This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I am the spirit of such a woman who lived with Walker…” 21 December 1630. Midnight. An old miller prepares to finish his work in a corn mill in the hamlet of Lumley, in the County of Durham. Suddenly he hears movement on the floor below him, and as he takes a flaming candle and descends the stairs, he is shocked to discover “… a woman standing upon the midst of the floor with her hair about her head hanging down and all bloody, with five large wounds on her head...” This was the scene for Northern England’s most singular and legendary Christmas ghost story. Then another tale, set in the 19th Century, was told in the press of a mysterious haunting that was occurring in the old mill house at Willington Quay, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The two narratives, seemingly dissimilar to each other, had captured the imagination of many historians and ghost hunters for years, and still do to this very day. Now it is time that the two are threaded together, in one of the most true and horrifying experience of a ghostly encounter, related through the miller and the apparition of the murdered woman, like never before…

A sad cruel murther comitted by a boy about eighteen or nineteen years of age, nere Ferryhill, nere Durham, being Thursday, at night….” Over 300 years ago, Ferryhill, an obscure town in the south of County Durham, played host to one of the most horrid and tragic murders in the county’s history. A farm servant murdered the three children of his master in cold blood with an axe. It was described in a London print as the “most horrid and barbarous murder that ever was heard of in the North or elsewhere”. There was no motive for the crime, and nothing in the murderer’s character to suggest that such an event could take place, and yet in his later confession, the perpetrator said that he acted only on the “suggestion of the enemy” – The Devil. For the first time since the murders, all of the evidence leading up to, at the time of, and after the event is collected together as one of the most intriguing investigations into this sad and macabre event, and lays bare some interesting information that have never been known to the public before. Did the Devil come to Ferryhill? Read on, if you dare…

Book Hearing Voices Demonic and Divine

Download or read book Hearing Voices Demonic and Divine written by Christopher C. H. Cook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781472453983, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivative 4.0 license. Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.

Download or read book Demons written by Virginia Berridge and published by Oxford University Press (UK). This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Binge drinking, particularly in young women, has become big news. Debates about the regulation and classification of cannabis are frequently voiced. Cigarette smoking is banned in public places, and emotive public health campaigns seek to reduce its use still further. Yet there are many sides to each of these arguments, and if we look back over the last 150 years, we see massive variety in the ways societies and states have related to drugs, drink, and tobacco. Virginia Berridge offers a much-needed long view, which helps illuminate our current concerns, and shows how three separate stories overlap and inter-connect. She takes us to the socially-acceptable opium dens of Dickens's London; to the absinthe craze of fin-de-siecle Paris. She asks whether prohibition in America proved to be helpful or harmful. She looks at how tobacco was promoted as a medicinal benefit. She considers the medical use of cannabis, LSD, and other drugs. And through all this, she traces the changes in scientific and medical knowledge. This is a complex story of whether, and how, the state should intervene. How do we balance the interests of personal freedom, public well-being, healthcare, and the economy? Is substance abuse a social issue, or a medical one? As governments, health services, and the World Health Organisation grapple with these issues, the wisdom and experience of history can help map the way forward.

Book Tales from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Locker Room

Download or read book Tales from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Locker Room written by Dan Collins and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the gold-standard currency of tradition and success, few college basketball programs are richer in history than Wake Forest University’s. This reissue of Tales from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Locker Room, first published in 2004, traces that vibrant history from the birth of the league to the growing successes of the team today. An original member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Demon Deacons have provided the acclaimed league with much of its color and character—not to mention many of its colorful characters. Author Dan Collins provides stories about legendary players like Muggsy Bogues, the 5’3” guard who defied the description of basketball as a big man’s game, and the glory days of Tim Duncan, the onetime aspiring Olympic swimmer who grew up to become a five-time NBA champion and one of the greatest players in the game. The book looks at great coaches like Richard Crozier, the director of the university gymnasium who introduced basketball to Wake Forest; coach Murray Greason, whose love for the game of basketball was second only to his love for his beagle hounds; and coach Bones McKinney, the hyperactive Baptist minister whose dual, and at times dueling, religions were based on the Bible and basketball. Tales from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Locker Room chronicles how Wake Forest basketball survived the university’s relocation from the quaint town of Wake Forest to the city of Winston-Salem, and how the university has thrived with the support of its devoted fans. Book Say No to the Devil

Download or read book Say No to the Devil written by Ian Zack and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite almost universal renown among his contemporaries, Davis lives today not so much in his own work but through covers of his songs by Dylan, Jackson Browne, and many others, as well as in the untold number of students whose lives he influenced--many of whom continue to teach his techniques today. The first biography of Davis, Say No to the Devil restores the Rev's remarkable story. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with many of Davis's former students and others who knew him well, music journalist Ian Zack takes readers through Davis's difficult beginning as the blind son of sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South to his decision to become an ordained Baptist minister and his move to New York in the early 1940s, where he scraped out a living singing and preaching on street corners and in storefront churches in Harlem. There, he gained entry into a circle of musicians that included, among many others, Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Dave Van Ronk.
