Download or read book Spirit and Trauma written by Shelly Rambo and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rambo draws on contemporary studies in trauma to rethink a central claim of the Christian faith: that new life arises from death. Reexamining the narrative of the death and resurrection of Jesus from the middle day-liturgically named as Holy Saturday-she seeks a theology that addresses the experience of living in the aftermath of trauma. Through a reinterpretation of "remaining" in the Johannine Gospel, she proposes a new theology of the Spirit that challenges traditional conceptions of redemption. Offered, in its place, is a vision of the Spirit's witness from within the depths of human suffering to the persistence of divine love.
Download or read book Denial written by Richard S. Tedlow and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An astute diagnosis of one of the biggest problems in business Denial is the unconscious determination that a certain reality is too terrible to contemplate, so therefore it cannot be true. We see it everywhere, from the alcoholic who swears he's just a social drinker to the president who declares "mission accomplished" when it isn't. In the business world, countless companies get stuck in denial while their challenges escalate into crises. Harvard Business School professor Richard S. Tedlow tackles two essential questions: Why do sane, smart leaders often refuse to accept the facts that threaten their companies and careers? And how do we find the courage to resist denial when facing new trends, changing markets, and tough new competitors? Tedlow looks at numerous examples of organizations crippled by denial, including Ford in the era of the Model T and Coca-Cola with its abortive attempt to change its formula. He also explores other companies, such as Intel, Johnson & Johnson, and DuPont, that avoided catastrophe by dealing with harsh realities head-on. Tedlow identifies the leadership skills that are essential to spotting the early signs of denial and taking the actions required to overcome it.

Download or read book Not What I Expected written by Rita Eichenstein PhD and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for a Books for a Better Life Award A pediatric neuropsychologist presents strategies to help parents of special-needs children navigate the emotional challenges they face. As diagnosis rates continue to rise for autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other developmental differences, parents face a maze of medical, psychological, and educational choices – and a great deal of emotional stress. Many books address children’s learning or behavior problems and advise parents what they can do to help their kids, but until Not What I Expected: Help and Hope for Parents of Atypical Children there were no books that explain what the parents are going through - and how they can cope with their own emotional upheaval – for their own sake, and for the wellbeing of the whole family. With compassion, clarity, and an emphasis on practical solutions, Dr. Rita Eichenstein's Not What I Expected: Help and Hope for Parents of Atypical Children walks readers through the five stages of acceptance (similar to the stages of grief, but modified for parents of special-needs kids). Using vivid anecdotes and suggestions, she helps readers understand their own emotional experience, nurture themselves in addition to their kids, identify and address relationship wounds including tension in a marriage and struggles with children (special-needs and neurotypical), and embrace their child with acceptance, compassion and joy.
Download or read book Be Not Weary in Well Doing written by Sarah Bell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I often cry when I read parts of my book. Sometimes it was so difficult and I loved the kids so much. This is far from a How To book. I had no qualifications in child raising. I just wanted single parents to know that they are not alone, and to offer lots of encouragement and love. Raising well loved, healthy children is a great challenge for even two parents who are strong and love each other. Raising children as a single parent can be an overwhelming task. I felt compelled to write this book to tell you that you can do it. I made many mistakes, but somewhere, somehow something worked, and I have two wonderful kids who make me proud to be their mother. We had very little money, but we had so much love. Together we made it happen. We grew together, we worked together, we snuggled and read for hours together. Raising kids is like planting a garden. We sow the seeds and we water with lots of love. One day we reap what we have sown and we are blessed to see the wonderful adults our children have become. I wrote this book to encourage you to be not weary in well doing. Do not despair. Love your children and create a loving environment. Do not hesitate to put your dreams aside temporarily. Your time will come and it will be special because your own child may be your best support and encouragement.

Download or read book Wonderful Things written by Antony Eastmond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The essays collected in this book were delivered at the XLII Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, held in London [at King's College and at the Courtauld Institute of Art] in 2009 to accompany the exhibition Byzantium 330-1453, at the Royal Academy [held October 25, 2008-March 22, 2009; a collaboration between the Royal Academy of Arts and the Benaki Museum in Athens]. The exhibition was one of the most ambitious and complex exhibitions ever mounted at the Royal Academy, as well as one of the most popular, and the overall aim of the book is to reflect on the exhibition of Byzantine art, both as an academic and popular exercise, and through the choice and discussion of individual objects. Exhibitions present a very different picture of Byzantium and its culture from works of history. The choices of object for display, their arrangement, and the underlying aims of exhibition curators and designers mean that every exhibition presents a different picture of Byzantium. Particular emphases can be placed, whether on everyday life or high court culture; Constantinople or the provinces; or claims of continuity or change over the Byzantine millennium. The essays explore aspects of the image of Byzantium that results from these choices. Given the enormous popularity of exhibitions of Byzantine objects (continued after the completion of this volume by exhibitions in Paris, Bonn and Istanbul), art has become one of the most popular and accessible means of popularizing Byzantium to a wide public audience. Hitherto there has been no general consideration of either the historiography of Byzantine exhibitions or the ways in which they have been set up to present different aspects of Byzantine culture to an academic and general public.
Download or read book Living Your Life While Trusting God with Theirs written by Mary Lynn Ludwig and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you have a teenager or adult child whose difficulties seem to be preventing you from living your life? We are not responsible when they choose the wrong path. We are not responsible to carry them if they take drugs or commit crimes. Even when they have a disease such as mental illness, we cannot carry this load for them. Do you feel guilty as if you can’t do enough to help? Do you question what you didn’t do right or what you did wrong? Are you compelled to somehow make this right? You can be freed from this false belief and start living your life. God does not hold you responsible. Galatians 6:5 says, for each one should carry his own load. Taking on others’ responsibilities is not being a good person; it is enabling the person and preventing them from growing as a person. It is important to know what you are responsible for and what you are not. My son Bradley had paranoid schizophrenia. It was serious and I had to learn new ways to cope and help him. Much of what I needed to learn was to give it to God and then find people to help me. After ten years of Brad in several apartments, group homes and the mental health complex, he passed – my son died due to his medication that ruined his heart. I stand only by the grace of God. In this book, I impart to you what has helped me.
Download or read book Seven Come Eleven written by Charles Deemer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of his stories and plays, Charles Deemer writes of characters typically struggling with changing values in an uncertain world: Todd in The Half-Life Conspiracy, a playwright who comes to the premiere of his one-act play only to discover that it is being directed by his ex-wife, who left him for another woman (the very subject of his bitter one-act play). Thomas in Famililly, who braces to tell his traditional, dying father that he will be raising his son not with his wife but with his male soul mate. Lester in The Man Who Shot Elvis, who many years after the fact is still dealing with a sense of loss from when black rhythm-n-blues turned into white rock-n-roll. Included is this anthology: Famillily which won the 1997 Crossing Borders international new play competition; The Idaho Jacket which was selected as a Roll of Honor story in Best American Short Stories 1974; and Christmas at the Juniper Tavern, an ACE award winner for its presentation on public television and called "an Oregon classic" by Northwest Magazine. Praise for the writing of Charles Deemer: "One of Oregon's most precious natural resources." —Jonathan Nicholas, The Oregonian "Oregon's most important playwright." —Paul Pinterich, Northwest "[Deemer] asks questions about the nature of people's lives, their relationships and their values when something out there forces change." —Kathleen L. Reyes, Stepping Out Northwest
