Book excerpt: For long enough have male academics, with their privileged status and far from banal, everyday life, been able to define exclusively the morally good and bad. What is contained in our ethical handbooks on genetic engineering, economy, animal experiments, etc., is mainly the product of this narrow point of view. Feminist ethics can, according to Ina Praetorius, occur at the kitchen table as well as in the lecture room, the nursery, in the bank, or from the pulpit. Fourteen essays introduce in an understandable and often polemic form issues in feminist ethics. These issues are themes such as biotechnology, animal experimentation, life styles outside of the monopoly claims of heterosexual marriage, ecology, etc. Praetorius examines closely 'prominent' ethical outlines such as Hans Jonas' principle of responsibility or Hans Kung's project of a world ethos. The introduction offers a very informative overview of what feminists have brought to the field of ethics up to the present. This is a book for interested readers who do not shrink from anti-mainstream thinking and have developed a healthy mistrust of androcentric ethics.

Halle draws on insights from philosophy and recent developments in cognitive and neuroscience to argue that there is no pure "natural" sight. We always see in a particular way, from a particular vantage point, and through a specific apparatus, and Halle shows how human beings have used cinema to experiment with the apparatus of seeing for over a century. Postmodern literary criticism of Paul's epistles and sociorhetorical criticism of his letters has created a New Perspective approach to Pauline studies. At the same time, feminist criticism of the Pauline corpus has been growing. Unfortunately there has been hardly any interaction and exchange of research results between these different strands of scholarship. The result of this is that in Pauline studies scholars are hardly aware of feminist perspectives. Similarly, feminist interpretations of Paul, not fully conversant with the most recent strands of Pauline research, are often based on traditional images of Paul. Ehrensperger's analysis of feminist commentaries on Paul thus contains a rather negative depiction of theological thinking. However, both strands of research, feminist and those of the New Perspective, provide fresh and illuminating insights that emphasize similar aspects from different perspectives. Ehrensperger advocates a closer interaction between these two schools of Pauline studies. She analyzes Romans 14-15, exploring the results of recent research in both Pauline schools. Pauline studies from the New Perspective emphasize the Jewish context and texture of Paul's thinking. She sets these in dialogue with feminist theology, which focuses on issues of identity, diversity, and relationality. Her study results in a perspective on Paul which views him as a significant dialogue partner in the search for a theology beyond anti-Semitism and misogyny, beyond force and domination. Kathy Ehrensperger studied theology at the Universities of Basel and Berne, and was a pastor for sixteen years in Switzerland. She is currently a Lecturer in New Testament Studies at the University of Wales, Lampeter.

In addition, economists have used the concept in a highly specific and clearly delineated way. Against this background, Expanding the Economic Concept of Exchange sets out to expand the concept of exchange by crossing the boundaries laid down by economists and by examining the function played by deceptions, self-deceptions and illusions. The main motivation for expanding the concept of exchange was the realization that in the prototypical economic model deception is not taken into account. Hence, economists traditionally regard deception as some sort of irrationality, as a flaw in an otherwise perfectly rational process. Authors represented in this volume take a different approach examining deception as a constituent quality of exchange. This is shown by the contributions drawing on recent developments in economic theory, by those with an anthropological orientation, as well as by a contribution referring specifically to Adam Smith. An interrogation into deception is long overdue in economics. This volume prepares the ground for and makes the first contributions to explicitly acknowledging deceptions, self-deceptions and illusions as fundamental dimensions allowing us as economists to further research and develop the concept of change. A particular and perhaps unexpected focus of this volume lies on anthropology, because economics can clearly benefit from integrating selected results on deception from outside its expanding domain. It is primarily targeted at economists interested in institutional aspects of exchanges and social theory. In addition, the topic will find interested readers from anthropology, cultural studies, science studies, philosophy.
