the idea of God as a process of questioning and thus subjects Heidegger's phenomenological existentialism to a process of exposition Heidegger himself employed.

Book The Possibility of Philosophy

Download or read book The Possibility of Philosophy written by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Possibility of Philosophy presents the notes that Maurice Merleau‐Ponty prepared for three courses he taught at the Collège de France: “The Possibility of Philosophy Today,” given in the spring semester of 1959, and “Cartesian Ontology and Ontology Today” and “Philosophy and Nonphilosophy since Hegel,” both given in the spring semester of 1961. The last two courses remain incomplete due to Merleau-Ponty’s unexpected death on May 3, 1961. Nonetheless, they provide indications of the new ontology that informed The Visible and the Invisible, a posthumously published work that was under way at the same time. These courses offer readers of Merleau‐Ponty’s late thought a wealth of references—to painting, literature, and psychoanalysis, and to the works of Husserl, Heidegger, Descartes, Hegel, and Marx—that fill in some of the missing pieces of The Visible and the Invisible, especially its often terse and sometimes cryptic working notes. We see more clearly how Merleau-Ponty’s attempt to bring forth a new ontology indicates a fundamental revision in what it means to think, an attempt to reimagine the possibility of philosophy.

Book The Subject of Philosophy

Download or read book The Subject of Philosophy written by Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Subject of Philosophy" presents a sustained examination of the relation between literature and philosophy with special emphasis on the problem of the subject and of representation. Spanning the history of philosophy from Plato and Aristotle to Hegel, Nietzsche, Freud, and Heidegger, and addressing such major moments in the history of literature as Greek tragedy and German romanticism, The book repeatedly raises the question whether philosophy's very attempts to distinguish itself from literature are not conditioned and exceeded by a fundamental inextricability of the two. In these readings, Lacoue-Labarthe focuses on such issues as the nature of fiction and of figurative language, the fate of the "work", the status of the author, the question of madness, and the definition of gender. He broaches as well the analysis of mimesis, the most important concept of his later work and one that already gives to his persistent aesthetic preoccupations an ethical and political resonance. Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe is the author of many books, including "Typography: Mimesis, Philosophy, Politics", "Heidegger, Art and Politics", and, with Jean-Luc Nancy, "The Literary Absolute". This book is intended for those in the fields of literary theory, philosophy.

Book Intimations of Mortality

Download or read book Intimations of Mortality written by David Farrell Krell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2006-04-17 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heidegger&’s thinking has an underlying unity, this book argues, and has cogency for seemingly diverse domains of modern culture: philosophy and religion, aesthetics and literary criticism, intellectual history and social theory. &“The theme of mortality&—finite human existence&—pervades Heidegger&’s thought,&” in the author&’s words, &“before, during, and after his magnum opus, Being and Times, published in 1927.&” This theme is manifested in Heidegger&’s work not &“as funereal melodramatics or as despair and destructive nihilism&” but rather &“as a thinking within anxiety.&” & Four major subthemes in Heidegger&’s thinking are explored in the book&’s four parts: the fundamental ontology developed in Being and Time; the &“lighting and clearing&” of Being, understood as &“unconcealment&”; the history of philosophy&—with emphasis on Heraclitus, Hegel, and Nietzsche&—interpreted as the &“destiny&” of Being; and the poetics of Being, explicated as the &“fundamental experience&” of mortality. & Neither an introduction nor a survey, this book is a close reading of a wide range of Heidegger&’s books, lectures, and articles&—including extensive material not yet translated into English&—informed by the author&’s conversations with Heidegger in 1974&–76. Each of the four subthemes is treated critically. The aim of the book is to push its interrogations of Heidegger&’s thought as far as possible, in order to help the reader toward an independent assessment of his work and to encourage novel, radically conceived approaches to traditional philosophical problems.

Book Martin Heidegger

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Mulhall
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-05-15
  • ISBN : 1351919644
  • Pages : 488 pages

Download or read book Martin Heidegger written by Stephen Mulhall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Heidegger's writings are not extensively concerned with the analysis of political concepts or with advocating particular arrangements of political institutions, his basic way of understanding the human relation to the world accords a constitutive significance to its social, cultural and historical dimensions. There is thus a political aspect to his thinking about every philosophical matter to which he turns his attention. This collection of essays is designed to identify, contextualize and critically evaluate the main phases of his intellectual development from that perspective.
