Book excerpt: A group of traders huddles around a pile of dried shark fins on a gleaming white floor in Hong Kong. A Papua New Guinean elder shoves off in his hand-carved canoe, ready to summon a shark with ancient magic. A scientist finds a rare shark in Indonesia and forges a deal with villagers so it and other species can survive. In this eye-opening adventure that spans the globe, Juliet Eilperin investigates the fascinating ways different individuals and cultures relate to the ocean’s top predator. Along the way, she reminds us why, after millions of years, sharks remain among nature’s most awe-inspiring creatures. From Belize to South Africa, from Shanghai to Bimini, we see that sharks are still the object of an obsession that may eventually lead to their extinction. This is why movie stars and professional athletes go shark hunting in Miami and why shark’s fin soup remains a coveted status symbol in China. Yet we also see glimpses of how people and sharks can exist alongside one another: surfers tolerating their presence off Cape Town and ecotourists swimming with sharks that locals in the Yucatán no longer have to hunt. With a reporter’s instinct for a good story and a scientist’s curiosity, Eilperin offers us an up-close understanding of these extraordinary, mysterious creatures in the most entertaining and illuminating shark encounter you’re likely to find outside a steel cage.

Book excerpt: A gritty, fast-talking mercenary teams up with the last of the Demon Enforcers to defeat her own family...a cabal of one-percenter psychics threatening to take over the world. As the castoff, unmagical daughter of one of the most powerful psychic families on earth, I learned a long time ago to make my own path, becoming a discreet and brutally effective operative-for-hire for the Shadow Court. Little do those elitist assholes know, I’m this close to taking them out for good. Then I get tangled up with Raum of the Syx, who also has the Shadow Court in his sights. He’s not like any knuckle-dragging, goop-drooling demon I’ve ever met. He’s got the voice of an angel, the body of a Greek god, and a mystical voodoo eye trick that mesmerizes everyone who looks at him. He also thinks I shouldn’t shoot quite so many people. I mean, fair. I don’t trust Raum, and I can’t—especially since, despite our synced-up missions, he’s also destined to kill me. Good thing I definitely won’t be falling for him…much. Your heart will only destroy you when you face a Demon Beloved. Demon Beloved is book 6 of 6, and concludes the Demon Enforcers paranormal romance series. Set in the same world as Immortal Vegas and Wilde Justice, it's perfect for fans of urban fantasy, high-adventure supernatural suspense, slow-burn romance, and wise-cracking humor.

Book The Jewel in the Wound

  • ISBN : 163051103X
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book The Jewel in the Wound written by Rose-Emily Rothenberg and published by Chiron Publications. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the compelling story of how the author's disfiguring scars guided her search for a connection with her mother, who died at her birth and, ultimately, led to her own psychological development. In this process, the scars became the sacred jewels that illuminated the pathway of self-understanding. Movingly told from a Jungian point of view and in the intimate context of analysis, it is not only the autobiography of a person with a lifelong dedication to understanding the psyche, but also a portrayal of the unconscious as it reveals itself throughout the course of that person's life. As a journey of the soul, the book includes dreams, art work and active imagination-all ways of accessing the archetypal dimension underlying body symptoms. Ms. Rothenberg explains, through focused work, how body symptoms and physical illness can help us to discover our personal myth. In her case, the journey led her to Africa and a study of the art of scarification, during which she interviewed shamans who helped her unveil the symbolic and spiritual meaning behind her own physical and psychological scars. Rothenberg explores wounding in a way that opens us to healing. It is the tale of a life lived consciously and with great integrity. She includes a rich variety of art work, images of cultural artifacts, and pictures from her visits with shamans.

Book The Devil Delivered and Other Tales

Download or read book The Devil Delivered and Other Tales written by Steven Erikson and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Erikson has carved a name for himself among the pantheon of great fantasy writers. But his masterful storytelling and prose style go beyond the awe-inspiring Malazan world. In The Devil Delivered and Other Tales, Erikson tells three different, but captivating stories: "The Devil Delivered" tells a story set within the near future, where the land owned by the great Lakota Nation blisters beneath an ozone hole the size of the Great Plains. As the natural world falls victim to its wrath, and scientists scramble to understand it, a lone anthropologist wanders the deadlands, recording observations that threaten to bring the entire world to its knees. "Revolvo" takes place in an alternate Earth where evolution took an interesting turn and the arts scene is ruled by technocrats who thrive in a secret, nepotistic society of granting agencies, bursaries, and peer-review boards, all designed to permit self-proclaimed artists to survive without an audience. "Fishin' with Grandma Matchie" is told in the voice a nine-year-old boy, writing the story of his summer vacation. What starts as a typical recount of a trip to see Grandma quickly becomes a stunning fantastical journey into imagination and perception in the wild world that Grandma Matchie inhabits. Book Moche Fineline Painting From San Jose De Moro

Download or read book Moche Fineline Painting From San Jose De Moro written by Christopher B. Donnan and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moche civilization flourished on the north coast of Peru from AD 200 to 800. Although the Moche had no writing system, they left a vivid artistic record of their beliefs and activities on intricately painted ceramic vessels, several thousand of which are scattered in museums and private collections throughout the world today. Unfortunately, nearly all were looted by grave robbers so their origin and context are unknown. In recent years, however, through a combination of archaeological excavation and stylistic analysis, it has been possible to identify more than 250 painted vessels from the site of San Jose de Moro. To date, this is the largest sample of Moche art from a single place and time. Thus it provides a unique opportunity to identify a distinct sub-style of Moche ceramics, and to assess its range of artistic and technological variation. Moreover, within the sample it is possible to identify multiple paintings by 18 different artists, thus elucidating the range of subject matter that an artist would paint, as well as the variation in the way he would portray the same scene. By discussing and illustrating more than 200 painted vessels from San Jose de Moro, this volume provides insights about a community of ancient Peruvian potters who shared a distinctive painting style and left a fascinating record of their achievement.

Book excerpt: Things that go bump in the night, disembodied voices, footsteps in an empty stairwell, an icy hand on your shoulder…let your imagination run wild as you read about Maine's most extraordinary apparitions, sinister spooks, and bizarre beasts. You may know of Davy Jones' curse to sailors or Big Squaw Mountain's Eternal Flame, but perhaps you haven't heard about: the phantom pirate ship, which haunts the coast's waters, the destroyed vessel on the sea floor below; Robert Cartier's bewitched axe, which beheaded its owner and floats aimlessly throughout the Maine woods; and flying canoes, used in a deal with the devil by lonely loggers, who quickly regretted their agreement.
