Or that the way you pronounce a Sanskrit word can change your destiny, turning you into a buffalo instead of a queen? Demons and Demonesses of Hindu Mythology takes you millions of years back in time when beings as tall as mountains walked the ground, their every stride causing earthquakes and tsunamis; when they stayed in their mother's wombs for thousands of years before being born; when they transformed into lions or buffaloes or elephants in the blink of an eye and when encountering beings with five heads, three legs, twenty arms or indeed torsos without heads was not an exception, but the norm. Plunge into the Garbhodaka Ocean where it all started and immerse yourself in the stories of some of the most exotic, magical and powerful asuras and rakshasas in Hindu mythology. This book contains stories of some of the most intriguing asuras and rakshasas of Hindu mythology-from Mahishasura and the infamous ten-headed Ravana, to lesser-known demons such as Jalandhara, the five-headed Mura and the headless Kabandha. The book serves as a great read for children and young adults with a curious mind to know about the intriguing myths and legends connected with demons and demonesses. Each chapter is bursting with stories, facts and trivia that provide insight into various asura and rakshasa stories. It contains both known and unknown myths and legends of Indian mythology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most ancient deities of South Asia, the yaksha straddle the boundaries between popular and textual traditions in both Hinduism and Buddhism and both benevolent and malevolent facets. As a figure of material plenty, the yaksis epitomized as Kubera, god of wealth and king of the yaks In demonic guise, the yaksis related to a large family of demonic and quasi-demonic beings, such as nagas, gandharvas, raks, and the man-eating pisaacas. Translating and interpreting texts and passages from the Vedic literature, the Hindu epics, the Puranas, Kālidāsa's Meghadūta, and the Buddhist Jātaka Tales, Sutherland traces the development and transformation of the elusive yaksfrom an early identification with the impersonal absolute itself to a progressively more demonic and diminished terrestrial characterization. Her investigation is set within the framework of a larger inquiry into the nature of evil, misfortune, and causation in Indian myth and religion.

Book The Righteous Demon

Download or read book The Righteous Demon written by Clifford Hospital and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bali is a central and intriguing figure in Hindu mythology. Designated as a demon, he nevertheless is traditionally described as being virtuous, an ideal devotee and a perfect king. Clifford Hospital resolves this paradox by sorting out variants of the Bali myth in some twenty-six texts which range from the Mahabharata to sections of Robert Southey's poem The Curse of Kehama. In the process he devises a method which will enable scholars to understand the literary genre known as Puranas. The author organizes the myths about Bali into coherent groups based on chronology and thematic similarities. These groups are then arranged into more or less chronological order so that various phases of the central myth -- Bali's encounter with the Dwarf avatar of Visnu -- become evident. Each of these phases reveals shifts in the characterization of Bali. In the earliest stages of development, Bali is a great Asura, an enemy of the gods and therefore of good order. His loss of his kingdom to Visnu, however, becomes the basis of the portrayal of him in the late wisdom. The combination of this wisdom and his reputation as a great sacrificer gives rise to a tradition about Bali as virtuous, and the conditions of his kingdom as good. The interpretation of the Bali myth as showing the hierarchy of dharma, bhakti, and prosperity is challenging and brings a new perception of the moral values of classical Hinduism. Hospital's translation and analysis of the many different versions of the myth makes a significant contribution to the study of Hindu mythology.

Narayan has produced his own versions of tales taken from the Ramayana and the Mahabarata. Carefully selecting those stories which include the strongest characters, and omitting the theological or social commentary that would have drawn out the telling, Narayan informs these fascinating myths with his urbane humor and graceful style. "Mr. Narayan gives vitality and an original viewpoint to the most ancient of legends, lacing them with his own blend of satire, pertinent explanation and thoughtful commentary."—Santha Rama Rau, New York Times "Narayan's narrative style is swift, firm, graceful, and lucid . . . thoroughly knowledgeable, skillful, entertaining. One could hardly hope for more."—Rosanne Klass, Times Literary Supplement

This book was released on 2013-07-02 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is the opium of the people, said Karl Marx many centuries ago. For more than a billion people living in India and abroad, Hinduism is the religion and a way of life. In this multi-award winning book, Swami Achuthananda cracks open the opium poppy pods, analyzes the causes for euphoria, and comes away with a deeper understanding of the people and their religion. *** Winner 2014 Next Generation Indie Book Awards (Religious Non-fiction) *** This is a comprehensive book on Hinduism. It tells you why Hindus do the things they do - and don't. Written in a casual style, the book guides you through the fundamentals of the religion. It then goes further and debunks a number of long-standing myths, some of them coming from the academia (of all places). While most books shy away from contentious issues, this book plunges headlong by taking on controversies, like the Aryan Invasion Theory, idol worship, RISA scholarship and many more. In fact one-third of the book is just on controversies that you rarely find in any other literature. Other Awards: *** Finalist - 2014 Pacific Book Awards (Religion) *** *** Bronze - 2014 IPPY Award - (Religion) ***
